Tacoma, Sequoia, Tundra Owners Take Note: Some Toyotas Lose Extended Frame Replacement Coverage Monday, May 21, 2018

Toyota has a special extended warranty program covering frame rust and rot. Some of the Toyota Tacomas, Sequoias, and Tundras covered by that program will lose coverage on Monday, May 21, 2018. Two business days from now. Here's what you need to know.

About one year ago, Toyota entered into a formal agreement to extend warranty coverage on model year 2004 through 2005 through 2010 model year Tacomas, 2005-2008 Sequoias and 2007 and 2008 Tundras. Tacomas build during these years have proven to have significant rusting and corrosion issues with the frames of the trucks in certain climates. Toyota had been replacing frames on these trucks informally as a goodwill gesture, but on May 21, 2017 Toyota entered into a legal agreement with a class of customers to do the work. Toyota's official name for this is the "Warranty Enhancement Program." Many Tacoma owners just call it the "Frame rot recall."

One of the components of the Warranty Enhancement Program was the following: "The coverage offers the later of 12 years from the Date of First Use (DOFU) or one year from the date of Final Approval. (5/21/2017)." You will note that the expiration for vehicles that have 12 years of use is this coming Monday.

Any owner of a Toyota Tacoma, Sequoias, and Tundras built from 2004 through 2006 (model years 2005 through 2007) should look carefully at this program in the event that they will need it to cover their truck. The best step to take is to take the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for an inspection. At a minimum, e-mail a Toyota dealer if you think you may have any issues to date-stamp and document your request for help.

Torque News has reached out to Toyota to ask for clarification in the event we are mistaken about the dates. We will provide an update as soon as it is available, but we are posting this story now just to be safe.

The Toyota frame rot issue has affected thousands of owners. Torque News has tried to cover every aspect of the problem and has created three stories highlighting one owner's story. The comments under our stories from owners span many pages and run from "Great" to "Horrible" when it comes to how well they feel the program worked.

The Tacoma remains the top-selling vehicle in its class by a wide margin. It set another sales record recently, a reflection of the truck's ability to maintain a solid customer base in light of the quality defects it suffered in the past.

I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra crew cab / I have 102 thousand miles on it and the frame is rotted, I didn't realize how bad it was rotted until I took it to dealership in North Hills, Pa. for something else and the technician showed me how bad it is he said the truck would not pass inspection, the sad thing is I bought it 5 years ago and had 1 payment to go very disappointed in Toyota.

That's what you get for buying a Toyota in the first place. The company has a history of lying. They lied on me sudden acceleration debacle and were sued for billions. Now they're shafting people who bought their trucks in good faith. I hope you all have learned a valuable lesson.

Two weeks ago I discover the frame on my 2009 Tacoma was perforated with a large rust hole. I did not know about the Toyota frame settlement but learned about it in a search online for owners with similar issues. I went to the dealer and was told I missed the deadline by two months for a replacement frame. Called Toyota customer service and got nowhere. Now I’m stuck with a truck I cannot sell and soon will not be able to safely drive.

I have a close friend in Gilford NH that has a 2009 Tacoma 4WD with 76000 miles on it with hole in the frame. He took it the dealer that he bought it from ( in Laconia NH ). They replaced the frame in June this year 2020. They told him his warranty would have expired in June of 2021. They gave him an estimated bill for the parts that he would have to pay for but he told them no, just put the frame in and they put the additional parts on for nothing.

I took my 2009 Tacoma to a dealer in Scranton PA and was told that the frame replacement program has expired. They looked at it anyway and said it would have qualified. I don't how your friend got it replaced, but I would sure like to know how? Thanks.

Welcome to the club. They, Toyota, swear they sent out notices. When I asked for proof they were unable to give me any. They said they’re not responsible for what happens in the mail. Now we’re in the same sinking boat.

Bought my 2006 Tundra used in Feb 2018. Power Steering Gear broke this past weekend and I brought it in. They had to tell me the really bad news that my frame was rotted with a hole in it and they won't touch it. I read about recalls for all these other years and models and clearly there is still an issue here. If there is another class action suite i'm listening.

Yea, I got rid of my truck because it wouldn’t pass inspection. Just like Toyota. Too little too late.

I have a 2006 Tundra that I purchased from a Toyota dealer back in 2016. It's been really good to me so far. Had to replace front wheel bearing and other suspension stuff, and that's when I noticed two big holes on the frame, underneath the engine. I was in shock. I called Toyota dealer, they looked at it and they told me yes it's corroded but the program has expired and my truck didn't qualify for it anyways. The reason for that was because the dealer I bought it from had allied the CRC which by the way I was never informed of it, and that the CRC warranty expired a year later after they had allied it. I'm going to get legal information to see if there is something that can be done for Toyota to fix the problem, it's their responsibility, that's how I see it.

Hello we have a 2004 Toyota Sequoya and our frame is rusted as well and when driving it it swings like a boat. We're the second owners of the vehicle, motor and transmission run good but on the freeway running it over 60 MPH shakes and it's scarry.

Have you checked the alignment and balance on the wheels? Shaking and swirling maybe due to those issues. Of course, if the frame rusted very badly, then everything may just be swirling around and alignment wouldn't hold anyways. But if there are no big holes and wheels sit tight, then the frame might not be the issue.

Never receieved info on a frame replacement program. So disappointed. Very bad news for my family to discover this rust during a brake job this week. I am trying to communicate with toyota and the attorneys who filed the last lawsuit Warner vs. Toyota. Eager to hear from anyone who got any satisfactory resolution to this problem. We purchased the car new in 2007 and have lived at same address all along, receive other recall notices without issue. 781-258-1025

I bought my 2003 from a dealer in Ohio. About 7-8 years ago. Had to get an exhaust put on and the tech noticed a lot of rust on the frame. Told me to have it checked out at Toyota. Called corporate and they said to have it inspected at the dealers. They said multiple rust perforations in the front half of the frame, Recommended not driving it. Handed me the keys and away I went. They fixed my airbag as to the concern of safety why did they not fix my frame. called corporate nothing they can do I have a 2005 Avalon and drive it through the same area and not any rust on the frame . Great car.So why is the truck rusting away and why is not toyota held responsible for this disaster.

Wanting to add to the post I previously made on my 2003 tundra. I had it in at the same dealer in 2015 they replaced a cross member in the back half of the truck and sprayed the area around the spare tire. Told me it was looking good. How can frame rust in 5 years and get as bad as they would recommend not driving the truck? I think I am not going to buy a Toyota again. They lied to me and refused to fix my truck.

I have a 2004 Sequoia so i was never alerted to the frame rust. I was just told yesterday by a mechanic that my entire wheel well is rusted and unsafe to drive. Ugh. Am I too late to the game for toyota to do anything? I am just trying to get thru the summer with this car but now is deemed unsafe to drive. Any advice?

I have a 2007 Tacoma that my son inherited from his grandfather last year. 83,000 miles and the spring perch is nearly rotted completely off. The truck looks almost new inside and out, but this has soured me to toyota. I was quite dismissively told that the program expired in 2019 and hung up on.
