Tom Slinger, a Cybertruck owner from Missouri, says his truck starts full-on regenerative braking every time he engages the full self-driving software at highway speeds.
Tom states that his Cybertruck does not automatically maintain the speed he was traveling at. Instead, when he eases off the accelerator pedal to let the FSD software take control, the vehicle automatically activates regenerative braking.
The vehicle only accelerates again and returns to Tom's original speed after slowing down significantly in the middle of the highway.
Tom adds that this behavior is concerning and that he’s practically slamming on the brakes and brake-checking vehicles behind him every time he engages FSD.
The concerned Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Only group on Facebook.
Tom writes…
“When engaging FSD, the truck goes into full regen when I let off the throttle instead of maintaining speed, then it speeds back up.
I am effectively slamming on the brakes and brake-checking people behind me every time I turn FSD on. What am I doing wrong?”
This is certainly concerning; however, Tom is far from the only Cybertruck owner to experience brake issues.
A fellow Cybertruck owner shared last week that his brakes caught on fire following a short drive to the supermarket.
The Cybertruck owner reports smoke coming from his truck’s wheel well, along with orange flames.
However, returning to Tom’s case, looking at the comments, several Cybertruck owners have reported similar behavior in their trucks every time they engage FSD at highway speeds.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, Brian Griesmann, writes…
“My Cybertruck does the same.”
Another Cybertruck owner, Gregory Anton, seconds this sentiment, writing…
“Same thing with my Cybertruck.”
A third Cybertruck owner, Jorge Mario Galeano, says his Cybertruck also applies regenerative braking every time he releases the accelerator pedal.
However, Jorge notes that this behavior is a bug introduced with the recent Cybertruck updates, and previously, the vehicle used to match the driving speed when engaging FSD.
Jorge writes…
“I noticed this behavior since the last two FSD updates. I usually press the accelerator to pick up more speed.”
Speaking about Tesla software updates, a fellow Cybertruck owner reports that his truck hasn’t gone to sleep for three months following a corrupted firmware update.
The owner adds that his truck uses 10% battery even when left sitting in a parking lot.
Going back to the topic at hand, Nathaniel Berry, a fourth Cybertruck owner, says that, similar to the other owners, his regenerative braking activates when he engages FSD.
However, he considers this a safety feature and notes that his Cybertruck only initiates regenerative braking when engaging FSD if there is only a vehicle nearby.
Nathaniel writes…
“Mine does this if I have another vehicle within like 30ft.
Otherwise, it just keeps going perfectly.”
Another Cybertruck owner, Zack LeMire from Texas, seconds the sentiment that the automatic regenerative braking when engaging FSD is a good safety feature.
Zack writes…
“I engage FSD almost at the beginning of every drive, but I’m guessing that it is reacting to the environment around it and giving itself room.”
This is an interesting perspective; however, the original person who started the discussion on this issue, Tom Slinger, disagrees and says the regenerative braking comes on fully and is scary when it happens.
Tom writes…
“The regen is 100%. It’s pretty dangerous to be honest. It will do it even if there’s plenty of space between me and the car in front of me.”
Tom also adds…
“Glad to know I’m not the only one experiencing this. Is there a way to pass this information to Tesla? I know you can report it if you disengage FSD, but I don’t want to disengage the second I engage.”
Overall, looking at the comments, more than 10 Cybertruck owners reported the same issue.
Some Cybertruck owners with multiple Teslas have mentioned that this behavior is specific to the Cybertruck and that they haven’t experienced it with their other Tesla vehicles, such as the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y.

I love using regen on our Ford Mustang Mach-E I rarely touch the brake in normal driving. I love seeing my range stay constant while driving in heavy traffic.

Normal. Tesla may have increased the force - that occurred with the 3 a few months after the initial change. It also seems to be temperature, SoC and conditions dependent.
The driver needs to change the historical behavior of releasing the pedal completely. It can be feathered to provide less regen - just press a little as opposed to not at all.
Once you understand it driving is much nicer. Stop/go is easy. And you save money.

Uninformed and unverified people who don't own the equipment have no business commenting on issues they don't comprehend. FSD makes better decisions than nearly all drivers, particularly the impatient and rude. Quirks ALWAYS occur in hardware. You wouldn't even have a TOASTER if you required the standard of perfection I see being screamed.
Propriety prevents inventive. But it's there.

I'm sorry, did you just imply a 3 ton truck brake checking people at highway speeds is an acceptable issue? I'm all for self driving tech, because you're right, MOST people have no idea what they're doing behind the wheel... But this kind of tech experiencing even a minor issue can be potentially lethal. It needs to be thoroughly tested before widespread release. But Tesla has a history of extremely lackluster quality control. That's the problem here. The reason fewer companies have self driving is because it's bad business to kill your consumers or the people around them.

Why would you switch on regen while you are moving? Are these the same people who attempt to slam a regular 4wd truck into low range while doing 60mph on the freeway? Read the manual b4 you attempt to drive your $100,000 investment.

It feels like at least one and probably several of these guys are still engaging the FSD like this despite it performing dangerous maneuvers. If it's brake checking the highway, WHY would you keep using it before seeing a fix update? And then complaining about not wanting to turn it off to report afyer activating??? Which means when they turned it on and it slammed on the brakes, his first reaction wasnt and apparently never will be to immediately shut down the system causing dangerous situations? I think some people in this world got their license out of a crackerjacks box.

What do you expect? Musk help design it. He may be wealthy but his money doesn't come from his ideas genius or hard work. It came from being in the right place at the right time, selling software that he had little involvement in creating, securing lots of govt contacts and selling products that the govt heavily subsides. Musk and his cyber truck are the perfect example that wealth has no bearing on intelligence. The cyber truck is proof that musk is proof of the opposite, that many wealthy gain wealth by luck. It shows that wealthy can be dramatic failures.

The Cybertruck sucks. It may stop a bullet but it can't do what a real truck can do. I honestly don't understand how it's considered a truck. It's more like a car with a lift kit on it. I had a Chevy Avalanche and loved that truck. But my truck can do way more things than that ugly Cybertruck can do. And I never had to worry about my truck turning on and driving off, being hacked, brake checking people, and so on. Plus my truck looked exactly like a truck. The Cybertruck is a glorified trash can.

Sadly this is NOT specific to cyber truck owners. Our 2026 y does the same thing. The alarm comes up says curvature assist blah blah blah….this in perfect weather and daylight and STRAIGHT roads! They call it phantom braking. And this is a major issue. Worse on models that only have the front cameras and no longer sensors in bumper.
