Which is better, the 3rd-generation Toyota Tacoma or the newly redesigned 4th-generation Tacoma? Which would you choose?
The fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma was introduced for the 2024 model year and is the current generation. The 2024 model year marks a complete redesign of the Tacoma. However, is it better than the previous model?
Gavin Mencinsky (@gavinmencinsky), in a TikTok clip, says he will keep his 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road pickup despite the things he hates about the truck. The good outweighs the bad, he says.
"I'll tell you all the things I hate and all the things I love about my 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road. It's still better than the 4th-generation Tacoma trucks."
Consider Gavin, a Tacoma enthusiast who enjoys customizing his truck. He's added 33-inch SSW Dakar wheels, BFG KO2 tires, a Rough Country lift kit, Diode Dynamic fog lights, and an MBRP Performance exhaust to his 3rd-gen Tacoma, showcasing the potential for personalization.
You don't have to spend a fortune to do it.
Gavin's total spend on these modifications was just under $3,000 for those concerned about the cost, demonstrating that personalization doesn't have to break the bank.
Here is what Gavin says about the likes and dislikes of the 3rd-generation 2020 TRD Off Road.
He says, "Let me start with the things I dislike the most about my truck. First, the Halogen headlights aren't very bright, and I need to upgrade to the new LEDs."
"Next, tire-wise, it's really hard to fit 33s or 35s without rubbing the fender wells really badly.I need to get a body relocation mount and chop even more off the inner fender wells.”
"On the interior, I wish my front seats would go a little further down, because I feel like I'm sitting too high up."
The biggest disappointment
"I'm most disappointed on my Toyota Tacoma with the temperature readout above the knob. I wish I had a screen right there that tells me the temperature of the heat and the AC."
"Another complaint is that my truck isn't very fast. It needs more power. However, it is very reliable, which makes up for the lack of power."
In another video clip, Gavin says, "After getting a fresh tank of gas and driving my truck normally, I can still only get 13 miles a gallon," he states. "How is that possible?"
"All you guys have left comments on how you have the same setup as I do, and you are getting 16 to 20 miles per gallon."
"The very best I can get is 14.3 mpg. It was sitting at 15.5, but that was after driving on the highway. But I haven't driven very far the last three days, so it hasn't improved."
"So, I guess I'm only going to get 13-15 because I have 33-inch tires and a lift on my truck."
Here are the things Gavin loves about his Tacoma.
"The truck looks really good. It has a timeless and unique-looking appearance, and I love the front end, the body lines, the shape, and overall, it's the favorite part of the truck."
"I love the interior because it is super simple. I hate having tons of buttons, and the dash is easy to read with analog gauges. There is only one screen, and the fan, temperature, and setting dials are all easy to reach."
"Now I do like how the stock Tacoma exhaust sounds. Some people say the Tacomas don't sound very good, but with the MBRP exhaust, it sounds pretty good."
"Overall, if you are just getting started with a Tacoma pickup, it's the best truck you can buy hands down for under $35,000. I don't think you can beat this."
Which is best, the 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma or the new 4th generation Tacoma?
The 3rd gen (2016-2023) is known for its reliability and dependability, while the 4th gen (2024-present) offers modern features and a more comfortable driving experience.
The 4th gen has an improved engine, transmission, and updated technology. Ultimately, the best choice depends on whether you prioritize a proven, reliable truck (3rd gen) or a more modern, feature-rich, and comfortable truck (4th gen).
3rd Gen Tacoma (2016-2023):
- Pros: Reliable, dependable, and long-lasting with proper maintenance.
- Cons: Older technology, potentially less comfortable than the 4th gen.
- Key Features: Strong engine and transmission, known for its reliability.
- Considerations: A good choice for those who want a proven, durable truck focusing on reliability and cost.
4th Gen Tacoma (2024-present):
- Pros: Modern features, more comfortable driving experience, improved engine, and transmission.
- Cons: Can be more expensive than the 3rd gen.
- Key Features: New engine and transmission, updated technology, improved comfort.
- Considerations: A good choice for those who prioritize a more modern and comfortable driving experience, with updated technology.
Recommendation:
Buy the 3rd gen if you prioritize reliability, affordability, and a proven track record. The 3rd gen is a strong choice.
Is the 4th-generation Tacoma reliable?
The 4th-generation Toyota Tacoma's reliability is a topic of ongoing discussion and concern among owners and enthusiasts. While some owners are happy with the truck's performance, others have reported issues, particularly with the automatic transmission.
Potential Issues:
- Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including high revs when accelerating and other performance issues.
- Engine Concerns: There are concerns about the new engine's reliability, especially with hard use, compared to the previous generation's V6.
- Quality Control: Some owners have reported quality control issues, such as loose trim pieces or other cosmetic defects.
- "Tuning" Problems: Some owners have mentioned that the truck may rev up too quickly.
Conclusion
The 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma has proven reliability, and the truck is dependable. You know what you are getting.
While the 4th gen Tacoma has shown to be reliable, some owners have experienced issues, particularly with the transmission and potential engine issues. It's recommended that specific model years and trims be researched, and the type of use the truck will be subjected to when making a purchase decision is considered.

I bought my second Tacoma, a 2023, and I'm completely satisfied with it. Any complaints I have are too trivial to matter. I think Toyota made a mistake with the '24 model by limiting engine choices. The turbo will shorten its life.

I bought a new 2021 TRD Pro and it was the poorest performance I have ever driven. And im 5'8 and hit my head getting in at least half the time. Terrible gas mileage, loud cab, the WORST, always jerking, 8 speed trans. I don't think I was in 8th gear but maybe 20% of the time. If you did hit 8th then it shuddered, constantly. I will not have another.
