Chevrolet confirmed speculation that a more affordable version of the Chevrolet Corvette was on its way, with a surprise debut at the Sebring Race Track this weekend. Racing legend Roger Penske was on hand to highlight the existence of the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. This C8 Grand Sport version will make the sports car more attainable for Corvette lovers who want performance and comfort all in one package.

2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

The Corvette hasn’t featured a Grand Sport model for the last few years, while it concentrated on perfecting the high-performance ZR1s and ZR1Xs. The Grand
Sport is known for bringing the best of the Stingray and high-performance models together in one package. The Grand Sport is considered to be one of the few Corvettes that are daily drivers.

Chevrolet is releasing few details until the Grand Sport’s official unveiling on March 26th. We do know that the new model will be powered by the next-generation GM small block V8. GM recently celebrated the importance of its small block V8s. Last year the company invested hundreds of millions of dollars into the latest V8 technology. The Grand Sport is expected to feature the 6.7L LS6 V8 engine.

The photos show huge Brembo brakes and the red racing stripes are clearly visible on rear fenders rather than front fenders.

Roger Penske at Corvette Grand Sport Debut

Why Roger Penske is Featured at the Sebring Debut

Before Roger Penske became a legendary race-team owner, he was a race car driver. On March 21, 1964, Penske and racing legend Jim Hall took the checkered flag at the Twelve Hours of Sebring, securing a Prototype GT class victory in their Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport.

This year, Penske, a longtime collaborator with General Motors and Chevrolet, celebrates his 60th year as a team owner and served as Grand Marshall for the 74th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring IMSA race as part of those celebrations. Chevrolet decided that the Sebring race, held at a venue that played a key role in the development of the original Grand Sport, offered a perfect opportunity to bring together the Grand Sport lineage, and the newest Grand Sport.

“It is an incredible opportunity to be reunited with the Corvette Grand Sport C2 here at the Twelve Hours of Sebring – an event and a track that has always carried special meaning for me and for our race teams over the years,” Penske said. “Congratulations to Chevrolet on launching the new era of the Grand Sport program. It is truly special to see the C2 and the other generations of the Corvette Grand Sport, including the new C8, here at Sebring.”

The Grand Sport was originally a pure race car under the leadership of legendary Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. The C2 Grand Sport was a lightweight purpose-built race car. Chevrolet only built five. Other Grand Sports followed but none in the last seven years. Fans have been hoping for a C8 Grand Sport.

“It’s incredible to think that 62 years ago, Jim Hall and I drove the Corvette Grand Sport to a class victory at the Twelve Hours of Sebring,” Penske said. “I have great memories of driving the Grand Sport as we were fortunate to earn three wins across five races in the car during the 1963 and 1964 seasons".

Chevrolet Introduces 2027 Corvette Grand Sport at Sebring

Chevrolet says “The latest Corvette Grand Sport is for the purist and will be a high-volume model. Featuring the next generation of GM V8 technology, the C8 Grand Sport is built by and for enthusiasts.”

The fact that the Grand Sport will be a high-volume model will help keep the price lower than the ZR1 models. Relatively few of the ZR1s are being hand-built. The demand for the high-horsepower performance models is keeping the prices high, with some dealers being caught charging huge premiums for the exclusive models.

The ZR1 does 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, which makes it the quickest Corvette ever. Chevrolet’s halo car has 1,064 horsepower and recently reached a top speed of 233 miles per hour during testing in Europe. Now, Chevrolet confirms that the Corvette ZR1 equipped with the ZTK Performance Package can reach new records, running the quarter mile in 9.6 seconds. Based on these figures, no current production car under $1 million rivals the ZR1. Chevrolet says the ZR1 should sell for around $200,000, but most have been bought by collectors and prices have been much higher.

If Chevrolet can produce a more affordable Corvette, it will be a huge seller. Chevrolet is promising more details this week, and we’ll have them for you here.
