General Motors is recalling more than 62,000 2019-2024 Silverado Medium Duty trucks because of a potential fire risk. The 4500/5500/6500 trucks are not the typical Silverados you see, they are the larger chassis cab trucks. Owners are being told to park them outside because the fires can start when the trucks are off and unattended. According to paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles were recalled previously for a similar but different issue. I wrote about the recall back then and you can read about that issue, here.
What is Causing the Fire Risk
According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, General Motors has decided there is a defect in the vehicles brake assembly. The defect involves the 2019 – 2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD/5500HD/6500HD vehicles.
“These vehicles may have a brake pressure sensor assembly that may allow brake fluid to leak beyond the diaphragm seal into the brake pressure switch. The brake fluid may seep into the sensor assembly’s electrical components and short the brake pressure switch and the associated fuse. If brake fluid shorts the brake pressure switch and the associated fuse, the circuit can generate excessive heat that could result in a fire, increasing the risk of injury. An underhood fire may occur when the vehicle is off and possibly unattended.”
Description of the cause:
An unauthorized chemical was used by the supplier in the manufacture of a rubber diaphragm in the brake pressure sensor assembly, which can cause the diaphragm to degrade over time.
The only warning that a driver may see is that a “service brake system” malfunction indicator lamp may light up.
NHTSA says this recall is related to NHTSA recall 23V266. During that recall, GM found another issue that caused a similar fire risk. GM says no accidents or injuries have been caused by the brake problem but at least one fire was reported.
How GM Will Fix the Problem
Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness. According to GM, the replacement brake pressure switch wire harness contains a silicone sealant that prevents brake fluid from flowing through the harness.
Owners will be notified about the recall starting on July 28, 2025. Owners will be notified again once GM has the parts available to fix the issue. The GM number for this recall is N242482680. The NHTSA number for the recall is 25V390. Owners need to realize that even if they had their trucks fixed during the 2023 recall, this is a new issue that needs to be addressed.
