What is wrong with the steering on some of the 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HDs?

A number of owners of the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD complain that the steering is loose or wanders. Chevrolet has issued a Technical Service Bulletin about it, but owners say it doesn't fix the problem.

One of the hottest topics on a Chevrolet Silverado forum right, now concerns problems with steering on some of the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HDs. Some drivers are complaining that the truck steering is so sloppy, they are afraid to drive it.

The complaint was first posted last summer by someone called Queen. “The 2nd week I had it and the power steering box started leaking terribly- as in puddle on the driveway. Took it to different dealer as the 1st on was horrible. They sealed the leak and gave me the truck back until the part (power steering box) comes back in. So I leave the dealer, guess what? The steering is sloppy. About 2-3 inches I can move the wheel left or right before it is responsive. It wanders and constantly has to be corrected. Everyone says "it's impossible" because it's a mechanical system. Until they drive it and they go "oh my I see what you are saying". Meanwhile I have a $60,000 truck I worry about driving to work or towing to go camping this weekend while I wait for a power steering box from GM. VERY frustrating.”

Since that first post, there have been nearly 400 others. Most are other 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD owners who are reporting similar issues.

Thang says “I’m in the same boat! Brand new 2016 2500HD LTZ Z71. Just turned 7500 miles and started getting 2 to 3 inches of slop in the steering. Slack/Lash whatever it’s called.Dealer drove it and said HOLY S%$# this ain’t right!”

General Motors has issued a Technical Service Bulletin for the problem, it is lengthy.

“#PIT5501C: Steering Feels Loose / Excessive Lash / Fluid Leak At Lash Adjuster (Adjust Steering Gear). The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern
Some owners may comment that the steering feels loose, there is excessive play in the steering, and/or a small power steering fluid leak from the steering gear lash adjuster may be noted. These concerns could be caused by an incorrect Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment.”
The TSB wants the service people to ask the owners all sorts of questions about where and how the vehicle was driven. Was it driven offroad? Have they towed anything? Has the truck been lifted or modified in any way? Did the problem occur quickly or slowly get worse?

The TSB recommends that the service people concentrate on the Pittman Arm and lash adjuster stud/nut/cover interface. It sounds as if the nut or stud comes loose and allows too much play in the steering. Gunny posted “I just picked my truck up and this dealer knew about the problems with the play in the
steering wheel. The play is caused by a adjusting screw in the steering box backing out causing the play in the steering wheel. The fix is using a chemical call loctite to keep the screw from backing out.Seems to be back to normal and only time will tell if comes back.”

A Maryland driver says the fix didn’t last very long. “Got it back and within 600 miles it got worse. Had 3-4 inches of play. Took it back and they fixed it. Said they did a long list of items plus recal of sensors. The paperwork states...remove steering box and perform adjustment procedure per bulletin #pit5501c. reset btoe in. relearn steering angle sensor & p/s pressure sensor learn.”

Enthusiasts note that the issue seems to be only on trucks built at in Flint, not in Fort Wayne. No indication as to why.

Apparently the TSB is updated a couple of times “#PIT5501D - Steering Feels Loose / Excessive Lash / Fluid Leak At Lash Adjuster (Replace Pitman Shaft and Adjust over center lash)
Subject: Steering Feels Loose / Excessive Lash / Fluid Leak At Lash Adjuster (Replace Pitman Shaft and Adjust over center lash) Models: 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 2016 GMC Sierra 2500/3500.”

There are so many of these complaints that dealers are now suspicious of people coming in with the TSB. Many dealers are just ordering new steering boxes. “He told me, he would never try PIT5501C or D. . He told me it is a very complicated system and setting it to OEM is difficult and that I would never be happy with the steering if they attempted to follow the PIT5501 C&D. That's why they just ordered a complete new steering gear box to begin with.”

In all, there are 27 pages of complaints about this issue. One person who describes himself as a GM tech tried to help the angry owners but was hounded off the site by hostile posters. They are furious that the service departments don’t seem to know how to fix the problem long term and they don’t feel they are receiving help from GM and Chevrolet.

As of right now, it appears that the 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500 HDs are not having similar problems. No word of a recall for the 2016s, although the problems are reportedly widespread.

Hi Patrick,
My experience is very different... I have towed my 15K 5'er several places and the GMC3500 is a dream for towing. My issue was the steering suddenly and dramatically changed (While not towing, thankfully). I brought the truck in to the dealer and they made repairs according to TSB PIT5501 and it is driving perfectly, for now, I am cautiously optimistic..

Hi Tom, glad to hear dealer was able to help you out. Hopefully that'll be the last of the issues you have. Did they do the adjustment for you under warranty?

My 2016 2500HD w/ duramax is doing the same thing! It's been too 3 dealerships before a service manager & tech knew what was going on. Waiting to see if GM will cover it as is about 900 miles out of warranty.

I have a 2016 2500 hd Silverado Ltz duramax I have been to the dealer way to many times the truck was floating to the right no matter if the road is crowned or not and when you hit small bumps it feels like the front end is very loose the steering wheel stays straight but you really feel something loose. The dealer fixed the floating after 10,000 miles of complaining also they put a steering box in and did nothing for the loose feeling. Any ideas ??

I have a 2016 GMC All Terrain 2500 with 8300 miles. I bought it new in 2016. About 2 weeks ago I started noticing excessive slack in the steering. I took it to the local Lithia GMC dealer and they found the nut on the adjustment screw backed off. They said it looked like the factory hadn't used Loctite on it. That shop couldn't align it on their rack so they sent me to a local tire shop who said they were unable to align it as there needed to be a new steering box installed. I took it back to the dealer and they said they were told by warranty people to order a rebuild kit for the steering box. I told them I didn't like that idea, that I wanted a new steering box installed. Now I am looking for answers and wondering who to contact to get the pickup fixed right.

I have 2016 GMC HD Diesel 4x4 with 37,000 Miles. Headed North On I-5, 325 miles later, my steering has about three inches of play in it. Took it to Les Schwab, they aligned it, could not fix the loose steering. Thanks to all of you for the good info. Motor City here I come.

I have a 2016 Silverado 2500 same problem, tons of slack in the steering. Wish I had known about this a couple months ago when I bought the truck. It had no play and then all of the sudden I have tons of slop. Only a couple months in on my most expensive truck and im already needing to get it fixed.

Lee McGraw (not verified)    June 27, 2018 - 9:32PM

My 2016 Denali 2500hd diesel just went in with 42,xxx miles for a oil change and tire rotation. They called and said my steering box was leaking really bad and needed replaced. Told me it was a $1500.00 job but that part should not have gone bad so soon so they called GM. GM agreed and decided to cover half the price of the repair.
After seeing this post I'm thinking they need to pay for the whole damn thing!?!

Hi Lee, I called my rep at Motor City GMC and explained about my loose steering problem. He checked with the service manager, that told him they had been having some issues with it for sure. He did say that there is no recall on it, but they would help me out on the cost. I had never seen any leaking on the garage floor so I never gave it a sevond thought. Yesterday I went under the truck, and yes it is wet all around it, but not dripping yet. I too believe that this should be a recall issue. You pay a lot of money for these trucks, and you should not have this kind of problem so few miles. Hope this helps.

I have the same thing going on with my '16 2500 and after reading these comments I am shocked GM hasn't ordered a safety recall. My truck is vital to my business & I expect GM to make it right. Are there any class action lawsuits in the works? I'm calling a lawyer tomorrow. This is total BS & a significant safety/life/death issue!

2016 2500 same problem. Chevy wants $1500 to do the repairs. Trucks had nothing but issues since the second week I've owned it!

Nick (not verified)    July 18, 2018 - 8:33PM

I have a 2016 gmc 2500 hd and have the same slop in my steering. Mine made it to 30000, however my dealership has had 6 of these trucks in the last 6 months and the rack and pinion has been the problem.

larry keith (not verified)    August 24, 2018 - 5:49PM

Update on my truck! Took it in to Evergreen Chevrolet, explained the problem & what I had discovered about the problem on this website & told them about the service bulletin. For a $145 diagnostic fee, they checked it out, called & said they would perform the necessary services as per the service bulletin & would not charge me any additional money other than the diagnostic fee. Problem is solved & I appreciate Evergreen Chevrolet for handling my problem with class. I'll be returning to Evergreen for future business!

2016 dually has a lot of play in the steering. About 3 to four inches. I've taken it in and the dealership will put a new gearbox in next week. I hope this takes care of the problem. Doesn't sound good after reading all the problems other chevy owers have had.

I'm having the same problem with my 2016 2500 Duramax LT Z four-wheel-drive, 17,000 miles, steering wheel has 3 to 4 inches of play ,Took it in for service, Service didn't seem to know anything about the problem, called later in the day to tell me that there is indeed Play in the steering, and that they were going to try an adjustment, then move forward with the new steering box if that doesn't work, told them why not just do the steering box .. Shouldn't be happening

Cody (not verified)    December 15, 2018 - 2:52PM

I have a 2016 2500 duramax that had 40000 miles in it and the steering locked up and almost caused me to run off the road it was the steering box and Chevrolet would not warranty the whole part also I was on vacation when it happened about 1000 miles from home what a pain in the ass it was to get fixed should should be a recall considering a safety issue that’s been happening to lots of people

I have a 2016 2500 HD. At 30000 it started having play in the steering. We were on a road trip this week and my wife wouldn’t drive it on some of the winding roads because of the play in the steering as she is not used to it but you shouldn’t have this issue with newer trucks. My 85 ranch truck steering is better than this truck with 50000 miles on it now. As many complaints as there all there should be.a recall.

Shanna L (not verified)    December 27, 2018 - 4:44PM

I took my 3500HD LTZ in for an oil change and tire rotation last week and was told there was an issue with the steering box and there was a slight leak. When I bought the truck I thought the steering had more play than I was used to and it pulled to the left slightly. The salesman told me the tires just needed to be rotated and they'd check it out--and everything was ok. Now at 25,000 miles I wonder if I just averted a steering disaster. My bad for not following my gut about the steering. I'm really curious now exactly how they found the issue and what the long term fix is.

I’ve owned an 03 ,09 and currently a 2012 duramax. On my 03 I’ve had a full 6@ lift kit installed and 12 bought with 6” lift kit . 2012 just replaced pitman arm and idler arm because of play which felt like steering wheel wobble.all three duramax’s have had play in steering wheel to where you can it a little before your truck responds. Wife hates it but I feel it’s normal for a 3/4 or 1 ton.. I also have a 99 Cummins and its not near as tight as the chevys steering. Nothing drives like a Chevy.

Bought my 2016 Silverado Hd 250 brand new.At 1758 miles had a steering issue.Dealer replaced steering gear due to excessive play in sector shaft internally. There was a recall on the pivot bolt. They removed nut and installed lock tight. February I, 2019 steering issue again with 21279 miles. The pitman shaft stud backed out again and lock tite was the"fix" again! Am i going to experience the in another 20,00 miles or crash before then? I think chevy has an issue and needs to be delt with before someone gets hurt.
