The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has confirmed that it is investigating complaints about some of General Motors’ most popular and most profitable vehicles. The investigation is looking into 877,710 GM vehicles equipped with L87 V8 engines. The vehicles being investigated are: 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500; 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe; 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban; 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500; 2021-2024 GMC Yukon; 2021-2024 GMC Yukon XL; 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade; and 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV. If a problem is confirmed the recall could be huge.
What the Owners are Saying
According to the Associated Press, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 39 complaints about the vehicles with the V-8 engines saying that the engines can seize up without warning.
NHTSA said owners reported "no detectability prior to the engine failure." Engine failure can lead to an increased risk of a crash resulting in injury and/or property damage. A bearing failure can cause the engine to seize, or a bearing failure can cause a connecting rod to even breach the engine block. The V-8 is one of GM’s most popular engines. Buyers often ask to purchase the larger, more powerful power plant.
What Happens Next
NHTSA will start interviewing the 39 vehicle owners who have filed complaints. It will also ask GM for service and warranty records about whether owners have had work done because of the problem. If a recall is issued, all owners who already have had the problem fixed will be reimbursed for the maintenance costs. The AP report does not indicate if there have been any accidents or injuries reported because of the possible problem. It is not clear how long the investigation will take.
General Motors was the U.S. leader in 2024 auto sales, posting a 4.3% increase in sales for the year, its best performance since 2019. Its Silverado pickup truck was the second-best selling vehicle in the U.S. last year. The Cadillac Escalade is the best-selling luxury SUV and the Chevrolet Tahoes and GMC Yukons are all top sellers.

I am yet to hear a 5 .7 L that doesn't have an exhaust manifold leak. Going back 25 years .Doesn't matter if they are old or new around 20k miles and tic tic tic is what you hear at idle. I wouldn't have one.
