Elon Musk Responds to Tesla Investors’ Call He Should Work 40 Hours a Week – Says He Shouldn’t be Compelled to Put More Hours at Tesla When He Hasn’t been Paid Since 2018

Elon Musk has responded to calls that he should dedicate a minimum of 40 hours per week to Tesla. Musk expressed his frustration, stating that Tesla hasn’t paid him anything for his work over the past seven years.

Elon Musk is pushing back against requests from some Tesla investors to dedicate at least 40 hours to the electric vehicle manufacturer.

Musk responded to the demands of the Tesla investor group by emphasizing that he has not received any payment for running Tesla since 2018.

Technically, Tesla is legally required to pay Elon Musk; however, the Tesla CEO only receives minimum wage and has earned around $33,000 in recent years, clocking in over 70 hours a week at the EV maker.

Musk was also granted the largest performance-based CEO compensation plan in history, worth $56 billion, for his contributions to Tesla; however, a judge in Delaware revoked these awards due to what she deemed as flawed financial disclosures.

Regarding the recent issue of working 40-hour weeks, this request came from a group of pension fund managers who collectively own 7.9 million Tesla shares, valued at nearly $3 billion.

The group of fund managers sent a letter to Tesla Chairwoman Robyn Denholm, urging the board to require Musk to devote more time to working at Tesla, as the EV maker has experienced two consecutive years of declining vehicle sales.

One might think it is logical for a CEO of a publicly traded company to dedicate 40 hours each week to the organization.

However, a group of Elon Musk's supporters and Tesla investors has come to the defense of the Tesla CEO, arguing that it is unfair to require Musk to work 40 hours at Tesla.

A Tesla fan, who goes by the username “I like Tesla” on X, wrote:

“It's funny we have investors demanding Elon work a certain number of hours per week when we haven't even PAID HIM TO DO SO since 2018. You've got to have some nerve.”

Elon Musk endorsed the idea that he shouldn’t be required to work 40 hours a week at Tesla, given he hasn’t been paid for his work since 2018. Musk replied to I Like Tesla’s post with a simple “Indeed.”

Musk also expressed frustration with this request, adding a “sigh” to his response.

Considering Musk’s multiple statements emphasizing in-person work and hard work, the 40-hour workweek does not seem too unreasonable.

However, looking at the comments, several Tesla investors and Musk fans voiced their support for the Tesla CEO, explaining why he shouldn’t be compelled to work a 40-hour week at the EV maker.

A fellow Tesla investor and prominent online Tesla figure, Zack, writes:

“The double standards they hold you to is wild.”

Another Tesla fan, Rina Tjhen, added:

“Stop being selfish and greedy, people.”

A third Tesla investor, Peter, echoed this sentiment, writing:

“To be honest, there's no amount of money in the world that could satisfy the services you continue to offer to humanity. Much appreciated.”

A fourth Tesla fan, Sabrina, writes…

“There’s not enough Elon to go around. You need to find a way to replicate yourself so there’s enough Elon for everyone.

Seriously, though, you’re working every hour God sends; do you not deserve to have a life too?

You’re not a machine, not yet anyway, and they should pay you for all your hard work. The fact they haven’t already is ridiculous.”

Overall, based on the comments, Tesla fans appear to agree with Elon Musk that he shouldn’t be required to work 40 hours a week at Tesla, especially when the EV maker has not compensated him adequately for his work.

Not either a Tesla fan nor a Musk fan, but geez even I agree that the man should be paid for his time at Tesla before being pressured to give 40hrs per week. Let any of those Investors put in 40hr weeks for free for 2 months and we'd be hearing them shout let alone 7yrs.

Elon has pretty much ruined Tesla's reputation in a lot of places and with a lot of people around the world. He shouldn't work for Tesla at all, he is a liability at this point.
The Tesla automobile could be so much better without the silly ideas like the Cyber " Truck" and the unpredictable servicing of their products. The warranty like their CEO Elon is too flighty and unpredictable. You might get a good one or you might get an automobile that spends more time in the repair shop, and you might be sent a bill when they find some excuse to refuse your warranty coverage!
No thanks Tesla, your reputation is tarnished thanks mostly to Elon. I am quite pleased I chose a different EV that's much better built and reliable with a great dealership and service department. I would have considered a Tesla a few years back until all the Elon silliness!

Those shortselling and bearish on Tesla agree Musk should do whatever he wants with the company brand tied to his name.

If Elon hasn't been paid since 2018, he should do whatever he needs to do so he can finally get paid. It's not up to some idiot so called judge in Delaware (oh yeah, that's that baboon Biden's from.)to stop your pay. You should sue her for your lost wages. Bet she wouldn't do that again. God Bless you Elon!!

Elon is being compensated well with the options he has been granted and exercising them before they expire. In regards to Elon working 40 hours a week for Tesla as CEO, if he doesn't have time to run Tesla, maybe it's time to find a new CEO. Elon himself has chosen to spread himself thin between Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, his new AI company and DOGE. The board should address this issue to shore up Tesla and it growing inventory of vehicles, and global image of Tesla while Elon is CEO

Lol. I don't know who's worse. Elon or his cult? You don't want to work? You get written up. 3 times you're fired. Pretty simple and a lot more fair than the way doge did it.

If he's unhappy, go work somewhere else.

Elon being ceo should be able to work when he feels compelled to do he has never let the company down and I don't think he ever would. Pay him up first and then worry about his time. Go Elon !!

This is a tough one. As an investor myself, the sole purpose of my investment in Tesla is to get a return on that investment, yes?

We have to take DOGE, Starlink, Mars, etc., out of the equation because on paper that doesn’t matter. With 2 down years, it’s understandable why the natives are getting restless.

Personally, my investment was more because of Elon and his brilliance than the car. He’s a winner, and a rocket scientist to boot!

Now for the other side of the story… I wholeheartedly believe in Elon Musk and everything that he does. The fact that he loves our country so much and cares about the people the way he does, leaves my family in awe. The man puts in a gazillion hours a week doing remarkable things and he gets nothing but crap tossed his way. We would literally support Elon to Mars and back; at this point, there’s very little that would stifle our support for him.

But the investment is the investment, and people are just concerned about their finances. WHEN Tesla comes back from the fire, smoke and ashes, it’s going to return to being one of the most remarkable companies ever. Just show us a plan we can hold onto and then take the rest of the year off.

Richest man in the world, somehow thinks we believe he doesn't get compensation. In other news, world's most prolific porn star believes in abstinence.

Elon chose to not get paid, that's a him problem.

And if he wants his employees to work in person but won't do the same, why even keep him around?

He's not an exceptionally gifted engineer, has has done more harm than good in the last 2 years.

The company would be better off without him and sales would recover.

Cloud (not verified)    May 31, 2025 - 9:25PM

I think people are missing the real issue here, which is the fact that Tesla is running without a full-time CEO. They may see this as harmful to the company even though we know the REAL reason for Tesla's decline. This is what happens when someone who represents a company takes sides in politics.

Wanda Lee (not verified)    May 31, 2025 - 9:27PM

Elon was lauded, applauded and treated like the gift that he is to us...UNTIL...he aligned himself with Conservative America! What a CRAZY coincidence!!
Shame on the "takers" - Jealous much??!

We Americans and the human race as a whole , are so fortunate and blessed by God to have a genius like Mr. Elon Musk with us . We should appreciate and make sure that he remains healthy and have a long life so that he can help humanity’s survival . Some people are so destructive by nature and have no survival sense that they don’t care what happens to them as long as they can satisfy their inner destructive instincts . Maybe they should not take their paychecks And bonuses and reimburse their pay for the past six years and work for free as many hours as Mr. musk works plus donate their precious time for the good of the nation and the world. He is a patriot and I pray to God to bless him.

Elon musk is whining about no pay what about the billions he rakes in yearly in stock
So his performance and interaction with Tesla and so forth increases
In my book he’s being compensated more than he’s actually worth

Elon is a supremely Intelligent high Functioning human. He multitasks better than anyone ever noted in history. He dedicated his time to his companies sometimes 24/7 for however long it takes for him to put loyal trusted individuals in place to take care of each business as he moves around.
Elon is also Compassionate and Caring. He has and IS Taking care of Communities all around the world that do not have resources to help them and he doesn't do it for accolades. EVERYONE receives the actual aid and it is Not taken by hundreds of Bureaucrats before it can reach them. He is a Man of Honor and a man of his Word.
Democrats have Cancelled him and encouraged the destruction and total downfall simply because he was able follow the data and money that proved the culprits and their corruption. The Democrats campaign began the moment they knew he would find them and that was two years ago. They did it out of fear.
Look around you. How many Billionaires do you see Living their lives simply. All of the others have Yachts, Mansions and flash their money flaunting themselves without humility..
What Could our world actually be like if we could have more just like him?
Elon is far from perfect. He is flawed. He is human. This Entire World would be LUCKY if there could be more like him.

Kind of circled here if Musk haven’t got paid for his work at Tesla yet why he opened another 3 or 4 companies and bought twitter now X without money in his pocket even went for job at DOGE without pay he should have applied at McDonald’s because he is literally broke and still stand on first 5 of worlds richest person I am confused here for hard work and 40 hour work requirement here

Sean (not verified)    June 1, 2025 - 1:31AM

It’s interesting he claims he hasn’t been paid since 2018, yet he fails to think that using Tesla as collateral to secure the billions in bank loans he needed to acquire Twitter isn’t some kind of compensation. While it may not be a paycheque he gets deposited into his chequing account every other week, he has absolutely wrung every possible cent out of that company he could.

Andrew (not verified)    June 1, 2025 - 3:03AM

Imagine SpaceX and Boring demanding 40 hours a week as well 😂😂 the investors should sue the government of delaware for that fraud of a judge withholding his pay package just because a dude with 12 shares sued. I have 100 shares, could I veto his action?

The board went to shareholders for a second time requesting the $72b pay package, and once again the package was approved by shareholders like me (100 shares lol). The commie judge said it was "too much money", and she didn't care about the second vote. So, if the Tesla investors want to get 40 hour work weeks out of him, they should go up to bat for him and give him the money he's earned- the money he was promised for bringing Tesla to its meteoric success. The package that would've been $0 if he wasn't able to 100x the company. Oh well, hope they see this post I guess.

David Stein (not verified)    June 1, 2025 - 4:50AM

"All the 2018 package does is allow Elon Musk to purchase 303,960,630 shares of Tesla stock at an exercise price of $23.34 per share from the company.

On a cash basis, it doesn't cost the company anything to "pay" him. Counterintuitively, the company's cash balance would increase by $7.1 billion if he exercised the options, allowing the company to invest more and fortify its balance sheet." - Whole Mars Catalog

All this stock compensation has already been accounted for by Tesla. Just before Tesla went public (IPO), Elon owned 36% of the company. If he exercised all of them, he would have to PAY $7.1 BILLION in cash to Tesla, which goes straight to the balance sheet. He is then REQUIRED to hold those shares for FIVE YEARS before he can sell them. All they give him is returning voting control to steer Tesla to "accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy." If he elects to sell some of those shares in five years, it doesn't cost Tesla a penny. It costs the investors that buy those shares. Historically he has only sold shares when he absolutely needed to (like to save Free Speech on the Internet). Otherwise, he's always borrowed money for living expenses, using the shares as collateral. He has NEVER taken a salary, can you say the same?

Brian (not verified)    June 1, 2025 - 7:05AM

If they want him to be there more because he's the CEO, then forget the minimum wage, pay him what a CEO is suppose to get paid. Plus, it's his company to do with as he sees fit! If he's still majority owner, then they can't make him do anything!
