"I took my new Tacoma to the dealer for its first oil change. When I got home, I saw oil all over my garage floor. What is going on?"
That's what happened to Andy Flynn after he took his 2024 Toyota Tacoma to the Toyota dealer to get his first oil change. You can imagine his shock at seeing a large oil puddle under his new pickup.
He says on the Toyota Tacoma Owners Facebook page, "I had my first 10,000-mile oil change done on my 2024 Toyota Tacoma at the Toyota dealership yesterday. I just noticed a large oil puddle in the garage. I crawled under the truck but couldn't get the best pictures because I had to slide under from the side to avoid the massive oil spill. It appears to be leaking from the drain. Is there a problem with my new truck?"
Imagine buying a new 2024 Toyota Tacoma and wanting to keep it in good running condition. The salesperson told you to bring your truck in for its first service at 10,000 miles, so that's what you do.
The service advisor informs you that they will be changing the oil and oil filter, checking the brakes, and rotating the tires. They will also inspect the wiper blades, check the cabin air filter, and top off any necessary fluids as needed. The service will take about an hour, so you wait in the service area lounge.
The advisor tells you your truck is ready, and all goes as planned. Your Tacoma comes with the ToyotaCare maintenance plan, which covers oil changes, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections. So, they hand you the keys, drop off your pickup on the service drive, and you drive away.
You are thinking, "That was easy, and I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket. Just like the salesperson told me when I bought the truck. Toyota is taking care of me. That was a good experience."
What happened next leaves Andy wondering.
Andy parks his truck in his garage and goes inside the house. However, when he goes out to get his phone, which he left in the pickup, he sees a large puddle of oil under his truck. Now he's wondering what's going on. Is there a problem with his new pickup?
He even crawls underneath to take a look. He posts the pictures on the Tacoma owners' Facebook page, which he joined, to ask if anyone else knows what's going on. He's seeking the advice and support of his fellow Tacoma owners.
Andy says, "Looks like it's leaking from the drain. Is there anything else I should be looking for?"
Does the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Have An Oil Leak Problem?
While some Tacoma owners have reported oil leaks in their pickups, these leaks are typically associated with the timing chain cover. However, Andy's problem does not appear to be coming from the front of the engine but from the oil drain plug.
Here are the likely culprits for Andy's puddle of oil underneath his new Tacoma.
The most likely culprits are a loose drain plug, a misaligned or overtightened oil filter, or a damaged seal or gasket. Andy inspected the area where the oil was leaking, but was unable to determine precisely where it was coming from. Now, he'll need to take it back to the Toyota dealer.
Here's a more detailed look at potential causes:
- Loose Drain Plug: The drain plug is a common point of leaks. Ensure it's properly tightened, and if it's damaged, a new washer or gasket may be needed.
- Oil Filter: An improperly installed or overtightened oil filter can cause leaks. Make sure the filter is seated correctly and not over-tightened.
- Damaged Seals/Gaskets: Over time, seals and gaskets can deteriorate, resulting in leaks. Look for leaks around the oil pan, valve cover, or other engine components. Andy's Tacoma is new, so this is not the problem.
What are other Tacoma owners saying?
Most comments agree on one point: the Toyota technician likely didn't replace the oil plug gasket.
Conclusion
Should the plug gasket be replaced with every oil change?
While some Toyota dealerships may replace the oil drain plug gasket with each oil change, it's not a universally mandated practice. Some dealerships might replace it, while others might reuse the gasket if it's in good condition.
In Andy's case, when the Toyota technician changed the oil, he was in a hurry and either failed to install a new oil plug gasket, over-tightened the oil filter, or didn't properly tighten the oil drain plug.
The Toyota technician was probably in a hurry. While all Toyota technicians are trained through Toyota's programs and certifications, not all technicians are conscientious and produce quality work.
Some Toyota dealerships even offer a bonus or incentive structure to encourage technicians to perform work efficiently and effectively, potentially leading to higher overall compensation, which can help prevent problems like Andy's oil leak from occurring.
Andy probably had a technician who was preoccupied and did a sloppy job on his new Tacoma oil change. Now, he has to take extra time and have the Toyota dealer fix the problem.

Well obviously this guy doesn’t care about his investment. Wake up folks…there are good reasons for people disliking turbo 4’s. A turbo motor should NEVER go more than 3,000 miles on an oil change. At this point, you should be
on your 3rd oil change. Moving on, have you ever seen the techs at Toyota? If not, learn how to do an oil change…it’s quite literally the easiest thing on the planet to do and you get peace of mind. You can buy oil dirt cheap at Walmart.

Scheduled my 16k (km) service and the dealer couldn't remove the skid plate be the technician stripped a bolt somehow. As well, experiencing an issue with the safety senors where it thinks there is a trailer attached. Dealer told me the problem is the "aftermarket" trailer hitch installed. They weren't even able to determine it was a factory hitch. They simply could have compared to the Tacoma in the show room. Very disappointed and now very concerned about the competence of Toyota trained technicians. Feel like I would be wasting my time in connecting Toyota Canada.

I stopped taking my Toyotas to the dealers for oil change, long long time ago. Started first with a super tight filter casing in my a Prius 2015 I owned. I had to break the casing and spend $50 in a new one. Other time, the oil was dirty after supposedly being changed. Since then, I've been doing my own oil changes in my Ravs and very happy.

10,000 miles for your first oil change??? Terrible idea. There are metal shavings from manufacturing in there. Do it minimally at 4000 or 5000 miles. Great way to get less out of an expensive vehicle by listening to a sales rep that is toeing the company line. Oh well, your problem now.

Took my Honda crv to dealer for oil change & the employee didn't tighten the drain plug adequately & the result was a leak . Didn't pour out but consistently dripped. Returned to the dealer day later & tighten the plug. Gave me credit for (2) free oil changes. It happens ! But I learned to look afterwards from that point on .

I always mark and take pics of my tires prior to oil change and tire rotation, 3 different times 3 dealers they lied and did not rotate my tires until I called them out on it. Also I paid for top battery lifetime guarantee near 200 dollars ,well I got home and they toyota dealers cheated me and gave me lowest of 3 new battery's cheapest one ,I called manager did not believe me, so I sent pics , had too drive back another 38 miles I told them you will give me multiple discounts because long drive ,I was first customer so not over worked , he gave me lifetime battery I got too watch this time for 79.99, plus hand written next free oil change . I was ok with it, but shows you how they cheat customers or and do shoddy work, but I catch em and nail em

I took my brand new 2023 Toyota 4 runner in for the first oil change at 5000 because we believe in the 5000 mile oil change over 10,000. They told me they would only rotate my tires, but I said no just an oil change (I get my tires done by someone else, so they won't scratch my wheels), I drive my car home after the oil change and we went out of town. My son calls and ask why I have oil under my car? It turns out the technician did not properly tighten the oil filter down. What a let down and huge mess!

Bought a used 2018 Tacoma a few years ago. Taking truck through the car wash, the left roof trim comes off. My local Toyota dealership has supposedly fixed the problem. After the last fix I passed a semi going the other and turbulence blew it completely off. Finally bought 3M trim adhesive and fixed it myself.
My biggest problem with the dealership is after each oil change they come back with a laundry list of recommended repairs. Being an "old car guy" I know must of these are just money makers for the dealership. An example is just before it took it in last time I cleaned the mass air flow sensor myself. Well you guessed it, they recommended it be cleaned. That along with having the wheel alignment checked be a trusted front end shop, they recommended an alignment.
.My point is there are hundreds of thousands of people that will fall for these money making repairs that aren't necessary at that time if at all. Now that my complementary oil changes are complete I will be taking it it myself trusted mechanic that kept my 20 old Saturn running!

Had something similar happen to my 2011 Toyota Sienna. I normally do my own oil change, but toyota had a special that I couldn't refuse. Their price was lower that what I would do it for. Had it done on a Friday, and noticed the oil on my garage floor Saturday morning. Fortunately, service dept. was still opened. They asked me if I need it towed. I told them that it wasn't a lot of oil, so I should be able to drive it, which I did.
Turned out, they had pinched one of the O rings.
On returning home, I stopped short of backing all the way in my garage so that I could clean the spill. On getting out of my car, then noticed oil on my door panel, my mat, my steering wheel and my hands. I call them, and they offered to detail my minivan. I told them thanks, but my vehicle will never be back through those doors. I then detailed my vehicle myself

I think this is a bucketful of crap. If the oil plug or oil filter were not tightened, he would have seen oil under the truck before leaving for one. Depending on how far he lives from the dealership how long do you think it takes to drain 7 quarts or oil?

2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid, had the same situation, my service technician stated the person who changed the oil, prior to my noticing some type of leak, was a gasket issue. It was resolved after I brought it to their attention and took a picture of what it looked like in my driveway under the truck.

I’ve had the exact same thing happened to me. I bought a 2024 Toyota Tacoma from teen Toyota in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I brought my Tacoma and first first oil change at 5000 miles which I paid for I’m a firm believer and changing my oil at every 5000 miles and I will continue to do so back home big old spot underneath the truck. I climbed onto the truck twisted the plug with my fingers, no wrench needed when I climb out underneath the truck I figured I better look at all the other stuff that they were supposed to have inspected being that they had rotated my tires and all they made not tighten them up inspect parts. I raise the hood. Part of the inspection was the battery and I looked and there was corrosion around the terminals, so I went back and looked at the receipt that they gave me and then inspection points that they’ve checked off battery was checked off as being inspected and in good shape that they did not complete their job at this point when inside called the dealership to talk to manager he asked me to tighten the plug back and bring the truck back in and he would take care of the problem so I tighten the plug up brought the truck back to them. He replaced the battery when they handed me the keys back to my truck he said he put a new battery in here for you , but it’s not the right battery for the truck but this one will work and I think it’ll work better for you. This is because we don’t have the right battery for your truck so I have to have my truck left very unsatisfied with the service so if any a few weeks , I had a brake light issue and I did not feel confident in their workmanship so therefore I called LeBlanc Toyota in Baton Rouge and asked them to fix my brake light issue. This is where I will go to have my work done for now on. they are very professional told him about my battery issue and they said I will have my technician look at this. Also come back and said this is not the right battery for the truck. This battery will not last this battery belongs in a car, but we cannot replace it because it came out of team Toyota inventory so if you would go back to them and ask them to put the right battery back in this truck and tell them that we looked at it and advised you to do so because this battery will not hold up and this is what I’ve done so when I went back to team Toyota talk to the same manager, he told me the reason we put this battery in your truck because the battery that belongs in this truck will not fit even took me to the back with the batteries restored and tried to show me the difference why the batteries won’t fit. He said look. This is the battery that goes in your truck. Look how big it is it won’t fit. Don’t know that battery that goes in my truck so as of now I’m still riding around with a car battery in my truck according to, the technicians from Toyota and says this battery will not last. It is too small so at this point where I bought my truck team Toyota will no longer get my business with one last thing being said at the time of purchasing my truck I did not purchase just one vehicle , I purchased my truck 2024 Toyota Tacoma and I also purchased my wife’s car a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross so that is two brand new cars purchased at the same time putting my trust into a Toyota dealership that treats me this way I expect better for somebody who’s purchased two brand new vehicles in the same day please respond back to me and give me your thoughts. Looking forward to it. You’re very disappointed customer Alvin Winters.

I had the body shop at my Toyota dealer in E. Rochester, NY (Hoselton Toyota) replace my left rear fender after I damaged it. They must have used an aftermarket cheap replacement fender because the gas door spring broke a few months later and quit opening and shutting without hitting my paint. I have to force the door down to shut it and the paint job is terrible. Within a year the bottom of the panel paint is gone and the body is rusting there. On the right fender the paint is still intact with no rust from the factory. I complained about it and they did nothing to offer to fix it the right way for me. Mind you, I have bought 3 new Tacoma's from this dealer from 2010 to 2018. I will never go to them for anything again. They have lost my business.
