Tesla’s Lead Engineer Confirms Cybertruck is the Most American Made Truck, Says – “I Can’t Think of a Single Cybertruck Part Not Made in the US”

Tesla’s Head of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy has confirmed that the Cybertruck is the most American-made truck in the market. Lars added that he “can’t think of a single Cybertruck part that’s not made in the US.”

Big trucks are as American as apple pie. Nothing screams US manufacturing more than a giant gas-guzzling pickup truck. That’s at least what the perception is amongst the general public, however, the truth is far from that.

Most pickup trucks built by US companies, even the ones assembled in the US, get most of their parts from either across the border from Mexico or from someplace as far as China.

In the list of the most American-made vehicles, the first pickup truck built by an American company doesn’t show up until the 27th spot. In reality, most pickup trucks from Ford, GM, and Chrysler, thanks to globalization are less American than other brands from Japan and Germany such as Honda, Acura, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

This is disappointing for American manufacturing, however, there is one US company that stands alone by making the vehicles it sells in the US in the US.

And that is Tesla. Tesla has the top 4 spots for the most American-made vehicle in 2023. In the lead is the Tesla Model Y as the most American-made vehicle, followed by the Tesla Model 3, Model X, & Model S as second, third, and fourth most American-made vehicles, respectively.

This is wonderful for the weakening manufacturing base in the US, however, Tesla appears to just be starting in the company’s US manufacturing expansion.

Jay Leno, who is an avowed car enthusiast and American manufacturing supporter, recently talked to Tesla’s Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen, and Tesla’s Head of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy.

In his conversations with the Tesla executives, Leno revealed several new information about the Cybertruck including how to turn the truck into a boat (which Elon Musk later confirmed and added more detail), how to drift in reverse, how to easily bolt on a skid plate to the Cybertruck, and so on.

Jay’s Cybertruck review was certainly exciting and in his video, in addition to the truck’s features, the comedian/car enthusiast also asked an important question about the Cybertruck’s manufacturing.

Thinking out loud Leno said “For some reason, people don't think of Tesla as an American company these [Cybertrucks] are all built in America, built in Texas. The Cybertruck probably has the highest American content right?”

In response, Tesla’s lead engineer, Lars Moravy confirmed that the Cybertruck will indeed be the most American-made truck saying “Yeah [the Cybertruck has the highest American content] Model Y is number one, Model 3 is number two, there's some Honda in there and then there's Model S and X at number four and Five. I assume the Cybertruck will be top five next year as well. I can't think of one Cybertruck part that's really not made here.”

Given Tesla’s track record of trying to grow manufacturing in the US, the fact that the Cybertruck is the most American-made truck might not be too surprising, however, it’s still nice to get a confirmation from the Cybertruck’s lead engineer.

Currently, we’re still a few months out until the official American-made rankings for 2024 are released, however, we’ll be sure to keep you updated once the Cybertruck officially gets its ranking.
