A Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says Rain in California Completely Flooded His Truck Bed & Drenched His Tools – He Adds, “This Defeats The Point of Having A Tonneau Cover”

A Cybertruck owner shares his frustration with the truck's tonneau cover. He reports that it recently rained in his area and that the truck bed was drenched. He’s now wondering whether there’s any need for a tonneau cover if it doesn’t stop water.

Armand, a Cybertruck owner from Los Angeles, says his area experienced unusually heavy rain over the past couple of days.

This wasn’t ideal and caused minor flooding and drainage issues in the neighborhood. However, what disappointed him most was the condition of his truck bed, which was supposed to be protected by the tonneau cover.

Despite the tonneau cover, he noticed the bed was flooded, and his tools were drenched.

Armand questions the usefulness of a tonneau cover if it lets water in.

The frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his experience on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.

He writes…

“Tonneau cover leaks

Can the tonneau cover be made waterproof?

We just went through a long, multi-day rainstorm here in Los Angeles, with reports of flooding in some areas.

It even dropped a little hail, and at some point, my backyard was under 2" of water.

A lot of rain fell, so yesterday I did some cleanup. I opened my truck bed, and my tools were inside.

It's always fun to find your tools underwater, and the toolbox is completely submerged.

The moving blanket is also completely drenched. It was all dry when I put them in my truck under a cover.

I mean, this kind of defeats the purpose of the tonneau cover, right?”

Is there a solution?”

Finding all your tools drenched in water is definitely not ideal, and Armand continues to write…

“Everything in my bed was soaked, not moist but drenched.

There were at least 2 gallons of water inside the toolbox, which had a lid and was latched closed.

That means there must have been 100-500 times as much water splashing down on it.

It was tucked all the way up by the glass, away from the tailgate.

A moving blanket, folded and packed near the center of the bed, was completely saturated and dripping wet.

I have never messed with the tonneau cover or the appliqué, and there was no damage to anything around it. Everything was brand new.

The truck was parked in my driveway most of the time, and there were no trees or buildings next to it, just water falling from the sky.

So don't tell me it's a small amount of water. You can't argue with facts.”

Armand appears visibly frustrated with the situation; however, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners defend the all-electric truck, claiming it has the world's most waterproof truck bed.

A fellow Cybertruck owner writes…

“The Cybertruck has the most waterproof pickup bed, but it needs a little help.”

A second Cybertruck owner shares a more balanced view, writing…

“It seems that some Cybertrucks are waterproof, while others are swimming pools.

The people with waterproof tonneaus are oblivious to what others are experiencing. I, too, have a swimming pool.

If I bought another Cybertruck, I'd buy it used and take it through a car wash on a test drive to make sure I didn't get another dud.

The tolerance for errors in tonneau manufacturing is very high at Tesla. Taking an order for a new truck is a very expensive coin toss.”

A third Cybertruck owner, Mo, from Malibu, writes…

“A lot of us have already fixed this issue. There have been extensive posts about it in the past.

The culprit is the seal between the glass roof and the appliqué. It took a few visits to a Tesla service center, but they finally got it on the 3rd attempt.

You really have to spell it out for them and even test it for them in person.

I had a GoPro video in the bed of my truck as I went through a car wash to show them how the leak was coming down, and they addressed it with a new seal. Now my bed is dry.”

Overall, Cybertruck owners appear split on whether the tonneau cover problem is concerning. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
