Reviving the Heartbeat of a Lexus CT200h: A Hybrid Battery Success Story

Revived a Lexus CT200h hybrid battery from 30% to 96.95% life. Saved thousands and boosted MPG.

In the modern automotive world, hybrid technology is increasingly taking center stage. As these vehicles age, the life of their hybrid batteries dwindles, often resulting in expensive replacement costs. Recently, I took on the challenge of repairing a Lexus CT200h (same as a Toyota Prius) hybrid battery with a mere 30% life left and rejuvenating it to a staggering 96.95% life. Here's how.

The Journey Begins: Tools and Testing

I initiated my mission using the Hybrid Automotive battery equipment - consisting of the Prolong charger, Prolong discharger, and Prolong module tester- complemented by my trusty Fluke 88-V digital multimeter.

Prolong battery reconditioning equipment

Before I tore into the battery to replace anything, I used Dr. Prius to assess the battery's condition and see what trouble codes were.

After discovering the famous P0A80 trouble code accompanied by multiple module blocks that had become "weak," I knew what to do.

My first task was to assess each module. Understanding its internal resistance value, overall capacity, state of health, and age was vital. By determining these parameters, I could segregate the modules into "good" and "not-so-good."

The trick was in the assembly. Modules with the lowest resistance values were placed at the heart of the battery setup, and the arrangement radiated outward from there. This strategic placement ensured the battery pack's most efficient operation and longevity.

A Cycle of Rejuvenation: Charging and Discharging

Once the modules were strategically positioned, the Prolong charger took over. I embarked on the first charging and balancing cycle. This was followed by the maiden discharge cycle, ensuring the optimal health and performance of the battery modules.

This process was diligently repeated: three discharge cycles and four charge and balance cycles, to be precise. Upon completion, it was time to reinstall the battery and hit the road for a test drive.

The Real-World Test: Hitting the Road

I reinstalled the revitalized battery into the Lexus and hit the road. After a few days of driving, allowing the battery to fully "break-in," a second Dr. Prius test was performed. The results were beyond impressive. From a measly 30%, the battery boasted a new lease on life at 96.95%.

If one were to compare this against the dealer's quote of $ 4,000 for a battery replacement, the savings are undeniable. Even if I had to purchase all the equipment from scratch, the savings would have been over $2300. For anyone considering the Prolong equipment purchase, it's worth every cent, especially when dealing with premium brands like Lexus, whose price tag includes a luxury markup.

The Results: Improved Performance and Efficiency

Beyond the monetary, the gains were tangible on the road, too. My Lexus CT200h surged from an average of 38 mpg to an impressive 46 mpg – an 8 mpg ascent. The overall performance felt sprightlier, more responsive, and smoother.

If your hybrid battery lags, take your time with a costly replacement. Rejuvenation is possible With time, patience, and the right tools. One essential pointer for those looking to emulate this process - if you are changing out modules, always remember to balance the battery. Without this step, you'll be in a continuous loop of replacements. Reconditioning and balancing are pivotal to achieving the remarkable results I experienced.

In this era of sustainable living, such an approach saves money. It embodies the true spirit of hybrid technology: a fusion of efficiency, economy, and environmental consciousness.

Hi there, I think it is amazing you were able to do this. If you don't mind could you please answer a couple questions for me:
Where were you able to find the items you used to fix the battery?
How long did it take?
How heavy is the battery?
Is it relatively safe and easy to do?

Thank you so much and kudos to you!
