A Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says His Truck Mistook a Painted Arrow on the Road for an Obstacle and Swerved Dangerously at 72 MPH. He Adds, “Thankfully, I Was Able To Take Over Before Anything Bad Happened”

A Cybertruck owner says he was alarmed when his truck suddenly started swerving to the right while he was driving 72mph on FSD. After the second time the truck did this, he realized it was swerving to avoid a painted white arrow on the road.

Tom Liu, a Tesla Cybertruck owner in the U.S., recently shared a frightening experience involving Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.

While traveling at 72 miles per hour on the highway, his vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly swerved to the right.

What caused this alarming maneuver? A white arrow painted on the pavement, which the vehicle’s vision system mistakenly interpreted as an obstacle.

Thankfully, Liu was paying close attention to the road and intervened just in time, preventing a potential accident.

He said that if he hadn't been so alert, he and his wife could have ended up making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

This is definitely not ideal, and the frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners group on Facebook.

He writes…

“FSD almost drove off the highway at 72 MPH.

Thankfully, I was paying attention to the road and immediately took over. Otherwise, my wife and I would have made the headlines.”

Liu reported that this was the second time during a single trip that the vehicle's vision-based system mistakenly identified a painted road marking as a physical hazard.

He continues to write…

“This happened twice today. As many people pointed out, it seems the car was trying to avoid the white arrow painted on the road.

I reviewed the videos of both incidents, and in both cases, the vehicle was approaching a white arrow on the road.

However, the car was driving at high speed at that time, and the sudden swerve to the right really scared me.”

Below his post, Tom shared a video taken by his Cybertruck’s Sentry camera while driving.

As he explained, the video shows the Cybertruck driving on the freeway, then abruptly veering to the right when it approaches a painted arrow on the road.

This is definitely a scary situation; however, looking at the comments, a lot of Cybertruck owners shared that they, too, have experienced similar issues.

A fellow Cybertruck owner, HT, writes…

"In the morning, my Cybertruck exhibits this behavior. It swerved twice in the span of 200 feet to dodge a cyclist symbol painted on the pavement, yet it won't repeat that behavior later in the day."

Another Cybertruck owner, Karyl Holliday, writes…

“So on I-20 between Augusta and Atlanta, there are a lot of road repairs where they filled in cracks with black tar that looks different from the pavement.

My Cybertruck considers this a 5-mile-long MINE FIELD. It took me a little while to realize what was making it hopscotch around on the freeway.

I ended up having to drive the car myself (Can you imagine?) until the IED threat was gone.”

A third Cybertruck owner, Ron Smith, writes…

“There is a tire burnout on a nearby road, and whenever my Cybertruck gets close, it panics and treats the mark as if there is an actual obstacle in its path.

It unexpectedly slammed on the brakes a few times, both when FSD was engaged and when it wasn't.

Not fun at 6:30 am while holding a coffee.”

A fourth Cybertruck owner, Stephon Griffin, writes…

Had the same thing happen to me when leaves blew in front of my truck while I was in FSD.

Overall, it seems that a lot of Cybertruck owners are experiencing these phantom braking events even with the latest FSD software

This raises serious questions about how close Tesla is to achieving level 5 autonomy and launching a Robotaxi service. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
