Bryan Gordon, a Cybertruck owner from Virginia, says that just 15 minutes after delivery, his truck started showing error messages related to the high-voltage battery.
While this was definitely frustrating, he felt relieved after a few hours when the error codes disappeared on their own and the truck resumed normal operation.
That was seven months ago, and Bryan reports he has not experienced any issues with his Cybertruck since then.
However, today Tesla unexpectedly reached out to him, saying his truck needs a new high-voltage battery.
This is the main 800-volt battery pack that powers the truck and costs over $20,000 to replace out of warranty.
According to Bryan, Tesla told him they conducted remote diagnostics and determined his current battery pack needs to be replaced urgently.
Bryan was definitely surprised by Tesla's sudden decision and shared his thoughts in the Cybertruck Owners Only group on Facebook.
He writes…
“Has anyone here with a Cybertruck experienced this problem before?
I got into mine Saturday morning, drove 15 minutes, parked, and came back 40 minutes later to find a high-voltage battery error on the screen.
I drove it back home for 15 minutes, contacted the service, and scheduled an appointment. I did some online research and read that leaving the truck alone for several hours might help because the code could be a false reading and might clear itself if left untouched.
It worked, the errors disappeared, and I haven’t had this issue ever since.
I drive from Fredericksburg, VA, to DC every day for work, supercharging to 80% daily since I have free charging for a year.
The truck hasn’t lost any range, charges normally, and all systems are functioning properly.
Even in the service menus, there are no issues with the high-voltage system, and everything is in good standing.
However, today, Tesla service contacted me through the app and said they performed an over-the-air diagnostic and need to replace my high-voltage battery.
The truck is 7 months old with 26k miles. I am completely stunned by this situation.”
This is definitely not ideal; however, even if it won’t cost him anything, Bryan says he doesn’t want Tesla to replace the high-voltage battery pack.
Bryan is concerned that the replacement battery pack Tesla provides will be a refurbished one, which could mean he might end up with a battery that performs worse.
Bryan continues to write…
“I honestly don’t want them to replace the high-voltage battery because they replace it with a refurbished pack instead of a new one.
I have a friend who had this done on his Model Y, and he actually lost range.”
Below his post, Bryan included a picture of his Cybertruck center screen showing the high voltage battery alerts that popped up.
The Error messages read…
- HVBATT_a 056
Unable to charge
Service is required
- HVBATT_a742
Vehicle may not
What is interesting here is that for 7 months Bryan has been driving his truck believing everything was fine; however, the early error messages were actually pertinent, and now Tesla is informing him he will need a high-voltage battery replacement.
This is definitely not ideal; however, looking at the comments, a few Cybertruck owners shared that they, too, have experienced similar issues.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, Emmanuel Rosa, writes…
“Happened to me yesterday out of nowhere, Tesla is replacing the HV battery”
Below his post, Emmanuel shared a picture of his Cybertruck center screen showing similar high-voltage battery errors he received.
Overall, a few owners of relatively new Cybertrucks seem to be experiencing battery pack failures. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
