"Why has my $50,000 2022 Chevy Silverado pickup been in the shop five times now, and it doesn't even have 40,000 miles on it? Can't anyone build a good pickup?"
This sentiment echoes through the community of Silverado owners, a shared frustration among many who purchased a truck in the last 3 years.
Before we hear from Scott Meyer, a 2022 Chevy Silverado owner, imagine buying a new Chevrolet Silverado pickup in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic is finally coming to an end, and things are starting to return to normal.
You've always had a Chevy truck, and it's time to buy a new one.
The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado received several updates, including revised exterior styling and an enhanced interior for LT and higher trims.
So, you decide to pull the trigger and get a new truck. You didn't spring for the top-of-the-line ZR2, but you bought an LT trim level and spent $50,000. It's a nice truck.
For the first year, everything was going well, and then the problems began. Over the last two years, the truck has been in the shop due to issues with the lifters, transmission problems, and electrical malfunctions. It's been at the Chevrolet dealer five times now.
The last issue required you to have it towed to the dealer because your engine suddenly shut down for no apparent reason.
Scott Meyer shares his story on the 2019 - 2025 Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra Owners Facebook page, inviting others to join the discussion.
He says, "If you have one of the few trucks without issues, then this post is not for you, and I am thrilled for you. If you have a turd, stick around for some validation."
"With all of the issues that EVERY brand is having reliability-wise, is it too much to ask just to get back to the basics and start producing well-engineered, reliable vehicles with limited electronics, and a sturdy frame, suspension, and power train?"
"At this point, manufacturers need to stop spending time and energy worrying about the fancy add-ons and electronics, and most of all, the government needs to get out of the emission regulation B.S."
"On the other hand, I'm smart enough to know why things are the way they are. If they produced a quality product, they wouldn't make massive amounts of money on service and replacement, so as the consumer, they bend us over with subpar vehicles to make their shareholders happy."
"And am I 'disgruntled"? Yes. I am. Wouldn't you be if you've had a vehicle you paid $50k for in the shop 5 times before it hits 40k miles?"
"It's a sad world we live in when, as a 41-year-old male, I am disgusted at the quality of just about everything produced, but especially the trucks that just can't seem to 'truck' anymore."
"I need a truck that can handle gravel roads, farm work, and trailers."
"Not a glorified mom mobile that gets my wife and the kids to Target on a Saturday afternoon and pulls the boat to the lake 3 times a year. If you want that, get an SUV."
"So, in conclusion, if you've made it this far, thanks for coming to my TED talk, and here's a picture of my piece of junk."
“There's nothing better than a sleek black truck. I wish I could drive it without something breaking. We're over 45 minutes to the nearest town and dealership."
"I want to know how many of my fellow Chevy Silverado owners think that changes need to be made?"
Before You Add Your Comments Below
Scott says, "I've got a friend who works for the Chevy plant in Wentzville, and he said post-COVID manufacturing was rushed out the door just to get trucks back on the market after being short on line workers. I have a feeling that subpar parts and manufacturing rushes played a lot into these post-COVID models."
Sean Brittell - "Ford, GM, Ram, and even Toyota trucks are all junk. These new trucks are throwaways pretty much. $ 60-$80,000 for a half-ton pickup, and some don't reach 30,000 miles without major issues. The big three should be ashamed of the junk they are selling us."
Does post-COVID manufacturing have something to do with the unreliability of new GM pickups?
According to Automotive Fleet Magazine, vehicle quality slipped in 2022.
The report says, "In 2022, the industry average was 180 problems per 100 vehicles. In 2021, it was 162 problems per 100 vehicles. A lower score reflects higher vehicle quality."
"The bottom line is that in 2021, the automotive industry was producing higher-quality vehicles than it is today in 2022."
What are the reasons why vehicle quality dropped in 2022?
They say, "There are several reasons why this has occurred, but a commonly cited reason is that 2022 vehicles, on average, are the most technologically complex models produced."
David Amodeo, director of global automotive at J.D. Power, says, "Supply chain disruption, especially the shortage of microchips, has caused automakers to seek alternative solutions to get new vehicles into purchasers' and lessees' hands."
"In some cases, new vehicles are being shipped without some features installed. Communication with them about the changes in feature availability, as well as when such features will be reinstated, is critical to their satisfaction."
The report states that the more complex the vehicle, the greater its reliance on microchips, and the greater the likelihood that microchip shortages have negatively impacted it.
Another unhappy 2022 Chevrolet Silverado owner shares the same sentiments.
I recently reported on Aaron Sullivan's 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, which has 33,000 miles and has been at the dealer five times. Now his 10-speed transmission needs to be replaced.
Aaron says, "33,500 miles and the Z71 5.3 10-speed trans is gone. I'm off to the dealer for my transmission that left me stranded for three days. I got the "Transmission hot idle engine" code just before it died."
"This truck has already been at the dealer for a rear differential/suspension since I purchased it. And I had to wait for it because a new unit was backordered."
"Now it's the transmission. The Chevrolet dealer says they have at least five trucks like mine with transmission problems that are currently waiting to be seen by a mechanic."
"The 10 speeds are falling apart," he says, shaking his head in disbelief.
Conclusion:
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent manufacturing disruptions, particularly the chip shortage, likely contributed to the initial quality issues and potential unreliability of some GM pickup trucks produced during and immediately after the pandemic.
However, it's also important to acknowledge positive reliability data and consider that overall vehicle quality can be influenced by multiple factors beyond the pandemic's immediate impact.
Now, Back To Scott's Question

With the sub-par quality, there are so many
layers. I was a quality engineer/manager for 25 years, most of it at the (OEM) tier 2 and 1 levels. It's all about the $$$$, down to the sub-supplier (and even department) levels. Whether I was trying to implement improvements, stop gaps, or just trying to stop the bleeding of a long-term product sort, my worst enemies weren't the customer or the sub-supplier...they were my own ppl, higher ups. Because how dare I spend money to make their cheaply designed disasters right!!
Even with safety features that can cause injury or death, EVERYBODY will try to do it as cheaply as possible while trying to make as much as possible. Forget about respect, reputation and doing things right because we should. It's a true rarity in automotive manufacturing.

I am thinking about getting a new 2025 or 2026 GMC Sierra, but with all the problems that’s been happening. I think I might just look for an early model Tundra. It’s a sad day when these companies don’t give a damm about us as customers who want a good quality vehicle. That would last at least ten years before something goes wrong. I have a 2002 Chevy1500express still going strong. But it’s time for something new. The cost of the new vehicles are just crazy. There is no justification for ripping off the customer for these vehicles, especially when they don’t last past their warranty.

The truck drank oil, we would suddenly lose engine power, and the truck would be bone dry even after an oil change. Then there was the slip in the transmission, which could almost give you whiplash. 14 visits to the dealer and they would say theres nothing wrong with it. Biggest lemon ever.

I have to say I have been a Chevy truck person my whole life I refuse to drive any other kind of vehicle. That being said after my 03 Chevrolet kicked the bucket and I had to get anew truck (by new I mean used but new to me) so I went out looking and knew just what I wanted A Chevrolet Silverado and one that was newer than my 03 since it was 2024. So very first used car deal we drove by I seen the truck and said that's the one I looked at it took it for a test drive and everything seemed great. The truck is a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado z71 ltz it had like 72,000 miles on it and only had like 2 owners. So I decided to get this $40,000 truck and everything was fine for the first 6 months then it started shifting hard, a couple of times if wouldn't shift, it down shifts when it shouldn't, and it is making a shuttering noise. when I am coming down and up the hill by my house it starts vibrating my seat and a red light on the dash comes on I am not sure why it does that but it only does it here and there. The truck had the thing where it will keep you in your lane, and Im not sure why but 2 times it has tried to steer me to one side and I mean I am pulling the wheel to keep in my lane and it is pulling against me. Now I have done my fair share of research and talk to a few different mechanics and I have found out that GM has recalled the transmission in a lot of trucks same make model and everything as mine but not my batch. I have tried to get them to recall my batch but nothing seems to be working I can't afford to pay to get the truck fixed not with the monthly payments of the truck my mechanic said I need the transmission rebuilt. I am starting to think maybe Chevrolet isn't what it use to be and I guess I am going to have to look at getting a different brand. Chevy use to be the best truck in the road but I guess the days of Chevrolet being the best is over...

Well, back in 1996 I bought a brand new Silverado extended cab with the v8 Vortech, Traded in my 92 Chevy, had an 83 before that...I was all about Chevy. She was a beauty. After two transmissions and 3 fuel pumps with the last one burning up the wiring harness, I traded her in while she was still in the shop at 26,400 miles on a 1997 F150. Since then I have owned several F150s and a 2007 Tundra. Currently I own a 2020 F150, and I almost considered trading for a GMC crew cab then I came to my senses. None of the F150s, nor the Tundra have had me walking. My father in law, on a regular basis says, when you gonna get rid of that ugly Ford, and I just smile and say beauty is only skin deep.

I bought a new 2017 1500 in 2018 and it's a piece of work. I pulled very light trailers only a few times so basic highway and city driving and had to have my transmission replaced last year. Now my heat shield it rattling. And I'm not going to pay for another repair. When it dies again, I will not buy another Chevy truck. That sucks because 2 my two grandfather's and parents worked for and were loyal to GM. They ended up cutting a crap load of their retirement and their products are garbage!
That's what loyalty gets you in the 2000s.

I currently own what I now call my Covid produced Truck .. it's a 2021 Silverado, produced in October of 2020 as a new model 2021 .. it's a1500 Z71 Trail Boss/ work truck model w/ limited essential options .. not even an LT version with all the bells and whistles .. it's now been in the shop and towed to the dealership 3 times in its short 41000 mile life .
1. Starter bad, 27000 miles
2. Electrical issues, just out of BB warranty/ due to a rotted ground strap behind the passenger wheel well .. lost P/S steering, all dash lights lit up, limp mode on the engine ... Note: dealership did not find or repair the issue, I fixed it with a new ground strap ..
3. Engine into limp mode .. engine injectors fried , extended warranty I had purchased covered this issue.
4. Tailgate dropping on its own ..electrical issues.
5. Brake caliper leak ,brake sensor inop, dealership can't fix the sensor issue
6. A/C compressor seized up , covered under extended warranty, a warranty that I recommend to anyone that owned one of these trucks ..
All these issues and many more and all I have is 41000 miles on the truck.. I will never purchase anything else from GM and I have been a lifetime owner of their products ... This truck has turned me off to there products for me .. Sad, profits over Quality and their push to electrify there vehicles to accommodate the government verses their customers .. they need to reevaluate their products and quality control or that are done in a few more years !!

I’m retired from the Military. I finally was able to purchase a brand new 2022 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton for cash. During the 1st month it died on the side of the road. Brought it in to a Chevrolet Dealership for warranty. It stayed for 5 weeks with parts on backorder.
After that visit there was a stream of issues with the computer. For a year and a half it was in and out of Dealerships. Each time it was in they would reprogram the computer. Finally they ordered a new radio and some other widget. After reprogramming it again that problem seems, at least for now, to be taken care of. Now out of warranty I must purchase an extended warranty. Can’t trust the truck without it.

Once I reach the speed of 70 mph the steering wheel vibrate as well as the center console. I have spent thousands of dollars to coreect this problem. Until finally I google the problem. And Lord behold chevy knows about the problem. So why isnt there a recall for this issue. The chevrolet dealerships knows the problem exists. But do they fix it.Noooo the tell your everything else while this problem still exist. I have had this truck since 2016 as I mention prior the shake is still and while rest under 90 thousands miles. Shame on you Chevrolet. Its terrible. Nice looking truck with terrible known problems.

Lately I had been thinking about going a bit newer. Thanks to this article I think I will just hold off (sorry fellows for all
your troubles) I agree every manufacturer now a days makes things last the minimum they can That way they can make ya get another, I have always loved that Chevy,'s parts were interchangeable for many generations at a time instead of a year here and there. I always thought of Chevy as one of the last that cared about consumers and having pride in their durability. I guess for a while longer I am gonna keep these ol girls and be thankful they all 4wd works, they still running and pulling a load when needed . I hope you each get something settled. It's good to see people speak up about what's going on!

I have a 2014 Silverado with the 4.3 l V6 and I bought it used with only 24,000 miles on it 2 years ago. It has 39,000 miles now and it has been in the shop seven times since I bought it. Ball joints going out left and right control arms being replaced. Now I have a steering issue. It's a popping sound when I turn my wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right. Probably a inner tie rod end. You know that's going to be high dollar to have fixed. I've had it tuned up with new spark plugs and wires when it does it even need it yet. I had to do that three different times. With top quality equipment. GM. What is your problem? You guys don't build things like you did in the 70s. Huge let down. I will never buy a newer vehicle ever again. I will rebuild a 70s or '80s model first with a older crate motor. Definite not worth it. I'm looking to get rid of it as we speak. Would you like to buy it back from me? 39,000 miles. But it needs the instrument cluster replaced because it makes my oil pressure gauge ping back and forth. But pressure is fine according to my meter.

We have a 2020 Chevy Custom Silverado. At 80K miles ( yeah, lucky!) and it shifted horribly. 28 days at the dealership, the second time! First time, two weeks for a turbocharger issue. The second time we were told it needed a valve port. But no replacement parts to be found. Interestingly, no gmc rentals to be had. Finally, after 2 weeks, they provided a Chevy Malibu. Hmmm. Not a truck. Not exactly a comparable vehicle. But then we discovered the dealership had other guests trucks waiting for the, you guessed it, valve port! On the 28th day, they had a rebuilt transmission installed. We realized this truck never ran well when we bought it used from the dealer. Less than 24 hours of having the transmission installed, we lose the power steering, going around a curve at about 35mph
and the dash lit up like a christmas tree with a variety of warnings! It was towed back to the dealship. Lose connections, " bad sensors" replaced including a better connection to the battery. All at, er, no charge. Chevy Silverado 4cyl turbo chargers, beware.

Flush, new filter and fluid seems to have rid most that issue. Fast forward to ‘24, engine knock/misfire ends up being failed lifter due to active fuel management system. Fixed, ran about 9 months and happened again. Since I’ve purchased the AFM disabling unit and no further issues. $230 unit or $3000 lifter repair…easy decision. Next truck will be a restoration of a Chevy with the old reliable Vortec…or gut my 19 and take it old school.

Let me sadly add to the list my 2024Trailboss. First indication os a problem was under 5,000 miles when every gauge stopped working, AC fan went to high speed, aĺ warning indicators were cycling through the display and the power steering slowly failed as I barely got off the highway.
First time in the dealership shop, after a week, they claimed they couldn't find anything wrong even though I shared a video of the event.
Next time I called the tow truck and didn't reset the system by disconnecting the negative battery cable. They kept it two days only to bla.e it on a bad battery after only 10,000 miles.
Well it's happened 5 times and still no solution. So I'm going to use Florida's Lemon Law to get them to either buy it back or replace it with what will probably be another POS.
I've been a Silverado owner since my 1998 . The 2016 dropped a lifter and ruin the engine and now this truck is retarded. Sad thing is it's a beautiful truck, even on the tow truck which appears to be a big part of it's future 😢
