Ram Trying to Fix Continuous Uconnect Reboot Problem in 2018 Rams

2018 Ram 1500 truck owners started noticing the problem on February 13, 2018. A new over-the-air update made their Uconnect systems go haywire, continuously trying to reboot every minute or so.

Mac, from Massachusetts, first reported the problem with his 2018 Ram 1500 on a Ram forum February 13, 2018. Mac wrote “On my way to work this morning the radio turned off and the Uconnect screen went black. After about 30 seconds or less it started to boot up again. It came back fine but after about a minute of working correctly it started to repeat this process and did so for the next 20 minutes until I shut the truck off at work. I'll check it again at noon time since I have a medical appointment, but has anyone heard of this happening before? This is on a 2018 Tungsten Limited with 2973 miles on it. The update was completed without any issues about a month ago, so it has nothing to do with any type of update taking place. Sounds like a service call is in order but I thought I'd check to see if anyone has had this happen before and what the outcome was. Thanks.”

Other owners quickly answered that they were experiencing similar issues. Mazak, also from Massachusetts, posted “My Uconnect screen just started rebooting itself yesterday around 4pm. and today it continues to do the same thing. My boss just came and told me that several people he knows just started having the same problem with their Uconnect system. Dealer says Chrysler is working on a fix.”

Widespread Rebooting Problems Reported

Apparently the Uconnect problems were reported on the 2018 Chrysler, Dodge and Ram products that use the Uconnect system.

Mac was able to get through to Mopar support and then posted, “Just chatted with the Mopar Owners website and this is what they told me: We are currently aware of an issue causing the radios to restart repeatedly. At the moment we are working on a resolution to this concern however as of right now there is not. The concern did start on Friday and engineers have been contacted. At this time we are able to create a case here for you in regards to this issue and we are advising our customer to contact us back in a couple business days in regards to a solution. We are working as quickly as possible to get this resolved and we do apologize for the inconvenience. They can't say for certain but they think the fix will come across the vehicle automatically. You may want to chat with someone on the site and let them know you're having this problem. She said that since I have a case opened they'll contact me about the solution.”

Chris, from Connecticut, added, “It seems there was an over the air update that caused this last Friday. Affecting only the 2018 models since they have the newer head units (by Panasonic).”

Chrysler sent Mac this message on Valentine’s Day. “Regarding customers experiencing repeated system rebooting: We have identified that the concern is related to SiriusXM Travel Link services. In the next 48 hours we’ll temporarily suspend the Travel Link feature in order to cease the reboot. We appreciate your patience.”

Concerns about Fixing the Glitch

Some 2018 Ram 1500 owners wondered if they would have trouble receiving the message that would fix the problem because their radios wouldn’t stay on long enough to download it.

Mac checked in with great news this morning. “I drove 35 minutes to work this morning and not one reboot took place. So it appears to be fixed on my truck. It's odd that I haven't seen any messages about the fix being rolled out yet. I couldn't go for more than a minute without the reboot taking place prior to this morning. I hope it continues to work. I also checked the "Travel Link" and it seemed to be working and wasn't turned off. Hoping for the best!”

And later Mac posted this, “I received confirmation that the fix started going out yesterday.”

It is unclear how quickly all of the vehicle owners will receive the fix for their Uconnect systems. Apparently the problem may have been on the Sirius side of the programming equation. It makes sense that if Chrysler, Dodge, Ram can force the update without the vehicle being on, the companies should also be able to update and fix the problem without the radio system being on.

Mine was fixed with first radio replacement but it took three months of the dealer doing everything else first and make them replace your battery it’s toast also. I hear the radio off the shelf is old version with same issue new software fries it must be new release not old stock on shelf

I just dropped off my 2013 Ram Laramie Longhorn this morning after first contacting Uconnect tech department over the last few weeks. Apparently the updates to the Uconnect system are sent out randomly over the years. If the radio does not register each “bridge” update, only the dealer can coordinate the latest map updates.
I bought the GPS upgrade thumb drive from Uconnect for $150 and have a contact person, John, working with the dealership to upgrade the GPS if the dealership tech guys need help. I’ll post the results as I get them over the next few days.
*if you go to “settings” on your Navigation options, you can see the readout telling you which is the latest update signal you’ve received. Buying the new map update from Uconnect enables you to install it with your own MacBook, but you’ll need to be fairly tech savvy.
My Uconnect contact is John at (800) 826-6632. Ext 302-0733. John has consistently returned calls and will also talk owners through the update process.

My 2019 ram limited truck has been in the shop for a month for the radio and still haven't fixed it yet im being told that Chrysler hasn't yet got a fix for it i need a new radio for the truck

I’ve gotten resistance from the dealerships so I went directly to Mopar Warranty Dept to get my new radio.
You may get bounced around a bit but try the Ram Care Dept at (866) 726-4636.
They will set up a case # for you and should resolve the issue within a few days.
Unfortunately, I had to call every day and be relentless to get results.

I have a 2018 Ram 2500 sport, $70000.00 + pickup that I love but am begin to hate, between the recalls with no parts to fix it without waiting way to long and now I don't even have my pickup. Took it to the dealership Friday 13th because I could't get anything on Uconnect to work, called uconnect they had me try a couple things and it kept coming up on the screen "Vehicle Radio Needs Service" took it in they said it needed an update will take about an hour, an hour and a half later they told me the radio would't take an update I needed a new radio that I could't take mine home because all it;s doing now is draining the battery, will have one in a week, then it was by the 25th, now it's "we don't know"??? Really, 8500 miles on it, Two years old and I was not only sold a vehicle that they knew they had a problem with but can;t fix it while I'm still making payments on!!!! they gave me a loner which is nothing but a gas eater, put 60 miles on it and have already gone though almost a Quarter tank, I can;t afford to drive but they did give me a vehicle at least. I want mine !!! How you can keep selling something knowing you have a problem is beyond me, even the dealership tells me they are still getting NEW VEHICLES in that are having the same problem !!!!

Just purchased a used 2018 Ram 2500 Tungsten Edition and I started noticing that the radio presets keeps on losing its memory... Only after it does a reboot for no apparent reason... I did bring it to the dealer And they said that there was an update to be done on the truck..fine got that done.. and there was no charge... Three weeks later here we are and it did the same thing.

Plus there's another glitch I noticed... on highway with cruise on not to tu h break pedal I use the plus and minus buttons on steering wheel. When i would push on the minus to reduce no problem But when i would hit to RESume...to speed up.. It would not speed up!! I need to shut off Cruise Control and start over..
ANY COMMENTS ON BOTH ISSUES please!

My problem just started in my 2015 Laramie , last week was my first time , i thought it was Sirius Radio , so i got them to do a reboot , and all was well for about an hour , then it happened again . Started the truck , Sirius came on then it shut down 10 seconds later , rebooted then shut down , this was even with Sirius off and just F.M. radio on .I had no control with value, or just turning it off. no matter what , this went on the whole time i was driving , for an hour plus. I couldn't stop the on off situation for like and return trip for an hour .

Have a 2018 ram 1500 . Bought it new Feb 2018. Radio was replaced because screen was separating and I could not do anything on it. With in the 1st week the new radio started going black and rebooting . Took it back to the dealer and they could not figure it out and sent me on my way. Radio still keeps rebooting . This is really disappointing for what I paid for the truck. Can’t trade it without loosing out on a lot of money. Hope it can be fixed. It just been one thing after another . Wish I would have gone with my gut and got another Toyota .

2019 Ram 1500, just got message to update today, how stupid I was to hit ok, for some reason I did not consider that radio sw/fw writers would be so horrible at it. Anyways, truck is now stuck on error code 20 for the U Can't Connect system.

FEH! #$%^$&%$#

July 2021, I experiencing the same issue righ now on my ram1500 2018. My dealer (small dealership) have about a douzen of radios in order to replace deffectve units on different customers - waiting time well over a month. The dealer do not know if the problem is or will be resolved anytime soon. As far as I am concerned, having no back up camera or sensors audible alert is a safety issue on a pick-up truck. This is my last last Ram (my favorite pick-up brand) - I'm shopping for a 2021/2022 F150 - I suggest you all do the same. Chryler don't take ownership of the issue.

Have a 2018 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel Laramie. Bought the truck as 2nd owner and have had a problem of the Uconnect radio doing whatever it wants to do whenever it wants since buying it but was only once or twice every 6 months or so. Initially, shutting the truck off and restarting would fix the issue. Now there seems to be nothing I can do. I drive an average of 4 or 5 hours a day and can't listen to the radio because the radio changes the channel on its own and consistently ask if I want to update my clock settings. Have been told that my truck is no longer under warranty and I have to pay for itself. This appears to be common problems and there does not seem to be a fix. Not a happy customer!!

My 2018 RAM has been changing radio stations by itself, changing from Sirius to AM/FM by itself, the heated seats come on by themselves, the air conditioned seats come on by themselves, the heated stirring wheel comes on by itself, sometimes the screen locks up and will not work at all, GPS will not work9 keeps searching ), a message " Do You Want To Adjust Your Clock " keeps popping up, I was on the phone with Sirius for over two hours going through a sequence with them, they sent a new signal, still didn't work. Sirius said " I would need to take truck to dealer and have them peform a " HARD REBOOT ". Just left the dealer...THEY SAID I NEED A NEW RADIO ( $1,700.00), or I could get a re-manufactured radio for $835,00 plus labor $65.00 to swap them out. Thia vehicle is a 2018 Dodge RAM, Laramie 1500 with 58,000 miles on it. this the first thing I did after leaving the dealer. They said a "HARD REBOOT" would not fix the problem.

2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn. Radio/Navigational and all buttons flicker back and forth.
Worse is the system will call people as well as 911 on its own.
Battery has gone dead last night when system put on dome light.
This will cause an injury if it hasn’t already.

Ram hasn't fixed anything. Their customer service is horrendous on a good day.
I purchased my 2022 Ram 3500 in Sept 2021. It has had the Ram UConnect radio station preset issue since purchase. It has been to the dealer 4 times with zero positive results but my frustration level has increased! That's a positive - right? All I hear from Ram is "The engineers are working on it and the next software update will correct the issue." Seems to me they need new engineers. I just got off the phone with Ram Cares (talk about an oxymoron!) and they literally said "A software update is coming the first quarter of 2023 that should fix it. Nothing else we can do." Everyone needs to report this issue and start wearing out Ram Cares and dealerships. I'm starting my 16th month of dealing with this serious lack of a sense of urgency to address this issue. Might be time to get rid of this thing and go GM product. All because of a radio...or is it lack of customer service? If they can't fix a radio, what if it's something really serious?
