Is this happening at any other Kia dealers?
Roderiqua Harris, a 2024 Kia Sorento buyer, shares her experience. She was able to afford a more expensive SUV from the Kia dealer by purchasing insurance that tracked her driving habits. This decision, she says, not only saved her a significant $282 per month but also provided her with a much-needed financial relief.
Can you relate?
Roderiqua (@roderiquaharris), in her TikTok video, humorously remarks that she 'sold her soul' to the Kia dealer to get the State Farm Insurance with the Bluetooth beacon. This decision, she explains, allowed her to save a substantial amount on her insurance, empowering her to make the purchase of her 2024 Kia Sorento.
She says, holding up a Bluetooth beacon with the State Farm logo on it.

"Apparently, I just sold my soul to the Kia dealer because this little buddy called a beacon from State Farm tracks everything that I do. It tracks how fast you drive, how fast you accelerate, how hard you hit your brakes, how fast you turn a corner, and even if you check your phone while you're driving."
"It's connected to Bluetooth and can even tell if I'm distracted by my phone because it's playing music through my phone in my car. I'm not really sure how I feel about it because it's the only way I could afford life and buy my 2024 Kia Sorento."
"So, I didn't really have a choice."
"The dealer told me it's $500 a month for insurance without this beacon buddy, and with it, I pay $218 a month through State Farm," she says, emphasizing the significant savings she was able to make.
"So, if you see me driving 25 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour speed limit, mind your business. Don't get mad at me and honk your horn."
"If you see me turning a corner as slow as a turtle, mind your business, and don't honk at me."
"If you call me while I'm driving my car, I'll have to wait to call you when it's cool. Because I have to use this beacon, or I can't afford the insurance."
What is the State Farm Bluetooth beacon?
The State Farm Bluetooth beacon is a device designed to connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. It automatically tracks your driving data, helping you save money on your auto insurance. It's a key component of the Drive Safe & Save program, where State Farm sends you a beacon to install in your vehicle.
This program can potentially save you a significant amount on your car insurance premiums. However, there's a price you pay.
Here's a detailed breakdown of the State Farm Beacon program:
How it works:
- Installation: The beacon is typically installed in your car, usually behind the rearview mirror.
- Pairing: The beacon pairs with the State Farm app on your phone.
- Data Tracking: The app utilizes the beacon to automatically record trips, including data such as speed, acceleration, braking, and cornering.
- Driving Feedback: The app provides you with feedback on your driving habits, highlighting areas where you can improve.
- Saving Money: By participating in Drive Safe & Save and improving your driving habits, you can potentially earn discounts on your auto insurance premiums.
Are Kia dealers telling buyers they can afford a more expensive car if they get a State Farm beacon?
I couldn't find any information directly linking Kia dealers to telling buyers they can afford a more expensive car because of the State Farm Beacon program.
The State Farm Beacon program is a usage-based insurance program that offers drivers discounts based on their driving habits, such as speed and mileage. Although this program can potentially save drivers money on car insurance, it typically would not influence a car loan approval or affordability assessment by a dealership. Dealers determine a buyer's affordability based on factors like income, credit score, and debt-to-income ratio.
It's important to note that the State Farm Beacon program, while potentially beneficial, should not be the sole factor in determining the affordability of a car. It's crucial to evaluate your personal finances and secure pre-approved financing before visiting a dealership. This will help you understand your budget and make a purchase that you can comfortably afford.
Conclusion:
A Kia salesperson with knowledge of the State Farm program likely recommended Roderiqua look into the State Farm insurance program. Roderiqua decided to buy the insurance so she could purchase the 2024 Kia Sorento.
She says she didn't have a choice because it was the only way she could afford life. It's more likely that her lifestyle is more expensive than her income can afford.
Roderiqua says, "I'm probably going to call it Beacon Johnson or something like that," she says sarcastically.

I have the same beacon. I'm still in my first year, but even though I think I'm a good driver, the analytics say otherwise.
Having to drive beyond safe, to get a good score, to keep the discount - - ridiculous.
I could care less about them knowing where and when I go, but forcing me to drive like an 80 year old I feel is actually more unsafe.
I'll be leaving state Farm soon!

Horribly intrusive app. It doesn't accoint for the type of car you drive. My performance cars brake and accelerate a lot better than my truck but if you do either anywhere near what your vehicle is capable of this app dings you. Drive with traffic in ATL on the interstate and it will ding you. Drive 55 on the interstate through ATL and you are a hazard but State Farm will reward you. This app is an insult to drivers with clean records and rewards dangerously cautious drivers.

It does make it tough on the road especially in rush hour traffic when no one is doing the speed limit.

I work for State Farm. The only way you are saving $280/month on a new policy with the Beacon is if your monthly payment was going to be $2,800. The initial discount is 10%. You can save 30% or more on renewal for sure. But there is a reason I sell insurance and dealers sell cars. That dealer had absolutely no idea how much her insurance was going to be, not by a country mile.

She should have done more research. She can't afford that car. What happens if a child runs in front of her car? Is she going to hit it to keep her insurance low? What if she has to swerve to avoid debris in the road? If she is going to drive under the speed limit to keep her rates low she is increasing her chances of being hit from behind. Whoever let insurance companies get away with this should be fired/voted out. We need our privacy back and the sooner the better.

Why does the title say "Kia Soul" as though she sold a Kia Soul? Maybe it was an attempt at wordplay but it doesn't make sense (she doesn't have a Kia soul or a Kia Soul) so it's more misleading than cute.

At one point she stated that "I didn't have any choice". Yes, you had choices. I agree with the author that maybe this was more car than you could afford. You could have changed insurance companies. You could have bought a used car maybe 5 years or older from CarMax or other places like that. The vehicle would cost way less than buying from a dealership and would cost less to insure a it. When it comes to buying a car there are options. You just need to look for them.

Aww, so sad that you have to drive safer now. I mean who wouldn’t be upset about that except for people who are terrible and unsafe drivers? Cry me a river ho; nobody forced you to get that beacon. It’s people like you that cause ME to have to pay higher premiums because of your unsafe driving, with no fault of my own.

My auto insurance story is…
Permalink
My auto insurance story is that in June of 2020 my son turned 18 years old. He got his learner’s permit in January 2020 right before the pandemic started. My son learned to drive during the summer of the Pandemic thanks to a friend’s father because of extremely few people on the roads day or night. On Christmas Eve 2020 my son took the road test and got his drivers license. In January 2021 my son had me and his father take him an hour and 1/2 drive away from our home to buy a used 2018 Honda Civic with the $5,000 money he saved from working at a fast food restaurant for 2 1/2 years for the down payment. His dad put him on his State Farm auto insurance policy. Then the mailer from State Farm came . My son was automatically put on the drive safe and save program but instead of a tracking beacon my son got paperwork that he had to fill out every month for a year where he had to list all the trips he took in his car with date the time the trip in car started and the time he got to his destination ( usually work or home) and had to turn them the charts at the end of every month to the State Farm insurance agent his father has. The BS is that despite promises that by doing the paperwork for an entire year my son’s father did not ever see a reduction in his monthly insurance policy payments especially when it comes to our son’s portion of the auto insurance policy payment. It wasn’t until our son turned 22 in 2024 that my son’s father saw his monthly auto insurance payment go down but not by much. When our son was added to his father’s State Farm auto insurance policy, my son’s father was paying $375 per month. As of today June 16th 2025 my son’s father’s State Farm auto insurance monthly payment is $282 with $122 of it just my son’s portion of the monthly auto insurance payment. My son’s father was told by the State Farm insurance agent that adding our son’s father qualified him for multi vehicle discount on the monthly insurance payment and as long as our son maintains a good driving record ( no tickets, or accidents ) the monthly insurance payment would go down every year. Both my son’ and his father have maintained great driving records . Yet it wasn’t until 2024 that my son’s father saw any reduction in the monthly car insurance payments from State Farm and going from $375 down to $282 isn’t much of a discount. I believe they are getting ripped off by State Farm just like that lady in the story about the beacon tracking her driving. The only good thing is after only one year my son no longer had to write down all the trips in his car and he doesn’t have a State Farm tracking Beacon in his car. State Farm the “ We promise discounts on good driving records and multi vehicles on one auto insurance policy; but we at State Farm promise that it isn’t discounted every year as promised and if you get a reduction in your monthly auto insurance payments it is at our discretion “ company.

I used one from another insurance provider. These apps are a PITA!!! You can't look at your passenger, even for a second! All the other items in article were monitored. Plus if married or co-owner they have to have app too. So, of both of you are in car, they track on both phones. Then, the person who's riding has to update the tracking data as they weren't driving. If you don't, you get double miles posted to account which could increase your premium! The app I used, tracked phone use even if through Bluetooth in car. Heaven forbid if you look on car screen if you want to answer. And...don't even go 1 MPH over!!

Sorry but I feel this is a fake situation and someone at State Farm marketing is involved. Insurance companies have been pushing these trackers for years and the only ones signing up are those who know they can benefit. For the majority of other drivers, if insurance companies knew most people driving habits, our rates would double.
