Outback Wilderness Makes History - The 5 Millionth Subaru Produced In U.S.

Subaru hit a significant milestone in the U.S. as they produce its five millionth vehicle, a 2022 Outback Wilderness.

It was fitting that it was a Geyser Blue 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness that was Subaru of Indiana Automotive's (SIA) five millionth new vehicle that it has produced. Subaru of America announced this week that the automotive facility in Lafayette, Indiana, the only manufacturing plant outside of Japan, reached the milestone in its 35th year.

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the Camden, N.J. automaker's hottest model, and the Outback midsize SUV is the number one selling model for Subaru of America. The Outback Wilderness was new for the 2022 model year and has been a massive success for the automaker.

The 2022 Subaru Outback continues to lead the lineup in sales through the first seven months of 2022, and much of that is due to the Wilderness trim level. SOA has delivered 85,979 Outback models to customers in 2022.

The more rugged Outback Wilderness midsize SUV is made along with the Ascent 3-Row family hauler, Legacy sedan, and Impreza compact sedan and hatchback models in Indiana. SIA says it produces about half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America.

Subaru launched the all-new rugged 2022 Outback Wilderness trim level for outdoor enthusiasts, and it's been a big hit with customers with active lifestyles. The "adventure-friendly" Outback Wilderness is set apart by its go-anywhere attitude. Subaru says customers will wait for the longest to get the new outdoor-themed models.

Why are customers buying the Outback Wilderness?

What sets the Wilderness trim apart from the standard model are 9.5 inches of ground clearance (versus 8.7-inches), an off-road-tuned suspension, Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires, an aluminum engine skid plate, and a steel rear differential skid plate.

The upgrades allow the Wilderness model to trek further and tow more. The 2022 Outback Wilderness will tow up to 3,500 lbs. vs. 2,700 lbs for the Outback with the 2.5-liter engine.

2023 Subaru Outback

For the 2023 Subaru Outback model change, the midsize SUV gets a refresh in the fourth year of its product cycle. The 2023 Outback receives a new front fascia, a more prominent grille, redesigned LED headlights and fog lights, and a more rugged front bumper cover. Subaru says the wheel arch cladding has been updated to improve functionality.

The 2023 Outback also gets the latest version of EyeSight safety technology and a new wide-angle mono camera. Subaru also updated the Outback's multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

What's next for the Outback Wilderness?

The Outback Wilderness remains unchanged for the 2023 model year. Outback Wilderness gets an $800 price increase and starts at $39,670, including destination and delivery fees ($1,175).

A 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness makes history and is Subaru of Indiana Automotive's five millionth new vehicle that it has produced. Production of the newly-upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback and 2023 Outback Wilderness is scheduled to begin this week.
