2016 Ram Truck owners are complaining of their windows falling off the tracks

2016 Ram Truck owners are complaining that in cold weather, their truck windows are falling off the tracks and down into their doors.

Baby, it’s cold outside! And that is apparently the problem for several owners of 2016 Ram trucks. They are complaining on a Ram Truck forum about their windows falling off the tracks and down into their doors. It is mainly happening to the driver’s side window and only in cold weather, the worst possible time to have your window disappear.

Jimbo, from Michigan, started the ball or window rolling. “Anyone have trouble with their drivers window falling off track? I have 2 (16's) and both did it. I tried to roll the window down, motor was working, window stayed in place. Granted, it was cold out and apparently they were frozen. Anyways...when it got a bit warmer, as I was driving, the window fell down. Never had this happen on any other vehicle (or my 2013 or 2014 Ram). I'm wondering if I have to worry about this every time it gets cold out. Seems like they'd have a safety device or something on these power windows.”

Jared, from Vancouver, jumped in. “I think mine just did the exact same thing, I'm going to go down to the dealer and hopefully they can take care of it today as its my only vehicle.”

Drivers are alarmed at how often it is occurring. “This is very common on the '16 models, our dealer said he has had them in all winter. It's happened twice to mine and the last time we didn't even roll the window down and weren't in the truck.
They designed the window track differently this year and it doesn't work. Everyone needs to let them know so that they will do something about it rather than just putting it back on the track and waiting for it to happen again. This is fine while its under warranty but do you want to be taking your truck in for this the rest of the time you have it?”

A Mississippi owner, who calls himself Draft, hasn’t had it happen, yet. “This is troubling to me. You would think that this would show up during testing. Ram should back these with a fix of some kind. Since I already have the headlight flicker this just adds to my worries.”

Kevin, from Maryland, asks what seems to be the obvious question. “Is this only a problem with the drivers side window or is that the side that is used the most so having the most problems? I would assume both sides have the same design. Reason I ask is my drivers side window makes some awful creaking noises when I first hit the button to roll it down. It sounds like its going to fall off the track. Its fine going up.”

Ranman, from Ontario, isn’t happy with his dealer’s response. “It happened to my 2016 last weekend. Took in and dealer fixed under warranty and proceeded to tell me if it happens again they will not cover it?? They said it happens when the window gets frozen to the top of the door and you try to roll it down. They told me are you ready for this,"wait for the truck to warm up before trying to roll down the window"!! Now it just happened again this morning. Cant wait to go see them next week and see what they say.”

Jared says his dealer is being very proactive about the issue. “I was actually pretty impressed with my dealer, not only did they take my truck in right away unannounced to put the window back on the track they told me that they have decided that they're going to replace the whole window regulator assembly and have ordered one.”

James, a new Ram owner, says they all need to band together to make Ram address the issue. “We all need to contact Ram about this, blaming the driver for a bad design is pathetic.” James adds, “This has everything to do with poor design and shoddy workmanship. How hard is it to make a vehicle in which the windows don't fall out when the temperature goes below 32 degrees? Can't be all that hard, they seemed to have done it for the last 100 years.”

Thunderhorse, who posts frequently on the forums, suggested that they take their concerns straight to Ram. “If everyone were to contact Ramcares that may get you some traction in getting a TSB.

Several of the 2016 Ram owners have resorted to taping their windows closed until they can get to the dealerships, convinced that they will fall down again. That has to be very annoying and is not acceptable on a new vehicle.

Another Ontario driver is very frustrated. “have had my truck for 3 weeks now and happened for the second time today and that was even after running/driving for 25 minutes. yes I'm in ontario, canada but none of my other trucks ever had this problem.” That certainly dispels the idea that warming the truck up would avert the problem.

Cowboy, from Rochester, MN, also joined the no window club. “This happened to me too. The dealer said that Dodge is receiving thousands of complaints.”

It will be interesting to see if Ram issues a technical service bulletin to fix all of the windows that are falling off their tracks. As long as they know what the problem is, it should be an easy fix. The other big question is “Have they fixed it on the 2017s”?

This just happened to my 2016 RAM passenger side window. Heard a rattle, rolled the window down and after I powered it up, it fell repeatedly about halfway down.

Happened to me today with my 2015 2500 RAM driver side window and 20 degrees outside. Not happy to hear that after fixed it will probably happen again and I am out of warranty by a few thousand miles.

Happened to me as well today on my 2016 Ram, Drivers side window falls as the window is put down. Sticks at the top and I hear the track moving then the window suddenly drops. I came out of the grocery store tonight and my window was half down..

I have the same problem with my 2017 ram 1500, just had it fixed, one week later did it again. back to the dealer.

I have had mine fail twice in about 6 weeks. The second time my dealer also replaced the regulator. Hopefully it will be fine now. The other comment from the dealer which is not acceptable is: Don't use your windows when it is cold out and they could be frozen. I have had many other vehicles with power windows and never had a problem. Not impressed with Dodge on this one... I am afraid to use my windows now.

I have a 2017 Dodge Ram . The drivers window has fallen out twice in the last month. Both times they were frozen I touched the button the motar was running and the window dropped This time same thing I got the window back-but then it dropped when I started driving any help coming?

Happened to me yesterday, 17 Ram 1500, going to dealer to get it fixed today. My first Dodge, I've had lots of Chevys and never had this happen...might be going back.

Update... they told me they would cover it one time... said lots of people have had this problem because winter has been so cold this year and they're not letting it warm up enough. Boy do they have a surprise coming.

I'm having the same issue as all that have posted before me. Scheduled to be at the dealer this coming Tuesday. this has happened to me twice in the past week. I was able to get the window to operate after the first time but the most recent time the glass actually completely fell down inside the door. I was able to get the glass back on track but he plastic clips are definitely shot.
At least I have plenty of info and ammo from this thread to go at the dealer.

I have a 2016 Ecodiesel, this is the 2nd time I’ve had he same issue. Try to lower the window after warming up for 15 minutes and the window stops but the motor keeps going.
I’m at the dealership now being told that they can’t fix it under warranty.
This is ridiculous that Ram won’t fix this issue.
How many years have vehicles had windows going up and down and these guys STILL can’t get it right??

Tyler (not verified)    February 23, 2018 - 8:31AM

My 2016 ram bighorn does the same thing. Once last year the first year I had the truck. and twice so far this year. Happened again this morning. The dealership has been nothing but helpful with the situation they fix it every time. But with only a few thousand miles left on the warranty. I called RAM this morning and spoke with a woman who gave me a reference number and told me to call back when it goes back to the dealership so she can get more info and figure out a solution. I mean we all know why it's happening..it's the plastic clips. But the window mechanism is smart enough to stop going up if your finger is pinched. but not smart enough to sence the glass being frozen shut. and not destroy itself.

Ram 2017. Same exact problem. Twice this winter. Took it to dealer (st jerome, quebec) who told me "the truck is not good in winter"...first time owner, bought in May. Bad mistake. Wont repeat.

My husband bought a new 2017 ram 1500 this winter months later the driver side winhdow comes off. We get it fixed and a month later the same problem. Not really happy that this keep happening to a brand new vehicle what is going to happen when the warranty wears out? If they think we are going to pay for this two and three times a winter they are crazy!

Amy (not verified)    March 5, 2018 - 4:26PM

To answer your question about “ have they fixed the 2017’s” the answer is no. Brand new truck has been in twice for this issue.

Tammy Brendly (not verified)    March 14, 2018 - 4:49PM

My 2016 passenger window just did same thing. Came out from store the window was down in the middle of the winter. Not happy! Hey

Rene (not verified)    April 5, 2018 - 12:05PM

Well I can tell you for sure it's not only the 2017 Rams, I have a 2015 that just did the same to me and it was only 30F outside. I'm from Ontario and can't believe that Ram cannot come up with a better system. May have to change to a different company when it comes to trade in time.......

Don Sweers (not verified)    April 14, 2018 - 3:50PM

I had my 2016 Ram 1500 a little over a year and a half, and it this happened to me this past winter, just like the article describes. Took it to the dealer and they wanted to charge me over $1500 to repair. Needless to say, I declined. I can't believe Ram has not done a recall on this! Very disappointed!

Hey Don and everyone else,
I believe this issue HAS been fixed. My dealership (Jim Pattinson Ram/Jeep/etc etc in Surrey British Columbia) put on a brand new and improved (supposedly) part. Apparently the old ones were plastic and keep breaking off.
Odd tho, how if your arm is in the window when going up, it will stop it, but when going down it will snap this heavy duty piece of plastic.
Good luck all!

My window has fallen off track for the third time they tell me to warm up my truck before I roll the driver side down this doesn't seem to work neither does taking it in to have it fixed seems to be a bad design left in the cold 2017 Dodge Ram 2500

Paul (not verified)    June 18, 2018 - 4:23PM

I have 2016 ram 1500. Passengers window has come off the twice! Dealer has fixed twice. No charge. Once was in cold weather and just yesterday June 17th. The mechanic said he guarantee it won't happen again! I will keep you posted.

Big Lew (not verified)    July 25, 2018 - 3:23PM

Afraid I made a big mistake. Just bought what I thought would be a nice 2017 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4. Middle of July and drivers window is off the track. And what I read here, may be very costly to have repaired. Not happy. Should have went with the Chevy.

After the 4th time this happened with my 2016 Ram, I asked for the broken part. I told them I was going to have a metal one one made. I just can’t afford the time and money to be replacing this thing every time I roll down my window in the cold. I was out of warranty, with a window down in winter. They have you by the balls. I had to pay for the repair but corporate had them pay it back and made a metal clip for it.
We will see how this clip hold up this winter.

Neil Snyder (not verified)    December 10, 2018 - 9:57AM

My 2017 RAM is in for the third time today for repair of the window mechanism. I am told the plastic clip that breaks is designed to break if the window is frozen. It is this way to prevent breaking of the window track or the window itself which would be more expensive than the clip. Dodge engineers really blew it here. I have had many other vehicles with power windows that would just stall the motor if the window was frozen without breaking something that required you to take your vehicle in for service. Truly incompetent engineering. I would not buy another RAM at this point. Tell your friends. The only way they will come up with an acceptable fix to the problem is if it costs them in new truck sales.

I live in warm AZ, never had the problem with the window until I went to SLC, on the way home , having driven well over 100 miles , Yes the Truck was warm inside, my wife lowered the passenger window only to have it not go back up. I pulled off the freeway to try to get the window up , it slipped from my hands and went to the bottom of the door.
This may not have been real bad other than we still had over 200 miles to drive home on a freeway with temps below freezing most of the way.
I stopped at the first truck stop , 20 miles down the road, and bought a $5 mexican blanket for $21 and wrapped the inside of the door with it. Hanging out the top and bottom, and drove home with the heat on full blast.
Today I tried to see what the problem was, I quickly discovered it was a MOPAR problem. I have not been able to remove the inner panel yet , but the cable operated window is off its winding mechanism as is some metal bracket.
I stumbled across this site while looking to see how to fix it.
I will be calling a dealer today , and I am out of warranty , 3 years almost to the day and probably way too many miles .
Toyota Tundra , here I come.......
