Ford Recalls 2023 Bronco Sports To Fix ABS Module Issue

With Ford announcing a major recall earlier this week and a second one involving its popular Bronco Sport model, the automaker is setting an early pace to possibly lead the number of recalls for 2023. It is still very early, yet the automaker has two recalls, and it isn't even February.

A few weeks ago, one of the online auto information sites noted that in 2022 the leading automaker in terms of recalls was Ford. Indeed, it pointed out that Ford had taken first place by a substantial margin.

Well, Ford could be off to another recall-leading year if trends hold. Already, the automaker has posted at least two recalls, including one that Torque News has already commented on Ford recalls 462,000 vehicles for rear video issues.

Today, Ford has announced the recall of its small retro SUV, the Bronco Sport, for an important problem, the ABS module. The ABS module is the module that controls the anti-lock braking system. The ABS system is also important in several of the automaker’s automatic safety systems.

According to paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a leak inside the ABS module can cause an unexpected increase in brake pedal travel or unexpected movement during an Auto Hold event, increasing the risk of a crash.

The federal safety agency noted that in certain 2023 Bronco Sport vehicles, the valves inside the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) module might have been damaged during manufacturing, causing an internal ABS module leak.

Ford expects to begin contacting owners of the vehicles involved on Feb. 15, 2023. Once an owner has received the notification letter, the owner can then schedule a free repair. The repair consists of the replacement of the ABS module.

For more information, owners can contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. The Ford identification number of this recall is 23S01. Or, owners can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit the agency website at www.nhtsa.gov. The NHTSA identification number of this recall is 23V021.

Marc Stern has been an automotive writer since 1971 when an otherwise normal news editor said, "You're our new car editor," and dumped about 27 pounds of auto stuff on my desk. I was in heaven as I have been a gearhead from my early days. As a teen, I spent the usual number of misspent hours hanging out at gas stations (a big thing in my youth) and working on cars. From there on, it was a straight line to my first column for the paper "You Auto Know," an enterprise I handled faithfully for 32 years. Not many people know that I also handled computer documentation for a good part of my earnings while writing YAN. My best writing, though, was always in cars. My work has appeared in Popular Mechanics, Mechanix Illustrated, AutoWeek, SuperStock, Trailer Life, Old Cars Weekly, Special Interest Autos, etc. You can follow me on: Twitter or Facebook.
