The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its 2017 rankings for U.S. models and no other automaker has more Top Safety Pick+ models than does Toyota and Lexus. In total, the brands earned nine TSP+ awards, making Toyota the leading manufacturer of safe vehicle models in America – again.

Only 38 models in the U.S. market have earned this high ranking and Toyota makes almost a quarter of the list. In addition to the nine TSP+ ranked models, Toyota Yaris iA, Toyota Avalon, and the Lexus CT 200h earn the Top Safety Pick designation. Alan Lund, IIHS President, commented on the testing this year by saying “Toyota, along with its Lexus brand, led the way…”

This year, headlight ratings join forward collision prevention with automatic braking as an important factor in earning a top score. Toyota has affordable models with headlights that out-rank models costing twice as much.

One important thing to remember about Toyota when these safety test results are announced is that no other brand does better in the real-world of crashes than does Toyota. Toyota and Lexus also have the most models found to have a zero driver death rate in comprehensive crash reporting based on police reports.
