Testing tires is easy and also hard. We know a good tire when we drive on one, but conveying the feelings and impressions is sometimes a challenge. Case in point, the new Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires we have installed on our 2023 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands test vehicle.
Our initial test report of the Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires can be found here. Inside, you will find information such as specs, tread depth, pricing, and our dry and wet impressions. We also have some big news on noise in that first report.
We had a couple of inches of snow this week, and we headed out before the plows could remove it from the frozen asphalt. The most obvious difference between the all-terrain tires and the winter tires is that the winter tires simply don’t slip - at all. The all terrains were acceptable and predictable, but they would break loose in certain situations. Without further ado, here is our initial snow test. More to come soon, if Mother Nature cooperates.
Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV - Snow Grip - Flat Surfaces, Turning
On flat snow-covered pavement, the Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires were remarkably grippy. We could not make them slide and still be safe on the road. It would have been similar to making the Bronco Sport slide on dry pavement.
Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV - Stopping On Snow
Like with turning, the Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires stopped us so effectively we can’t even really say that the snow made any difference. These tires stopped on snow like they were stopping on wet pavement. No slip. No drama.
Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV - Hill Start On Snow
We thought for sure we could get the Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires to break loose on the steep hill of our driveway. We did everything wrong. We crept up the hill halfway. Stopped. Then stomped on the gas. Again, zero slip. The Bronco Sport lurched ahead like it was on dry pavement in summer. Weird.
Please understand that we realize this story is sort of a “non-story.” But we must report our findings, even when they are pretty simple. Our plan is to get the Bronco Sport north to New Hampshire this weekend to look for deeper snow and definitely ice. Watch for a new update shortly, and thank you for reading our updates.
Do you use Michelin X-ICE Snow SUV tires on your vehicle? If so, please drop us a comment and tell us what you think of them. Your first-hand impressions may help inform a fellow buyer's purchase decision.
Test Note: The tires used in this test were provided by Michelin. The author paid for mounting and balancing.

We have been using them on a 5th gen 4runner for a coupleofyears, we've been driving in the mountains a few times when it's snowing, and feel they're a great winter tires.

I am going into my 4th winter with these X-ICE installed on my 2019 VW Alltrack (AWD) in Boise.
Night and day difference when driving in snow and ice when compared to Continental All Season OEM tires. I have made multiple mid winter trips driving the I80 over Donners Pass while under chain control, you can drive with confidence - and that is without the hassle of dealing with chains.
No other option when it's time to replace in my opinion

I live near Toronto and drive a Lexus gx 460 and replaced Bridgestone Blizzack winter tires with the above Michelin x ice tires. While subjectively it seems like the Michelins are not quite as good in deep snow, I got the Michelins because of their better ratings in slush and ice which global warming seems to have created a lot in our modern winters. I enjoy the confidence I feel with the Michelins when I know the roads are slippery.

I just had Michelin X Ice Snow installed on my BMW 5 Series RWD. Not only everything you say is true, but no more road noise than the summer tires. Worth every penny.

I used X-Ice Snows on my last vehicle, '13 FWD Ford Escape, here in Nova Scotia, and found them very good in slush, packed snow, and ice; better even than the previous X-Ice. Last winter I installed X-Ice Snows on my current '18 AWD Edge, and never once felt a slip or spin all winter.

I hate them on my FWD Hyundai Venue in icy Calgary.
They are so quiet that instead of hearing tire and pavement noise, instead I now hear my engine and wind noise.
Oh yes, sure they are amazing in snow and on ice on my FWD car.
No need for oversold AWD.
Great report,
Bill

I bought brand new Michelin X-Ice tires last year and right from the start I did not like them, the “name” sold me on them but I am greatly disappointed. Not a winter tire that I would recommend, I don’t understand after reading some reviews plus as I stated the brand, the tires disappoint.

Just installed a set on a Prius and have been pleased with them so far. I came upon multiple vehicles stuck on an icy uphill highway grade and was not just able to preserve my momentum but actually accelerate. I have managed to set off the ABS and stability control with them on a few times but the threshold at which they break loose is pretty high. Fun fact for any Canadians reading this comment: they're manufactured in Pictou Co. Nova Scotia.

I have the Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV tires on my 2023 Ioniq 5 AWD. They have only broken loose once after 2+ winters. That was during a Saskatchewan winter storm on the Trans Canada highway. Very impressive.

I've used x-ice for years with amazing result. On a subaru forester it was unstoppable. Driving up a steep access road with more than a foot of snow it would never get stuck. There would be slipping bit it kept going. I was so impressed. Also inder very bad driving conditions it would keep me safe while others were sliding off the road. Highly recommended.

I was NOT a fan of the previous Michelin x-ice. This winter I found myself proposed with a deal too good to refuse on the new X-Ice Snow. Note: I drive a rear wheel drive v8 Chrysler 300c in Canada. Winter is a big deal. These tires are fantastic! Michelin has very much redeemed themselves. I have to WORK to get the rear end to slide out, and braking is as if I'm on wet pavement. Very very good, compared to the previous generation of their tire that was great on ice, but trash in deep snow. Previous generation of Michelin X-Ice lasted about 3 weeks on my car before I peeled them off got rid of them and slapped on instead of toyos, which were also fantastic with all of the emphasis applied. Throughout the years I've run Nokian, Yokohama, toyo, and briefly Michelin, as well as Hankook winter tires. These michelins are definitely top shelf I'm very impressed and highly recommend them.

I installed a set of x-ice's on my Mazda. It's not the SUV version but the car variant. I live in Ottawa, Canada. It's cold, and we get plenty of snow.
My impression? They grip extremely well. I can only break them loose under aggressive turn in combined with braking through heavy snow/slush build up. Over ice, they're exceptional. Best set of winter tires I've ever had. This is strong praise coming from a Canadian! We know winter driving. And a bonus? They're nearly as quiet as my all seasons that came with the car.
If you need snow tires, but the x-ice. You absolutely will not be disappointed.
