Honda acknowledges possible 2015 CR-V engine vibration

Via a video published April,7 American Honda Motor Company addresses reported intermittent engine vibration noted in 2015 CR-V. Timely!

Torque News received a question Tuesday night from a 2015 CR-V owner. Raj's CR-V vibrated in the driver’s seat and steering wheel at low idle. Was this vibration normal?

American Honda Motor Company released a consumer video Tuesday in response to an acknowledged engine or transmission component vibration reported by owners in (some) 2015 CR-V SUVs equipped with CVT transmission.

According to reporting consumers: The vibration can be intermittent, occurring most frequently at idle or below 2200 rpm while driving. Honda assures CR-V owners that there is no danger of component failure at this time, and that the motor company is actively analyzing the cause and effects of the reported vibration and possible component, product upgrade.

Frankly, spending several hours driving the much improved and upgraded 2015 Honda CR-V, was not enough time for Torque News to pick up on any “excessive” vibration generated through the nations # 1 selling SUV. And, if so noted, we would have most likely written this slight annoyance off as a characteristic of the EarthDreams ™ direct injected engine and CVT transmission.

Readers report to Torque News-Honda that the initial vibration may not be noted immediately, and may be intermittent as reported by Honda.

While Torque News did find the high pressure direct injected 1-VTEC 4 cylinder gasoline engine to have a diesel-like idle rattle, we didn’t note any excessive interior vibration in our test vehicle. We’ve been assured by Honda that direct injected engines have their own unique “sound” at idle.

However, American Honda Motors is exploring the cause and effect of the noted vibration, and will keep consumers informed when and if a source of and subsequent fix for the noted annoyance is found.

In the mean time Honda always recommends that if an excessive vibration of any kind is experienced in your car or light truck, a trip to the dealership is recommended as a safeguard against possible product failure. Honda further states that they appreciate owner feedback, and always welcome your comment.

I don't undersstand how this seems so minor in some cars and others have enormous vibration. Mine is awful ad extremely uncomfortable. I can feel the buzz inside my body later after I am out of the car..I am feeling some other symptoms along with the stress that may be from this car. I have discovered that when idling with foot on break, such as at a stop light, it goes crazy but it helps to turn up the AC all the way..now I have the loud blowing sound and the freezing to go through.. I think Honda is taking this as though it is not a problem. Are you kidding me? It's a big deal to me because it isn't a mild vibration and I spend hours in my car.. I was not told about this until the day after I bought the car. Disclosue is a huge issue with anything, lies to sell something is or should be illegal. I believe there will be many problems down the road, after the warrenty has worn off, then what? A lot of money to fix things that have been shaken loose.. Not sure about the rest of you but I feel shafted and I'm going to talk with a lawyer to see what our options are. This is being played as "nothing" by Honda..it's an act to not stir things up but it's a bad deal and they need to come forth and take care of this situation now! If they can't fix it, then replace with another new vehicle, no I do not want a used one! They're afraid they are going to lose money on this? They have made a fortune off of us, so come fourh Honda and do the right thing... If anyone knows anything about class action lawsuits, it may be helpful for the rest of us to know as much as we can...
If you live near Indianapolis, don't shop at Honda of Fishers until they make this right!

I don’t own a 2015 CVR, but I do own a 2014 Honda Accord EX with the same Earth Dreams engine. I also don’t have the CVT transmission – so my point is just that my manual tranny \ Earth Dreams combination drives wonderfully. The engine has tremendous power for a 2.4 liter and provides outstanding fuel economy at an actual achieved of over 31 mpg. I have put nearly 35,000 miles on the car in just 19 months and couldn’t be happier.

So clearly the engine is not the concern here, but some combination of low idle speed, CVT transmission, AWD system, etc. But still I expect these CRV’s will see the long service and high mileage that Honda is known for.

That said, Honda should be able to set the system up better, even if they give up one MPG or so.

Welcome Whalen. What we've learned from Honda engineering is that the intermittent problem at hand is caused by a harmonic vibration originating in the frame assembly. The engine is not the issue, and the reliability of the CVT is unquestionable. We've interviewed many CR-V owners that have no issue with the vehicle. Enjoy your Accord EX, a great vehicle.

I really appreciate this board. I was about to buy a new 2015 CRV Touring from a Honda Dealership here in Raleigh but after seeing all the MANY complaints here and on other boards I am definitely not going to do that. A few years back I had a Honda Van that had brake noises and Honda never owned up to that but this seems a bigger deal. And despite the fact they have acknowledged the issue, clearly there is an issue here that I would rather not deal with. I wish you all the best of luck. Maybe time to consider a Subaru?

Ok here is the lowdown. I took my 2015 CRV back the first week, service manager said the vibration was a normal characteristic of the vehicle. After driving a few weeks it was bothering me and I took it back to honda, they double checked and contacted Honda, same thing, a characteristic. Filed a case with CAMVAP (Canadian auto manufacturer vehicle arbitration plan). Get a call from engineer at Honda, now they are aware of the issue and are working on "countermeasures" to lessen the vibration. Had 2 "countermeasures" installed but did nothing. Camvap agreed that all 2015 CRVs have this characteristic so they cannot do anything with my claim. So DO NOT BUY A 2015 CRV. They are a piece of crap.

I too recieved a call from Honda, finally after 5 mons..He even admitted to me that he recieved my message in April..After he hung up I realized that he told me nothing more than they are going to "improve" it. He was very careful in what he had to say.

I did contact a lawyer..he deals in lemon law...all of you should do the same..do it before you get 18,000 mls or...2 yrs ( i think)

I did take it to another Honda location today and he peformed a re-learn on the idle. It did nothig to help..
I would really like to have it fixed and not go through this lawsuit at all but I have to.
I keep hoping Honda will come through.
Mine is a very bad vibration...Honda is the only ones that can't feel it..I have had other ( outside of Honda) mechanics drive the car to see..they all are astounded that Hthey are still selling these cars without disclosure. .They will get sued and all they have to do is make it right.

I can't afford to get another car..and no one will buy this on a personal sell as soon as they test drive it a couple miles.
If these cars don't get fixed correctly, it's bound to cause something to come loose or even cause problems in your body...or worse.
I went through the car wash on Sat and the attendant asked me if that was my car shaking like that for a reason..I said yes, a Honda issue, don't buy their cars and do not buy from Honda of Fishers..You will get get a lot of attention, until they get your money...and you will be lied to.
I still can't believe they have done nothing. ..very sad situation.

Leased a 2015 crv 3 weeks ago. I was so happy with my new suv until today. I was at the passenger seat and when we stop at the stop sign my seat started to vibrate really bad.
I took it for a ride and it keeps doing it. also it vibrates when its parked. I am do disappointed. I love everything else but I don't think that Honda will fix it if they did not do it by now..

Take it in as defective and cancel the lease. Or, exchange it for one that doesn't vibrate. Best of luck to you. 2015 Honda CR-V is the best selling SUV in North America, and rated the highest in quality and customer satisfaction by Edmonds and Kelly Blue Book. That's as good as it gets!

Just bought a 2015 CR-V and am getting some vibration at idle, but more pronounced vibration shacking between 60 - 70 miles / hour. Brought it to the service department the day after the purchase thinking that it may have been a wheel balance / alignment issue. The mechanic test drove it and confirmed the condition. The service manager indicated that there was a service bulletin recommending a software update. This was done, but with no improvement (the same mechanic conducted another test drive). Honda "Technical Service" was called and the condition was acknowledged as an issue with the CVT which Honda has been investigating. Honda claims that there are no safety or equipment issues to be concerned about. I purchased the car based on the reputation of the manufacturer, but am left with an expensive massage chair that, apparently, can't be repaired. This is completely unacceptable and, had I known, I would have certainly gone with a competitor's product. There will be no more Honda's in our future!

Welcome to the world of the CRVibrator. I purchased mine in April and noticed the vibration within 24 hours. I tried to get my 2009 trade-in back from the dealer, but of course that was not an option. I now have 6000 miles on my car and the vibration is getting progressively worse, especially at 70-75 mph. I've taken it in 4 different times and to two different dealerships to have the vibration diagnosed. The service managers act as though I'm the first person who has complained about the vibration. If they even admit they feel it (which most of them don't) they claim it's a normal characteristic of the CRV and that I'm just not used to the CVT transmission or the sensitive steering. If the vibration is "normal", and not a concern, then why has Honda released two different youtube videos addressing the vibration as a top priority, and claiming that they are working on a solution. If it's normal why do they need to fix it Hmmmm? I had the mode 3 software update done in August and it did nothing to help the vibration. I literally hate driving this car, but can't absorb the depreciation on a trade-in at this point. I have driven a dozen 2015 CRV's, all different trims, and they all vibrate. I've also driven a Mazda Cx-5, a Toyota Rav4, and a Subaru Outback and NONE of them vibrate. Don't believe the 5 star reviews and the people that claim that theirs don't have the vibration. One salesman at a dealership did admit to me that all of the 2015's vibrate, but not all people are bothered by it. All I can say is keep complaining, keep making phone calls and post your complaints on as many different sites as possible. We need to keep fighting this fight. If the 2016's are released with no vibration there is a chance that Honda will also fix the 2015's, but at this point I'm not very hopeful.

judy (not verified)    October 6, 2015 - 8:40PM

very unhappy with Honda. Only have the car a month and I too have the same vibration. I bought the 2015 crv because Honda did nothing but brag about how this was the best small crv on the road. I see most of these comments were made back in May of 2015. According to Honda there was already supposed to be a fix. There had better be one, I didn't put out $27,000 for nothing. I will never buy another Honda again if there isn't a fix and hopefully soon My husband owns a Subaru, no vibration, no problems

Veronica (not verified)    October 7, 2015 - 10:38AM

Is it true that Honda is waiting on governent approval to fix the vibration issue? I was told that at my dealership 3 days ago.

Danny (not verified)    October 10, 2015 - 1:00PM

my 2012 Honda CR-V EX-L vibrates when it shifts from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. I have been doing some research for this problem and the fix was a Torque converter replacement. $2000 job. The worst part is the 300 pages of complaints for the same/ similar problem going back to year 2011-2015 . on top of that is the battery dies quickly with little use. leave a door open to long and the car will not start. I installed a group 24 battery and that problem was cured. I have been a Honda owner since 1993 now I have lost hope in Honda as a quality vehicle . they have cut corners to save money but, still charge full price.

I wish I had my 04 CRV back it was as smooth as glass compared to this paint shaker. It wasn't as noticeable at first but with 9,000+ miles on it now it's getting worse not only at idle but at normal road speeds. Having just gotten home from a 500 mile trip the next stop will be the dealer today. Slight has become persistent and very noticeable. How is it they TEST these vehicles and never noticed this before?

Parks McCants    October 19, 2015 - 11:42AM

Welcome Al. You pose a good question. Vehicles test cycle through thousands of miles before being released to the public. Personally, I've test driven 3 2015 CR-V SUVs. one with 10,000+ miles showing on the odometer. While they were not as "smooth as glass,:" they weren't "paint shakers" by any stretch.

Good luck with your dealer. Please keep us posted as to the outcome.

I purchased my CRV 3 months ago and noticed a slight vibration . Placing the truck in neutral or turning the lights will stop the vibration. Honda needs to find a solution to this intermittent problem.

Parks McCants    October 26, 2015 - 4:03PM

In reply to by Regina reyes (not verified)

Welcome Regina. It sounds like you already have. By taking the load off of the motor by placing the transmission in neutral, or turning on the headlights, you change the engine RPM. I believe Honda is working on a solution, however as they've shared with me,the perception of the problem( vibration) as well as the severity and frequency of the vibration varies. Take care.

I just purchased a Honda CRV with the leather trim and I am also have the vibration issue. It occurs when Idleing, at 35 miles an hour and at 65 miles an hour. I purchased the car three weeks ago and I want to return it as it is unbearable to drive ( I am getting Headaches). I have been buying new Hondas since 1994 and have never had an issue with any other cars. I am a Loyal Honda customer and I hope the Honda will look at this and provide an immediate resolution. We basically have a new car that is un-driveable.

2015 Accord LX
Too much vibration stopped and in gear. OK when in park and made worse when a/c is on. Also when coasting from 30 mpg the car loses 6 mph every 5 seconds. There is a point where it lurches as it slows down. It even loses speed coasting on the down slope of a bridge. I do like the handling except for a rough ride. I bumps over bumps like a '84 Chevette. Do not by if you like a quiet, comfortable riding car

Paul Fox (not verified)    October 31, 2015 - 12:39AM

We bought our 2015 one year ago in december. I did not notice the vibration while test driving. Soon after purchase though it became more obvious and annoying……especial for my wife. It is especially embarrassing with guests riding. I feel like we made a bad purchase but otherwise we love the car….I assumed that it was the CTV transmission and that that was just the nature of the beast. I try to ignore it because it is annoying. I do expect mored from Honda……If there was a lawsuit I would sign up in a minute. I hope a fix will soon be coming. Also I did bring the issue up with a service manager at first oil change……he acted like there was nothing to it….

A question for Torquenews : are you going to rest the 2016 Honfa CRV to determine if the 2015 vibration problem has been eliminated with this new model?

Al Schuman (not verified)    November 5, 2015 - 1:23AM

NO, if fact Honda is about to loose a 35 year buyer / owner. My last trip in with the CRV they wouldn't document I'd been there and a email to the salesman went unanswered. I left GM long ago and I can leave Honda as well, when I leave after being taken I don't go back.

I have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline. I boarded with the intention of having a very high quality car since everyone seems to think Honda is so dependable. Within three years I had to replace the backseat pools because they would often break and raise up with the legs flopping, I had to change out my air conditioner and my catalytic converter, all would then 3 years. My wife bought a new 2006 Subaru Tribeca and had it for 10 years and it was only in the shop one time. And had the same problems. Now I'm getting ready to get rid of my Honda Ridgeline and kissing Honda goodbye. I'm buying a 2016 Subaru Outback and I just bought my wife a brand new 2015 Nissan Murano. I drove the Honda CRV 2015 and also felt the vibration. I will say and give them credit, it had plenty of power and it drove exceptionally well. But I would never buy a car that had a vibration like that regardless of whether it was nominal or major.

JOHN SULLIVAN (not verified)    December 1, 2015 - 1:53PM

Like so many of you with 2015 Honda CR-Vs, my CR-V does the same thing(vibrations) in fact if no one is in the passenger seat it too vibrates as well as the windows(opened a crack). Taking back to dealer only enhanced my anger by indicating they know of the problem but Mother Honda hasn't found a fix. We also have a 2013 Accord with the same engine and CVT with no vibrations. Simple harmonic motion which is often given as a cause would leave me to believe the fix is in the engine and CVT mounts.

Parks McCants    December 2, 2015 - 12:11AM

In reply to by JOHN SULLIVAN (not verified)

Welcome John Sullivan. Actually, you may be dead-on. Honda has issued a 19 page service department memo addressing possible fixes for the problem at hand. Give your dealership a call. The bulletin went out in mid November. Good luck.

Christine Greene (not verified)    December 8, 2015 - 1:08PM

My 2015 Honda CRV vibrates a lot now while driving. I was told by Honda it is the
engine and transmission vibrating. The fix now is a software update and a tailgate
damper replacement. My question, how will a tailgate damper cure an engine and
transmission vibration? This is the 3rd CRV I have bought. I loved the other 2 this
one is a big let down.

Parks McCants    December 8, 2015 - 5:35PM

In reply to by Christine Greene (not verified)

Welcome Christine, great question! Vibrations are transferred through the frame and body members of CR-V. The software update will address the engine idle, and mid range (RPM) mapping as the engine interacts with the CVT transmission. Hopefully the harmonic drone associated with a resulting vibration will dissipate. The tailgate related vibration is a secondary issue resulting in a harmonic vibration being transmitted through the frame to your steering wheel, seat, etc. Please keep us posted as to the effectiveness of this proposed vibration resolution. Thank you.
