Keith, a retired truck driver and Cybertruck owner from Long Island, New York, says his Cybertruck stutters and stalls at steady speeds, as if it’s running out of gas.
Keith writes…
“Truck is stuttering at steady speed
It started a while ago, but I thought it was the road because it didn't last long. Now I can't maintain a steady speed without the truck stuttering like it's running out of gas, then starting, stalling, and then starting again—all very quickly.
I sure hope it's the powertrain because my warranty ran out about 4,000 miles ago!”
This is definitely not ideal, and looking at the comments, a lot of Cybertruck owners shared their theories about what might be causing this issue.
Accepting that the stutter is not caused by the Cybertruck running out of gas, the first theory is that maybe the problem is related to the truck’s tires.
The Cybertruck tires are fitted with foam inserts for noise reduction. If this foam separates from the inner walls, it could lead to instability and a rough ride.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, Randy, shared this exact sentiment, writing…
“Have your tires checked. Mine had a foam release that caused it! Replaced under warranty.”
Another Cybertruck owner, Paul from Florida, agreed, writing…
“Foam came loose.”
Below his post, Paul included a picture of his Cybertruck tire, showing a detached black foam piece hanging beside it.
While it's possible the tires are the cause of the issue, fellow Cybertruck owners pushed back on this explanation, citing the nature of the stutter.
A fellow Cybertruck owner from Washington writes…
“This seems like an issue beyond just tires; when the foam loosens, it will cause random shaking. You mention that the truck appears to lose and regain power. Have you tried a hard power-off?”
In response, Keith says he reset his Cybertruck, and the stutter issue stopped. However, a little later, Keith comes back and says the power reset did not work, as the stuttering and stalling seem to have returned.
Mind you, Keith has been on an 11,000-mile cross-country road trip with his Cybertruck, and he is sharing the developments as they happen.
Initially, he writes…
“I tried to reset my Cybertruck while driving, but that didn't fix it. However, I stopped somewhere, reset it with my foot on the brake, and that fixed it. It hasn't happened since. But I'm curious about what the future holds. It was really frustrating to drive like that, especially as I wind down a 5-week road trip.”
Here, Keith appears to have found temporary relief; however, a few minutes later, he returned to say the stuttering is back.
He writes…
“It started doing it again.”
Keith also mentions that he found information indicating that the stuttering and stalling issue might be linked to the battery preconditioning feature on the Cybertruck.
For several years now, whenever a Tesla driver sets a Supercharger station as a destination, the vehicle automatically begins preconditioning the batteries for improved charging performance.
This usually involves heating the battery pack using excess heat generated by the motors and inverters.
Keith writes…
“Grok said people reported a similar issue when the battery heats up to charge. I noticed it when mine was conditioning to charge, but it wasn't immediate — not sure how much longer after it started pre-conditioning, the issue began.”
This is an interesting explanation; however, fellow Cybertruck owners also wanted to know if the stuttering behavior was connected to FSD and whether it was affected by speed.
In response, Keith says that he’s towing a trailer, so he can’t use FSD, but his vehicle stalls and stutters when he’s using adaptive cruise control and driving manually.
He adds that the only time the stuttering stops is when his battery is charged and is not preconditioning.
He writes…
“It seems to be related to preconditioning the battery. It didn't do this when it was charged, but then it started doing it, and I looked over and saw it said 'precondition.' I hope the new update fixes the issue, but I am contacting the service center to inform them ASAP.”
