2016 Ram Truck owners are complaining of their windows falling off the tracks

2016 Ram Truck owners are complaining that in cold weather, their truck windows are falling off the tracks and down into their doors.

Baby, it’s cold outside! And that is apparently the problem for several owners of 2016 Ram trucks. They are complaining on a Ram Truck forum about their windows falling off the tracks and down into their doors. It is mainly happening to the driver’s side window and only in cold weather, the worst possible time to have your window disappear.

Jimbo, from Michigan, started the ball or window rolling. “Anyone have trouble with their drivers window falling off track? I have 2 (16's) and both did it. I tried to roll the window down, motor was working, window stayed in place. Granted, it was cold out and apparently they were frozen. Anyways...when it got a bit warmer, as I was driving, the window fell down. Never had this happen on any other vehicle (or my 2013 or 2014 Ram). I'm wondering if I have to worry about this every time it gets cold out. Seems like they'd have a safety device or something on these power windows.”

Jared, from Vancouver, jumped in. “I think mine just did the exact same thing, I'm going to go down to the dealer and hopefully they can take care of it today as its my only vehicle.”

Drivers are alarmed at how often it is occurring. “This is very common on the '16 models, our dealer said he has had them in all winter. It's happened twice to mine and the last time we didn't even roll the window down and weren't in the truck.
They designed the window track differently this year and it doesn't work. Everyone needs to let them know so that they will do something about it rather than just putting it back on the track and waiting for it to happen again. This is fine while its under warranty but do you want to be taking your truck in for this the rest of the time you have it?”

A Mississippi owner, who calls himself Draft, hasn’t had it happen, yet. “This is troubling to me. You would think that this would show up during testing. Ram should back these with a fix of some kind. Since I already have the headlight flicker this just adds to my worries.”

Kevin, from Maryland, asks what seems to be the obvious question. “Is this only a problem with the drivers side window or is that the side that is used the most so having the most problems? I would assume both sides have the same design. Reason I ask is my drivers side window makes some awful creaking noises when I first hit the button to roll it down. It sounds like its going to fall off the track. Its fine going up.”

Ranman, from Ontario, isn’t happy with his dealer’s response. “It happened to my 2016 last weekend. Took in and dealer fixed under warranty and proceeded to tell me if it happens again they will not cover it?? They said it happens when the window gets frozen to the top of the door and you try to roll it down. They told me are you ready for this,"wait for the truck to warm up before trying to roll down the window"!! Now it just happened again this morning. Cant wait to go see them next week and see what they say.”

Jared says his dealer is being very proactive about the issue. “I was actually pretty impressed with my dealer, not only did they take my truck in right away unannounced to put the window back on the track they told me that they have decided that they're going to replace the whole window regulator assembly and have ordered one.”

James, a new Ram owner, says they all need to band together to make Ram address the issue. “We all need to contact Ram about this, blaming the driver for a bad design is pathetic.” James adds, “This has everything to do with poor design and shoddy workmanship. How hard is it to make a vehicle in which the windows don't fall out when the temperature goes below 32 degrees? Can't be all that hard, they seemed to have done it for the last 100 years.”

Thunderhorse, who posts frequently on the forums, suggested that they take their concerns straight to Ram. “If everyone were to contact Ramcares that may get you some traction in getting a TSB.

Several of the 2016 Ram owners have resorted to taping their windows closed until they can get to the dealerships, convinced that they will fall down again. That has to be very annoying and is not acceptable on a new vehicle.

Another Ontario driver is very frustrated. “have had my truck for 3 weeks now and happened for the second time today and that was even after running/driving for 25 minutes. yes I'm in ontario, canada but none of my other trucks ever had this problem.” That certainly dispels the idea that warming the truck up would avert the problem.

Cowboy, from Rochester, MN, also joined the no window club. “This happened to me too. The dealer said that Dodge is receiving thousands of complaints.”

It will be interesting to see if Ram issues a technical service bulletin to fix all of the windows that are falling off their tracks. As long as they know what the problem is, it should be an easy fix. The other big question is “Have they fixed it on the 2017s”?

4 th time in for the same fix this morn. 80 mile drive to my Montana sealer with the window down is getting old. Out of warrenty in my 2017 1500. I usually call Chrysler and they cover the cost. Hope a better solution arises

After 5 repairs under warranty, Chrysler authorized a 1 time out of warranty repair, then said any other repair was on us. We contacted a LemonLaw Lawyer and sued.....we did get a small settlement but the problem persists. Chrysler Lawyers suggested that the truck should be garage kept, that we “warm it up” before using the window ( the first time this happened we were on the Turnpike, 100 miles from home, The truck was warm!). They also said to keep the window cracked when it is parked. We now rarely drive the truck when it is cold, have put tape over the window control buttons on remind us not to use the window, and will NEVER buy another RAM product!

Window clips fail. It’s a common problem
Plan on shelling out over $300 to have the window clips replaced when they break and the window comes off the track. Even though this is a common problem Chrysler refuses to recall this and fix the problem. This is a safety issue if the window falls, shatters and you get glass in your eye or cut. And yes oh by the way any extended warranty will not cover this as it is not a mechanical failure. We have 5 Chrysler vehicles and this is the last straw. I will no longer be purchasing Chrysler vehicles. Keep your $365

Happened to us had no idea this was such an issue with these trucks. Such a safety hazard as a child or a pet can go right out the window. I know cause it happened to us just this past weekend where our dog went out the open window as we were going down the road!!!! Thank god he was not seriously injured!!!

My 2016 right hand rear door window fell off as well. I went to dealer and they wanted $1100 to repair. Unreal. I decided to get a used one and do it myself for $150. I was thinking of trading the truck in for a new 2020. Hopefully they fixed the window problems.

Still happening on the 2017s. Mine did it last year all winter long and this year, the first cold day in November, my window was frozen, came off the track and fell inside the door. Definitely a manufacturer issue, it's really upsetting.

I had this same issue on my 2016 Ram which I have since traded for a 2018. Go figure, 8 am this morning the window broke free from the regulator. And the truck had been running with defrost on high for 25 mins. Totally unacceptable

I have a 2017 and the same thing has happened to my driver's side window twice now in 2 weeks, so obviously they did not address it on the 17's either.

2016 Dodge Ram did not make it through the 2020-2021 winter in KS. it Froze shut , motor kept working how ever the window did not move im guessing it unthought and it slid down by its self halve way, hand pushed it up and ran the motor to hold it shut it held shut all winter unable to roll window down.

Upper 20's here this morning, as I depressed the window switch I heard the usual frozen window sound on my 2018 RAM 1500 and I released the switch ... but not quick enough ... POP! Not typical. Bad design for sure as only once before in my 50 years of driving has this happened and that time I was my fault for trying over and over again to lower the window until the plastic piece broke. Why don't they have an over current switch on the motor? Seems simple enough to design this as a solution instead of "do not use your windows if it's below freezing." Here in MN that would be 6 months of the year!

I have a 2018 2500 Ram and just got my driver's window broken clip fixed for the 6th time. I am told this is only an issue in the North. That is not an answer since I am not moving to the South. I would like to disable the window auto down feature because when selected and the window is frozen, the clip will break. I have a rural mail box and a plow on my truck. Both require the window to safely operate in the winter time. I had a 2004 2500 Ram, and I would hold the down switch and pound on the window until it would go down. Never an issue, so why can't the re-engineer the new vehicles like the old ones. There needs to be a safety recall issued to force Dodge to design an acceptable fix.

In Ontario Canada have had this happen about 10 times this winter even after driving for a half hour with heat on high.
I replaced the plastic clips with new ones last winter it’s no better it’s just plain and simple bad engineering!’

I have a 2018 doge ram 2500 and the weather is 20 degrees outside , while driving my truck the drivers window dropped into the door. I contacted dodge dealer and they will not warranty the work as my truck has 69,000 mile on it!

My daughter has this problem in her 2018 ram. She had it fixed at the dealership and two days later the part holding the window broke! Cost her 160 to fix it. She forgot about the window and the cold. Rolled it down today. Here we go again. All windows should be able to roll down in the winter. She rolled the window down in a drive through! Such bs!

verere Asheshe (not verified)    November 20, 2022 - 12:43AM

Every winter I have same problem. This winter i only use passenger window after my last torture. It fell once when i try rolling down. I was so cold on my way from work. Now I dont bother using it. Dodge should recall the windows.

Rhonda Shampo (not verified)    April 25, 2023 - 8:32PM

I have a Dodge 2016 truck and have replaced the driver's door clip every year in the winter. I also purchased the life time warranty for $5000 and they tell me it isn't covered. The policy states the window door flex track is covered. Who wants to pay $150. Every winter!
