A Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says Tesla is Treating the Wrap & Magnets He Put Over His Cybertruck as “Physical Damage” – Adds, “Tesla is Deducting My Trade-in Value Because of It”

A Cybertruck owner claims he’s attempting to trade in his truck, but Tesla is labeling the wrap and stickers he added as “physical damage.” He asks if other Cybertruck owners have experienced similar issues when trading in their trucks.

Ace, a Cybertruck owner from Arizona, says he’s looking to trade in his Cybertruck to buy another one.

The main reason he’s doing this is because of Tesla’s latest 0% APR promotion. Ace wants to trade in his current Cybertruck, which has a higher interest rate, for another Cybertruck with a 0% interest rate and free lifetime supercharging access.

Ace is happy with this decision; however, what surprised him was when he tried to trade in his Cybertruck to Tesla, the EV maker deducted his trade-in value, saying the truck has “physical damage.”

Given that he hasn’t been in any accident and Tesla only calculated the trade-in offer based on the VIN and pictures he provided, Ace is convinced that the “physical damage” Tesla is referring to is related to the wrap and magnetic stickers he has put on his truck.

Confused by this decision, Ace went on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum to discuss his situation.

Ace writes…

“How much did Tesla give you for your Foundation Series Cybertruck AWD? If you don’t mind sharing, what was your trade-in value? Was any physical damage deducted? What was your mileage?

My truck has just over 9,000 miles, and Tesla offered me $66,500, saying they found “physical damage” in my photos.

I’m guessing this refers to the wrap? Just trying to understand how much of an impact that has.”

Below his post, Ace shared a picture of his Cybertruck wrapped in blue and with multiple magnetic stickers attached to the stainless steel vehicle.

Looking at the comments, the first thing fellow Cybertruck owners wanted to know was why Ace is selling his truck.

In response, Ace writes…

“I’m trying to schedule my Cybertruck AWD with free lifetime supercharger access pickup before Monday so I can still get the 0% APR.

The deal is mostly done (insurance binder, etc.).

I'll give up my aftermarket modifications for that, and I'll redo them. It sucks, I love my wrap, Xpel armor, and fiber optic starlights.

But I will love free supercharger access more.

Everything else is transferable. I’m going to dismantle the blue truck today—S92 mirror, light bar, side steps, wheel caps, bed contents, molle panels, Cybertruck hardware, etc.

They just sent me my trade offer, and it said they identified “physical damage” in my pictures, which probably means my wrap and light bar.

The offer was $66,500. What do we think? Try CarMax or just accept that?

There is literally nobody to complain to at Tesla about this. Nobody I’ve been able to reach on the phone, at least.”

Besides questioning why Ace was selling his truck, another concern fellow Cybertruck owners brought up was that Tesla is subtracting his trade-in value and classifying a wrap and magnetic stickers as “physical damage.”

A fellow Cybertruck owner, Koolio from Massachusetts, writes…

“Regarding the 'physical damage,' after seeing your pics above, my guess is Tesla is lowering the trade-in value because of the stickers on the rear passenger door and the graphic on the hood.

I’m also guessing they are considering the labor costs associated with removing them. So, I wonder if you can remove most of it (not the wrap, obviously, but it’s possible), they might bring the trade-in price back to the original offer.”

A second Cybertruck owner, Mark from Pennsylvania, agreed and shared that when he traded in his Model Y to buy a Cybertruck, Tesla offered him a lower trade-in value because of aftermarket add-ons he had installed on the all-electric crossover.

Mark writes…

“The aftermarket accessories definitely make a difference when trading in a Tesla. I traded in my 2020 Model Y Long Range with 31,000 miles as part of my Cybertruck purchase.

The automatic trade estimator quoted me $20,500. When I sent them photos of me swiveling the screen and showing cosmetic issues, I received an offer of $19400.

They told me this was because of all the extra stuff. I asked what the offer would be if I removed all the aftermarket items to see if it was worth the effort.

They said it would increase to $21500. For $2100, I removed all the custom items, and they kept their word. I can't say what numbers they would give you, but aftermarket upgrades definitely matter to them. Good luck, and congrats on the new truck.”

Overall, looking at the comments, Cybertruck owners appear to be okay with Tesla treating a wrap and magnetic stickers as physical damage.

Why are Tesla owners always asked why they are selling a newer one? Doesn’t happen with most other brands. But then owner lies about selling. You would never sell at a 60K lose to save 30K in finance charges. Just be honest and say you can’t afford it or you hate Elon.

You need to do your research before modifying your vehicle. There are very few vehicles that you can modify, in any way, and it actually be worth more upon trade in. Think sports cars with modifications that make the car faster. As you know, simply driving off the lost loses value. Anything as close to factory specs as possible is what they like because they can apply additional warranties to it and help the next owner. Although I am not a fan of Tesla, most people's complaints are due to lack of knowledge.

The blue wrap should be a selling point, it differentiates that truck from all the silver stainless steel trucks.

The problem is this is all one sided and only to keep the fake value of a truck that is going the direction of the do do bird. Trade in value continues to decrease as the truck is not selling. Just over 7k units sold is not a successful brand to invest in.

I hate Tesla but in this situation they are right. They can't resell it with the rap and stickers all over it. They will have to remove all of that and it will cost them money. Everyone knows that with cars, keep them 100% original if you want to trade in value. That goes for every car company. You can upgrade the stereo system and they will pay you less because they have a harder time selling the cars if it's not and it's original condition. Ask any car collector, they don't want any aftermarket stuff on their cars.

A basic google search of “does a wrap hurt a stainless steel cyber truck” found atleast 24 different photos of blemishes and scratches after removing wrap. And the ai prompt also says it damages it.

A friend told got his Cybertruck wrapped to stop rust on the stainless steel body it was too hard to maintain original truck finish.

Strange ideas that company has did anybody here in the news about the man that took his Tesla brand new to the car wash and when it came out of the car wash, the whole electrical system was basically ruined and Tesla would not give him any sympathy, monetary or warranty coverage for the problem. Apparently in the manual you're supposed to flick a switch of some sort to car wash mode. Something the man said that no one told him about when he bought it now. Is that absolutely ridiculous or not??!?

One often overlooked advantage of franchised dealers is the ability to shop around for better bids on your trade-in when buying a new vehicle. When you only have the factory to value your trade, it becomes a take it or leave it proposal.

Bobm (not verified)    June 29, 2025 - 2:35PM

Let's be honest. Tesla is one of the worst companies for customer service. Certainly in the auto industry, and maybe in any industry.

Christopher Al… (not verified)    June 29, 2025 - 3:30PM

Yep, Tesla prefers all vehicles be brought back to their original condition prior to being drove off the factory lot. Any add-ons that you may think are cool may not be to others and as a result they will depreciate the value. Tesla isn't going to resell your pink Cybertruck.

Cole Trickle (not verified)    June 29, 2025 - 4:39PM

This is the dumbest question.EVERYONE knows aftermarket mods dont add value they actually hinder it. ??? getting any new car and throwing a vinyl wrap on their pant with stickers or magnets is gonna lower your value. How much ? thats a whole other conversation lol...

Mike DeGroot (not verified)    June 29, 2025 - 7:32PM

Most domestic dealerships will deduct trade in value on vehicles that have aftermarket modifications, no matter how much those modifications cost.
The reason is the current owner created a physical vehicle that appeals to his or her tastes specifically. It would undoubtedly take well over a 90 day period for a buyer with the same tastes in the modifications to walk in and want to pay big bucks for something that someone else designed for themselves.

Jim bob (not verified)    June 29, 2025 - 10:18PM

Crazy to think that someone you think they could sell their car back to the dealer and expect them to be able to resell said vehicle and what, warranty your preferred aftermarket accessories 🤦

Rick Norvell (not verified)    June 29, 2025 - 10:41PM

I'm just curious how you got magnets to stick to stainless steel it being a non ferrous metal and all? Sticky spray adhesive? Something iron on the backside? Surely you didn't put any holes in it?

David (not verified)    June 30, 2025 - 3:23AM

Why are people complaining about things that would affect the trade-in value of any vehicle they drove? This is not specifically regulated to Tesla's. It is the medias constant attempt to hammer Elon musk and his companies for anything that they would stretch to this level of ridiculousness is par for the course and completely expected. However, shame on you. You're all just a bunch of haters literal haters The same people that you guys literally claim to be against You can't go a day without expressing your hatred in public ways like this.

Reality (not verified)    June 30, 2025 - 6:16AM

Tesla or not, the reality is car dealers, especially ones handling used cars, should not be trusted; they have an agenda, and it's separating you from as much money as possible.

Now, account for the fact that Musk has made the Tesla brand TOXIC and global sales are apparently down 45%, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them take every opportunity to cut their price for trade-ins as inventory is just going to sit and devalue.

William Merk (not verified)    June 30, 2025 - 7:42AM

Most dealers will subtract wrap as damage. For ICE cars, they consider cat deletes, or any other exhaust mods as damage. Same with engine mods. Only ones who might consider mods worthwhile is a private sale, but almost all dealerships will consider mods as damage.

Patrick (not verified)    June 30, 2025 - 10:42AM

Have you seen what happened to the stainless steel after you remove a wrap? It's destroyed. You can not put a wrap on bare metal. It is made for painted surfaces. The stickers leach into the bare metal and cause stains and discoloration on bare metal. That's why they consider it damage.

Nick (not verified)    June 30, 2025 - 11:12AM

Apparently when you wrap a cybertruck the stainless steel underneath that wrap will (sometimes) be ruined by the wrap. Like if you have letters or pictures on the wrap it could etch that picture or word into the stainless steel (which wont come out). Thats at least what I heard around town. Probably the reason they deducted money for "physical damage". Not 100% sure about this but just something iver heard going around.

Sam Wise (not verified)    June 30, 2025 - 11:48AM

If you bought a cybertruck, you're a sucker. With all the information available about Tesla, their quality, their customer service, and their disgusting business and labor practices, any person who buys a Tesla deserves whatever happens to them.

No sympathy here.
