Tesla Model 3 versus the Model Y
I was researching the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles when I came across this question on the Facebook page of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Owners. Anna Fyodorova also asked both owners which model she should buy.
Like Anna, many buyers are in a dilemma. They're torn between the sleek appearance of the Model 3 and the practicality of the Model Y's storage space.
She asks, "Which one is more suitable for a single woman? Considering that I don't need a lot of storage space and I like the appearance of Model 3 more, should I go with the Model 3, or will I be sorry I didn't go with the storage space in the Model Y? I want to hear your thoughts."
Note: Anna chose the Model 3 because she likes how it looks better. Will she be sorry if she doesn't have the extra storage space of the Model Y?
Even though Anna has made her decision, did she make the right choice?
What Advice Would You Give Model 3 and Model Y Buyers?
Here are a few diverse comments from both Model 3 and Model Y owners, each offering a unique perspective.
Tom Beardy - The Model 3 is more like a sports car - especially if you opt for the Performance. The Model Y is a nice bigger space daily. I went with the new P and would never think about changing.
Shankar Oliyile - I ordered the Model-3 Highland UltraRed after seeing the launch series price of Juniper. I don't want to wait for another year for the standard price of Juniper. I have a small family with a 5-year-old son. We love the Model 3.
Ivy Tran - The Model 3. That's my car, too. No complaints. I love it. I enjoy having it, FSD, sound system, everything about it. It protects you from driving on the way with the best of it!
Kippy Gurr Brunty - I LOVE my Y!
James Nikko - Model Y
Muhammad Kamran - Choose the Model 3 if you want a sporty ride and the Model Y with an SUV feel.
A report from Motor Trend says, "Unless you hate a higher seating position or cannot have a taller vehicle or are on a tight budget, go with the Model Y. It offers almost everything the Model 3 can provide along with more usable space and utility."
"Not to mention, you can lie down in the back to snuggle with the person you like while viewing the sky through the seamless panoramic glass roof. Oh, and don't forget to activate Romance mode. (It's the fireplace logo on the Easter egg tray.) However, for more budget-minded buyers, the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive is still the cheapest Tesla vehicle you can buy."
Performance Package Versus the Standard Model 3 and Y
Let's examine the Performance Upgrade Package (PUP), an option for both the Model 3 and the Model Y.
Features of the PUP
- Brakes: Larger brakes and painted calipers
- Wheels: Larger, staggered 21-inch wheels
- Suspension: Lowered suspension for improved handling
- Spoiler: Rear carbon fiber spoiler
- Headlights: Upgraded Matrix headlights
Other Model Y Performance features a larger battery, more power, a larger rear motor, and revised powertrain software.
Performance and ride:
The Model Y Performance is quick and dynamic, but the large wheels and sport suspensions can make for an uncomfortable ride.
Comparison to Long Range:
The Model Y Performance has several visible differences from the Long Range model, including the larger wheels, upgraded brakes, and lower suspension.
(Note: Tesla acknowledges that the Performance reduces range from 315 to 280 but does not provide revised EPA numbers for this package).
Final Thoughts
For a single woman, a Tesla Model 3 is generally considered the better choice if she prioritizes maneuverability, affordability, and a sporty driving experience. At the same time, a Model Y might be better if she needs more cargo space, a higher ride height, and potentially the option for a third row of seats for occasional passengers.
Key points to consider:
- Space: The Model Y offers significantly more cargo space and a larger interior than the Model 3, making it ideal for hauling larger items or occasionally carrying extra passengers.
- Driving Dynamics: The Model 3 is considered more agile and handles better due to its lower center of gravity and smaller size.
- Price: The Model 3 is generally more affordable than the Model Y.
Who should choose the Model 3:
- A single woman who primarily drives in urban areas and values easy parking.
- Someone who enjoys a sporty driving feel.
- A person on a tighter budget.
Who should choose the Model Y:
- A single woman who frequently transports large items or occasionally carries extra passengers.
- Someone who prefers a higher driving position and better visibility.
- A person who values extra cargo space.

Neither. Tesla electric cars are targets at this time. I own one and would dump it if it didn't cost me $20K to get rid of it.
