2016 Ram Truck owners are complaining of their windows falling off the tracks

2016 Ram Truck owners are complaining that in cold weather, their truck windows are falling off the tracks and down into their doors.

Baby, it’s cold outside! And that is apparently the problem for several owners of 2016 Ram trucks. They are complaining on a Ram Truck forum about their windows falling off the tracks and down into their doors. It is mainly happening to the driver’s side window and only in cold weather, the worst possible time to have your window disappear.

Jimbo, from Michigan, started the ball or window rolling. “Anyone have trouble with their drivers window falling off track? I have 2 (16's) and both did it. I tried to roll the window down, motor was working, window stayed in place. Granted, it was cold out and apparently they were frozen. Anyways...when it got a bit warmer, as I was driving, the window fell down. Never had this happen on any other vehicle (or my 2013 or 2014 Ram). I'm wondering if I have to worry about this every time it gets cold out. Seems like they'd have a safety device or something on these power windows.”

Jared, from Vancouver, jumped in. “I think mine just did the exact same thing, I'm going to go down to the dealer and hopefully they can take care of it today as its my only vehicle.”

Drivers are alarmed at how often it is occurring. “This is very common on the '16 models, our dealer said he has had them in all winter. It's happened twice to mine and the last time we didn't even roll the window down and weren't in the truck.
They designed the window track differently this year and it doesn't work. Everyone needs to let them know so that they will do something about it rather than just putting it back on the track and waiting for it to happen again. This is fine while its under warranty but do you want to be taking your truck in for this the rest of the time you have it?”

A Mississippi owner, who calls himself Draft, hasn’t had it happen, yet. “This is troubling to me. You would think that this would show up during testing. Ram should back these with a fix of some kind. Since I already have the headlight flicker this just adds to my worries.”

Kevin, from Maryland, asks what seems to be the obvious question. “Is this only a problem with the drivers side window or is that the side that is used the most so having the most problems? I would assume both sides have the same design. Reason I ask is my drivers side window makes some awful creaking noises when I first hit the button to roll it down. It sounds like its going to fall off the track. Its fine going up.”

Ranman, from Ontario, isn’t happy with his dealer’s response. “It happened to my 2016 last weekend. Took in and dealer fixed under warranty and proceeded to tell me if it happens again they will not cover it?? They said it happens when the window gets frozen to the top of the door and you try to roll it down. They told me are you ready for this,"wait for the truck to warm up before trying to roll down the window"!! Now it just happened again this morning. Cant wait to go see them next week and see what they say.”

Jared says his dealer is being very proactive about the issue. “I was actually pretty impressed with my dealer, not only did they take my truck in right away unannounced to put the window back on the track they told me that they have decided that they're going to replace the whole window regulator assembly and have ordered one.”

James, a new Ram owner, says they all need to band together to make Ram address the issue. “We all need to contact Ram about this, blaming the driver for a bad design is pathetic.” James adds, “This has everything to do with poor design and shoddy workmanship. How hard is it to make a vehicle in which the windows don't fall out when the temperature goes below 32 degrees? Can't be all that hard, they seemed to have done it for the last 100 years.”

Thunderhorse, who posts frequently on the forums, suggested that they take their concerns straight to Ram. “If everyone were to contact Ramcares that may get you some traction in getting a TSB.

Several of the 2016 Ram owners have resorted to taping their windows closed until they can get to the dealerships, convinced that they will fall down again. That has to be very annoying and is not acceptable on a new vehicle.

Another Ontario driver is very frustrated. “have had my truck for 3 weeks now and happened for the second time today and that was even after running/driving for 25 minutes. yes I'm in ontario, canada but none of my other trucks ever had this problem.” That certainly dispels the idea that warming the truck up would avert the problem.

Cowboy, from Rochester, MN, also joined the no window club. “This happened to me too. The dealer said that Dodge is receiving thousands of complaints.”

It will be interesting to see if Ram issues a technical service bulletin to fix all of the windows that are falling off their tracks. As long as they know what the problem is, it should be an easy fix. The other big question is “Have they fixed it on the 2017s”?

I reported this issue on a RAM forum in Dec 2016 shortly after purchasing my 2016 Rebel in Sept. I had my vehicle in the dealer a total of six times that winter to fix this window issue, and additional 5 times during the winter of 2017. The problem started again this winter ( repaired 2 times). I finally called Dodge and filed a complaint and was told there was a TSB issued to replace the window clips with heavier ones. Just got back from the dealer with new clips installed, so I'll wait and see. Not happy with the dealer not knowing about this TSB after two years with this problem.

The driver's window has come off the tracks on my 2016 Ram 2500 Laramie Limited 4 times now. I read the previous post about the TSB and heavier clips and went to my dealer. They confirmed that that the clips were updated with new part# 5537 2961 AD which superceded part #5537 2961 AA.

I purchased them out of pocket as I didn't have time to leave my truck for repair. I've actually gotten pretty good at putting the window back on in about 15 minutes. (Helps to have the proper tools and a warm garage)

To make a long story short, the clips are IDENTICAL! despite the so called upgrade. My old clips were shot so I replaced them anyway. Don't know how long these will last but I doubt that long

**I had a similar problem on my 2002 VW Golf and VW ended up replacing the window clips with metal ones.

Driver's window has come off 4 times on my 2016 Ram 2500. Saw precious post about TSB and went to dealer. Part number for clip has been super Ede so I bought a pair. Got home only to find out that part is exactly the same plastic crap.

I think these power window complaints certainly aren't being addressed by Chrysler. My 2018 has been in twice this year for broken clips, never had this problem with 03 Silverado!

Love my 2016 Ram but today, while in the dealer for oil change and service, the window dropped for a second time(during winter) since I have owned the truck (purchased summer 2017), truck has 17,000 miles.... lucky for me the window dropped while the service person was driving it, it had been inside shop so they repaired, but come on RAM this is a major issue with 2016 RAM 1500 Trucks!!

My 2017 Ram suffered a failure on drivers door window. Hit the down button and nothing happened. The window didn’t move but the motor operated and it must have been in the auto down mode. When I closed my door the next time the window dropped to mid[oint and stayed there. Seems there should be a torque limited feature on this. Was quoted 750.00 to repair. Looks like I will be doing the fix myself for that price.

My 2016 putdoorsman is doing same thing. Window wont go up. Its loose in the track. Took it to chrysler. Theyre trying to sell me a whole new window regulator buolt into door panel gor $825 plus installation. Says its not covered under my 100k warranty. Seems to me like its probably not the regulator but the track clips that hold the window. I think we need to go after chrysler quality control.

This just happened for the 2nd time (drivers window) in my 2016 Ram Rebel. This time the clips broke (last time they could just clip them back in) - and I’m told not covered under my manufactures warranty or extended plan i got. So $132 to fix a $5 part. Guy at my dealership told me - ya we get a lot of those and it’s because they put plastic clips in this design so they would fail before the motor/regulator. Stupid design. And I have to put my window up/down before truck is warmed up to fold my mirrors in/out to get in /out of my garage. Anyone heard or know if RAM will address this?

Happened to me in VA - last week for the first time. I am told by the dealer that it will cost 108 dollars to just bring in my 2016 ram for them to hook up to their machine to get a "code" - this is just to see if "EasyCare" will cover this issue! How stupid to they think I am?????

A code for your window dropping down off the track? Bwa ha ha ha ha . So ask them where the sensor is that detects this problem because that's the only way it would throw a code. Find another dealer because most people are getting it fixed under warranty.

2018 Ram power wagon bought in September and have had it to the dealership twice to fix this issue. Said it was my fault for man handling the window when it was stuck. I guess I didn't realize pushing a button was considered man handling... very disappointing

I have a 16 ram rebel with 58klm on my passenger window fell down and they replaced the plastic clips now it did it again and now it is a 700.00 part they tell me it's the regulator that is broken and warranty doesn't cover it. Mad as hell I will be buying no more mopar products......

I just had this happen to my All New 2019 Ram Crew rear drivers window. Seems 3 years later they are still having the same problem with new body style. I've had the truck for 2 weeks and already have to go back to the dealer. Never had this issue on any other vehicle, I expect more from a $50k truck. I never should have bought this pos, obviously Chrysler doesn't give a damn.

I WILL NEVER BUY A RAM TRUCK AGAIN !! My 2017 Ram 2500 has been had the window fall off the track 4 times and it seems like it's about ready to happen again. POS.

Just had my third drop since I got the truck, it's a 2016 RAM 1500, first two times the dealership fixed it under warranty, I'm just out of warranty and it happened again. How can this be being ignored by RAM? Also, why does it cost around $750 to "fix" it?

Mine fell off 2 twice now in 1 month. This is very annoying. They should do a recall and fix this problem for their customers...

Pat (not verified)    December 30, 2019 - 4:10PM

We contacted a lawyer about the problem....got a small settlement...we do not drive the truck when it is “cold”. Still not happy, very poor design...I did not realize the problem continued for additional years!

I just had this happen to my 2017 RAM passenger side for the first time with me just buying it in November of last year.

Happened to me in my 2019 Power Wagon this morning. It was not that cold outside (about 30). Windshield wipers were not stuck to the windshield so I assumed it would be okay to roll the window down. Exact same symptoms. Loud noise. While driving down the street, it keeps falling open. Scheduled and appointment with Dodge. Service rep told me it happened to her twice already.

I have a 2018 Dodge Ram 2500. No problems last winter, my first winter with my new truck. This weekend my driver's window was frozen like so often in northern climates. I heard a zinging sound when I pressed the window down button. It was a sound I had never heard before, and knew it could be good. To my surprise when my window thawed out it fell down inside the door. The dealer told me this only happens when the window is frozen, like really that happens all the time and I need to open my window when I snow plow, or to get my mail out of our mail box. He said don't try to open the window if you think it might be frozen. I think there needs to be a TSB started to get this design flaw repaired.

2017 2500 here. Same issues, in cold weather the clips/retainers popped off and let the driver door glass fall inside the door. Popped it back in myself the first time and took to the dealer the second time since I have 4 months left of factory warranty. Speaking to the service advisor, she stated they see the issue nearly daily in the winter and stock the clips in bulk. The advisor agreed 100% that it is just a crappy cost cutting design and she feels almost embarrassed that this is happening on brand new expensive trucks. The OEM clips are $2.30 RETAIL if that says anything about the quality and durability of the product. This is the first and likely the last Ram I will ever purchase given the multitude of issues I've already had.

We had this happen to our truck 6 times, 5 under warranty! After warranty expired, we hired a Lemon Law lawyer and sued...got a small settlement but the problem persists. Lawyers for Chrysler said that the problem was ours because our truck was not garage kept, also were told to w”warm up “ the truck before driving and not to try to “force the window”, which being an automatic electric window, which we never did....Wealso will never buy a Ram product ever again!

I had a 2016 eco Diesel it had the same issue. I now have 2017 Ram 2500 same issue.
I losted a ton of money on that eco diesel. Trade in sucked
I believe it's time for a change.

I have a 2017 Ram 2500 and had the same problem. They wanted $155.00 to repair. I bought the plactic pieces from Dodge for $5.05 and took 30 min to fix. It will probably happen again but now I know what to do. They said it would take 3 hours to fix.
