Dan, known by the username Mousejumper on the Tacoma4G forum, recently shared a heartfelt post about his mixed emotions over an exciting yet nerve-wracking purchase. A current Nissan owner, Dan is about to become a first-time truck owner and has ordered a 2024 Toyota Tacoma Limited in Wind Chill Pearl, set to arrive in just a few weeks. However, his excitement has been slightly clouded by apprehension after reading mixed reviews about the new Tacoma. He writes:
“I absolutely love reading and learning about everybody’s Tacoma experiences. I myself have never owned a truck, let alone a Toyota Tacoma. With that said, I have a 2024 Tacoma Limited in Wind Chill Pearl on order expected to be delivered in a couple of weeks and have been really excited about it. But lately, I find myself a bit nervous after going into forums and reading so many negative stories people have written about the new Tacomas. Obviously, I’ve read a lot of positive stories, but like I said I feel a bit nervous about my purchase and don’t even have the truck yet. I’m sure it’s just me worrying too much. Keep the positive stories coming please.”

Dan’s vulnerability and honesty have sparked a wave of encouraging responses from the Tacoma community. Many seasoned Tacoma owners were quick to reassure him, citing their positive experiences with Toyota trucks. Lando, another forum member, shared his thoughts:
“I put six thousand miles on my Toyota Tacoma in just two months with zero problems. Toyota has a reputation for reliability, so when issues arise, they get magnified. However, it’s disappointing to see failures and hear about people waiting several weeks or months for replacement parts from Toyota!”
Ruissimo echoed a similar sentiment, reminding Dan to put online negativity into perspective. He commented:
“I haven’t had any issues with mine, and hopefully it stays that way. What I would say to you is if 1,000 people buy a product and 5 people hate it, you’ll see 25 posts about how bad that product is because people who are frustrated want to share it with the world. The other 995 people are too busy enjoying it, and some, like me, may post something positive now and then.”
Why the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Stands Out
The new fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma has been a game-changer in the midsize truck segment. Known for its rugged reliability and off-road prowess, Toyota has taken the Tacoma to the next level with the 2024 redesign. This iteration introduces a host of performance upgrades, modern technology, and stylish aesthetics that make it one of the most anticipated trucks of the year.
For overlanding fans, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter trim, for example, is getting a lot of attention with its bold, rugged design and off-road capabilities. Designed specifically for overlanders, it comes equipped with features like a factory-installed snorkel, heavy-duty skid plates, and an advanced suspension system tailored for extreme terrain.
While the 2024 Toyota Tacoma offers impressive tech features like wireless charging and an upgraded infotainment system, some owners are discovering that not all wireless devices work seamlessly. For instance, one Tacoma owner shared his experience of needing to invest in a new phone case to ensure proper wireless charging functionality. This highlights how even cutting-edge features may require small adjustments for the perfect experience.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a new hybrid powertrain. The i-FORCE MAX system combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, delivering impressive power and fuel efficiency. Additionally, Toyota has introduced an all-new fully boxed frame for enhanced durability and a coil-spring rear suspension for improved ride quality and handling. These changes mark a significant departure from the traditional leaf-spring setup, making the new Tacoma a more versatile vehicle for both on-road and off-road adventures.
The interior also received a significant overhaul. With higher-quality materials, a larger infotainment system, and advanced features like a panoramic sunroof and heated and ventilated seats, the 2024 Tacoma feels more luxurious than ever before. The Limited trim, in particular, emphasizes premium comfort, making it an excellent choice for first-time truck buyers like Dan.
Addressing the Concerns
It’s natural for someone entering the truck world to feel overwhelmed, especially when reading about issues online. However, Tacoma’s legendary reliability is one of the reasons it has consistently been a top choice among truck enthusiasts. While some owners have reported isolated issues, the vast majority of Tacoma owners praise its durability, resale value, and capability.
Dan’s post serves as a reminder that online forums can sometimes amplify negativity. For every negative post, there are countless untold stories of satisfied owners enjoying their trucks. Lando’s and Ruissimo’s comments highlight this point perfectly and should reassure nervous buyers like Dan.

Don’t put premium in that high pressure turbo engine. Please don’t. I’ll continue to stay busy at work repairing turbo gasoline engines because the average person is clueless.

What does the label on the fuel door say? If it says 87 required, 91 recommended, you're good to use regular. But as a mechanic you know that, right? You know the engine computer will adjust the engine output to the octane recieved, right?? Of course you do... You're a mechanic and much much much smarter than the Toyota engineers that created the engine. Toyota engineers must have you on speed dial so they can run all their technical questions through you, right? Oh I wish I was in your shoes, the envy of the entire automotive world.

Well, they replaced two engines (4 and 6) that had legendary durability and replaced them both with a new turbocharged engine. To expect the same durability (if you intend to keep it for a long time) is not logical. They moved production to Mexico to save money, then increased the price by 15-20%. Time to buy a V6 Frontier.

Hi David, I used to work as a mechanic at a used car center and to see 10-15 year old Nissan Frontiers roll in with 300-350k miles and not have a sinlge problem was a norm for us. Let's see how Nissan's future will tell. Hopefully they don't fall into the same gameplan as Toyota.

Agreed. It'd be one thing to trade of reliability with price and pass on the savings to the customer, but with the markup, you're now talking something more like 30-50% mark up from previous cost levels.that were profitable. I would say they get to take inflation on parts into account to pass on at least a bit, but the reality is they lowered quality and amount of materials in so many ways (less and thinner metal, thinner glass, and thinner paint, and cheaper plastics), that this should not be a benefit to them for margin. That means these trucks need a 33-50% reduction to get back to baseline, on a vehicle that may be cooler in some ways but realistically won't last as long and will cost more with fixes and insurance along the way (some of which may be offset with increased MPG).
These vehicles are complete ripoffs now, unfortunately.

Hi Ken, Cool color choice. Yes I remember sitting in the back of my buddies 4th gen and it was pretty tight. To be fair, I'm 5'11 and almost 290lbs so I guess it was not built for heavy set guys.

I got a new Tacoma TRD offroad last February and have put 7k miles o it, with many of them on back roads here in Northern Nevada and California. So far it has been great, the only issue is that it is a long bed and is really a bigger truck than I wanted, almost full size.

As a mechanic, gasoline engines with turbos are not a good idea. You won’t see many 300k mile 4th gen Tacomas without costly issues. You will continue to see plenty of 3rd gen Tacomas racking up the miles.

After owning nothing but toyotas my whole life, my love affair ended after I bought my first Tacoma. I'm glad it was so shitty because I never woukd have bought my first American truck, and I will just say there is no going back. Ever! I've had gar less problems (almost none at all) with my last 2 (F series) trucks. One was an F250 i have had for 15 years and zero engine issues, and now a Lightning for 3 years and 35k miles and hasn't been in the shop once! I took a leap of faith with the electric and it's freaking awesome! Zero complaints. Now my ice vehicles all just sit.
I owned a 2019 Tacoma until…

I owned a 2019 Tacoma until November 2024. It was my third Tacoma and I was a solid fan due to their reliability. That all changed in September of 2024. My check engine light came on so I made an appointment with my mechanic to see what the issue was. The light went out two days before the appointment so I canceled it. Of course it came on again and the same thing happened. Another canceled appointment. The third time the light came on we were able to get my truck in and the diagnosis was not good. I had a burnt exhaust valve after 53,000 miles. The cost to repair the valve and check the others to make sure it was the only one needing attention was approximately $9000. I should mention that I don't use the dealer for oil changes or any other issues other than a recall. They charge $40 per hour more than my mechanic that I have used for years and I trust completely. My mechanic suggested I take the truck to the dealer since I bought the truck in August of 2019 so I was very close to being covered under the drive train warranty. I paid the dealer to diagnose the issue. They came to the same conclusion and their repair estimate was similar. The dealer understood that I was a few weeks over the 5 year term for the warranty but mentioned that Toyota has repaired vehicles in a similar situation in the past. He described it as "good faith" since I was so close to being under warranty. I was relieved to think there was a chance I could get my repairs covered. The dealer called me after speaking to the local representative for Toyota with bad news. He told me they would not pay for my repairs because I didn't use the dealer for service on my truck. I was angry and stated that I could prove that the truck was serviced as recommended by Toyota. Just not at the dealer after the first 2 years of free oil changes. Who changed my oil had nothing to do with a blown engine after 53,000 miles. I then appealed this decision to the next level of corporate Toyota twice. The first appeal was to cover the cost completely. The second appeal was to simply supply the parts necessary to put the engine back together. I was denied each time. Needless to say, that was my third and last Tacoma I will ever own. Toyota reputation for reliability went down the tubes after 53,000 miles in my case. I now own a Chevy Colorado and am very happy so far.

Bought aTacoma new in '09 &love it . No problems in 70,000 plus miles. It's been garage kept when not in use, still has original wiper blades that work well. Headlight lenses are not fogged up. 5000 mile or once a year synthetic oil changes. When the wheels fall off,I'll put new ones on and keep on driving it

I loved my 2016 trd sport. It was garage kept and serviced on schedule when needed. Never off road driven in city with occasional road trip. I had a total of 37000 miles on my truck. Took it in for annual state inspection and two major failures were found. The steering rack and main seal were bad and the dealership cost to repair was $5400 . Needless to say i got rid of it. Everything I've read said this is a well known issue with Toyota. Just not well known at time of purchase.

Previously owned a first generation and two third generations. Not pleased with the sound of the 4 cylinder engine. Sounds like a cheap SUV. My third generation trucks, one had wind noise and the other had a rear end whine that I was told was normal. And I saw were a dealer took the cheap front applied off to make it look more rugged. I did that, but I had an excessive wind noise. Been a die hard Toyota fan for many years, but would go a different direction next time. I’m already thinking of dumping this one. Very sad.

Just my take. I have been a truck owner for 25+ years now. My current vehicle, 2013 F150, has served me quite well. All of the trucks I have owned were fitted with naturally aspirated V8 engines. I do not prefer turbo-charged engines. Turbo-charger failure is not uncommon around 100K miles. Adding electric traction technology increases the complexity of the vehicle. KISS, is my motto. Today, both Ford and GM still offer highly reliable naturally aspirated V8 engines capable of handling all of the tasks most truck owners need to fulfill.

This my third Tacoma, and each has been very reliable. The Tacoma is unmatched in looks and performance. I now have a 2022 TRD and love it. The dealer is reliable and responsive. I have not had problems with any of them.y first was an SR5, the second was a 4wheel drive with a small back seat area, and this one is a long bed TRD 4 door beauty. Never had problems with them and don't anticipate any. I had a Tundra too, but it was too big. I have had great return on each one when selling them. My last one was traded in and they sold it the next day. I take care of my trucks and they take care of me. Hope this helps. You get what you pay for.

I factory ordered my 06 Tacoma and received it November 05. This last elk hunt I turned 250k miles. I wish I could attach pictures. My truck still looks fantastic. And I'm not gentle with it. I have pictures of it rock crawling in May of 06. Due to the lockers that were factory installed. To recent pictures taken on this years hunt. At over 10,000k elevation. And of the odometer showing it turning
250k. The only thing that I have done to add to it is a 3" load leveler lift and added a leaf to the rear due to hauling work trailers and my travel trailer. I just recently bought a 2013 Tundra crew max. 131k miles and am looking forward to a lot of years for this truck. Yes I do still have my Tacoma! I'm pretty sure we'll die together! LOL
