While many automotive companies are pulling back on their commitment to EV vehicles. Chevrolet appears to be doubling down on its 2025 Chevy Blazer SS EV. Chevy is reportedly phasing out its gas-powered version of the Blazer after the 2025 model while showcasing the EV. Chevrolet has announced that the 2025 Blazer SS EV will now pace the 67th Daytona 500. Being the pace car is an honor typically reserved for the most powerful performance vehicles, like Corvettes and Camaros.
“Chevrolet has a long history with racing – it’s in our DNA – and the Blazer EV SS is a testament to that,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “We’re excited for customers to watch the Blazer EV SS — the quickest SS we’ve ever produced — pace such an iconic race this weekend.”
The 2025 Chevrolet Blazer SS EV
The 2025 Blazer SS EV is the quickest SS model Chevrolet has ever produced. The Blazer SS EV is equipped with the Wide Open Watts (WOW) booster, which propels the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, and produces 615 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. torque. The Wide Open Watts or WOW feature is only available on the SS version. The Blazer SS EV also features front Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned chassis, a best-in-class 17.7-inch-diagonal color touchscreen, standard Super Cruise driver assistance technology and offers an EPA-estimated 303 miles of range.
What the SS Designation Means
Super Sport, or SS, was the performance option package offered by Chevrolet on a limited number of its vehicles. All SS models come with distinctive "SS" markings on their exterior. The SS package was reportedly first made available for the 1961 Impala. There have been several other famous SS models like the Camaro, Chevelle, Impala and the Nova. A quick check of the Chevrolet media website shows that an SS version was still offered on the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro. The website did not list a 2022 version.
The Super Sport trim in the past has indicated special badging on both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, chassis reinforcements, stronger springs, shocks and upgraded brakes. Chevrolet has not indicated what the SS will mean for the Blazer EV.
This marks the first time a Blazer has paced “The Great American Race,” the first time an EV has paced the race and the 16th time Chevrolet has led the Daytona 500 field to green. The pace car set for the DAYTONA 500 is a production vehicle with no performance upgrades and features custom graphics and embedded strobe lighting.
“Chevrolet is extremely proud to be a part of NASCAR’s season openers by pacing all of the events this year at the famed World Center of Racing,” said Campbell. “We are privileged to continue our relationship with Daytona International Speedway again in 2025.”
“We’re honored to have Chevrolet as a founding partner of Daytona International Speedway, and that the iconic brand chose to feature the all-new Blazer EV SS at the DAYTONA 500,” said DIS track president Frank Kelleher. “The Blazer EV SS is surely going to set the pace for another exciting race.”
Future of the Gas-Powered Chevrolet Blazer
Chevrolet is not commenting on its plans to discontinue the ICE version of the Chevrolet Blazer. GMAuthority is reporting that Chevy will end production of the ICE version in North America but continue to sell the gas-powered version in China. The Chevy Blazer is produced at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico. The plant is scheduled to switch to producing only EVs after the 2025 model year.
Of course, Chevrolet could always change direction now that President Trump has slowed the mandate for the industry to become mostly electric.
The Blazer SS EV is scheduled set to go on sale in the next few months. The 67th Daytona 500 will take place February 16, 2025, at the Daytona International Speedway.
