Toyota Agrees to $3 Billion Tacoma Frame Rot Settlement

Toyota has agreed to settle with owners of the Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia. Guess what owners will get?

News this week of a Toyota settlement with owners of Tacomas, Tundras, and Sequoias with frame corrosion issues, will be good news to anyone nervous about the issue that has not yet been helped by Toyota. However, in an unusual type of legal settlement, Toyota has agreed to do exactly what it had already been doing prior to the litigation. Replace the frames of affected vehicles at no cost to owners.
- Details and owner reports on the Tacoma Frame Issue Here

The problem has been most widespread on the Tacoma. This settlement will mean that owners of 2005-2010 model year Tacomas who discover the frame rot will have their vehicle’s frame replaced at no charge – something Toyota has already been doing for years. Also, if the frame had been replaced, and the owner paid out of pocket for some reason, Toyota will reimburse owners that cost. The settlement includes up to 12 years of inspections and coverage for affected vehicles. In addition to the Tacoma’s, 2005-2008 Sequoias and 2007 and 2008 Tundras are included in the settlement.

Reuters reports that Toyota issued a statement saying “"We want our customers to have a great ownership experience, so we are pleased to resolve this litigation in a way that benefits them and demonstrates that we stand behind the quality and reliability of our vehicles.”

Toyota will also pay legal fees and $2,500 to each of the eight named class action suit representatives that brought the case.

Can someone tell me if rusty parts are put back onto a brand new frame? What the hell? This class-action doesn't specify ALL new parts are added to the frame for FREE?

I had my 07 Taco 4WD in for the leaf spring recall, and they inspected my frame. They told me it would need to be replaced, and gave me a Corolla to drive. Three weeks later, the new frame arrives, and in 3 days the replacement work was finished. Picked it up yesterday, drives like a new truck. The service advisor sent me dozens of pictures of my truck in various states of disassembly, and reassembly throughout the process. A+ experience, all in all.

I payed 13,000 for an 02 Tacoma 3 years ago , while at the car wash last winter I was washing the bottom of the truck and frame , Sadly the pressure from the car wash blew a 6 inch hole completely threw the frame rail just behind the rear wheel . Toyota knew they were sale defected vehicles . I still owe a lot of money to the bank for the truck , I cant even drive it know . I purchased the truck threw a dealership . I don't understand why the U.S. Government hasn't Banded Toyota from saleing death traps to people in America . I have proof of a Death trap setting in my drive way . The frame from front to rear is rotten . Luckily I found this , If I hadn't I would probably been killed out on the high way driving a defective vehicle made by japan MFG .

I own a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 4dr TRD off road edition. I love the truck and it is in such good condition that it gets rave reviews where ever I go. Recently, I heard a strange noise in the rear area of the truck and found out that the frame was very compromised and looked like it was going to collapse. I brought it to a trusted mechanic. he was able to weld pieces of steel in the compromised areas , sprayed the frame and underside and made it like new. The bill was a $1800.00 dollars. Toyota wasn't any help with defraying the costs. Does anyone know of any avenues I can take to try to mitigate some of the money spent? Thanks, John Burke

I have a 2003 Tacoma. Just took it in to have the brake lines replaced and was told/shown the crack in the frame on the rear driver's side. I contacted my local Toyota dealership and they looked up the back information. In 2010 I had it in for recall inspection, they sprayed it with corrosion prevention and that was it. The service manager told me that any recall on the Tacoma's frame had expired in 2018 and so there was nothing they could do about it. So apparently the "corrosion spray" didn't work. I have since contacted Toyota about the issue. We'll see what they have to say.

I have a 2017 Tacoma and I just received a notice re frame rot and it will be replaced OR HAVE " Frame Corrosion Compound ( CRC ) Application. Are they just covering up the rot?
Doesn't the frame rot from the INSDE OUT?
With whom should I speak with this about? Sounds pretty serious to me!!!

I bought a 2006 Toyota Tacoma a year ago with 68.000 miles and a perfect body, never thought of looking under truck at dealership. Big mistake, driving to work my gas tank fell, called a tow truck and took to Toyota dealership. After talking to service guy on phone he tells me frame is rusted and if I continue to drive it I could lose my rear axel. gave me a price of 15,500 dollars . I still owe 9000 on truck and says warranty will not cover. now I will have a 30.000 dollar 2006 Toyota Tacoma.???????

I am the original owner of a 2003 Lexus GX470, 110,000 miles has serious rust issues in the front passenger side despite years of service at the Lexus Dealership. Recently told by the Lexus Service Dept. it's is unsafe to drive.
A mechanic (not Lexus) stated that the frame or undercarriage was probably not undercoated/rust-proofed by the manufacturers. Seeking Legal advice.
