Elon Musk Forced to Explain Why Tesla Did Not Pay Any Federal Taxes for 5 Years Despite Making $6.7 Billion in Profits – Musk Says, “Tesla Losses Were High for Many Years, So Carry Forward”

Elon Musk has found himself in a controversy after he said, “Tax reform is needed. Too many loopholes.” People are criticizing Musk, saying Tesla hasn’t paid any federal taxes for 6 out of the past 7 years. However, Musk says there is an explanation.

Elon Musk’s call to overhaul the tax code has drawn criticism, with some calling Musk a hypocrite, pointing to Tesla’s tax history.

Musk started the entire controversy when he posted on X simply writing…

“Tax reform is needed. Too many loopholes.”

In response, an X user, Melanie D'Arrigo, responded to Musk, saying Tesla did not pay Taxes in 2024 and for five consecutive years spanning from 2018 to 2022.

Melanie writes…

“Tesla paid $0 in federal income tax in 2024.

2022: $0

2021: $0

2020: $0

2019: $0

2018: $0

Tesla reported $6.7 billion in profit in those years.”

Not counting a $48 million tax bill in 2023, Tesla has basically not paid any federal taxes for the past 7 years.

What’s interesting here is that in the 7 years from 2018 to 2024, Tesla’s cash reserves have grown from $3 billion to $37 billion.

Out of this total, $7 billion came from two capital raises Tesla conducted in 2019 and 2020. $2 billion in 2019 and $5 billion in 2020.

However, the remaining $27 billion increase in Tesla’s cash reserves was generated overwhelmingly from running the business.

Even more interesting, from 2018 to 2024, Tesla has earned a little more than $10 billion from selling regulatory credits.

These are credits that Tesla earns for making and selling electric vehicles. Tesla then sells these credits to other automakers who are unable to meet government-mandated zero-emission vehicle sales targets.

However, despite racking in $27 billion dollars from the business and $10 billion of that specifically coming from government-mandated programs, in the past 7 years, Tesla has only paid $48 million in federal taxes.

And as pointed out by Melanie, in 6 out of the 7 years, including the most recent year, Tesla has paid $0 in federal taxes.

Pointing to Tesla’s tax avoidance history, people are calling Musk a hypocrite for saying there are too many loopholes in the tax code.

However, Musk says there is a perfectly good explanation for Tesla’s low federal tax payments. Musk says despite Tesla making a profit for the past 7 years, the EV maker has also lost a lot of money in prior years.

Musk says Tesla has been able to carry forward the losses in previous years to avoid paying taxes on the profitable years.

Elon also adds that not all of Tesla’s profits have come from the US.

Musk writes…

“Yeah. Tesla losses were high for many years, so carry forward.

The supermajority of profit is from production and sales overseas, not the US.

But the point I am making IS that we need tax reform!”

Given the controversy is surrounding tax loopholes, Musk has chosen an interesting defense. However, please let me know what you think in the comments. Share your ideas by clicking the “Add new comment” button below. Also, visit our site, torquenews.com/Tesla, regularly for the latest updates.

It's called 'gaming the system'. Those whom write the rules so that they can 'game' it. Basically, legal criminals, as Bugsey Siegel would explain.

I'm all for Trump but I bet now that Elon Musk has got his hands into the federal government he won't pay taxes for another 15 years or so. Yes tax reform is needed! The rich get richer but me being a blue collared worker I suffer the butt end of the joke. I'm a single income family of four my wife went through massive cancer and she is unable to work but she cannot even get Social Security. In the meantime Elon Musk enjoys his life of luxury.

I just had to set up a payment plan with the IRS to pay my taxes for 2024. While this unelected scumbag runs amok through the Treasury and other government agencies. When will members of the GOP in the House and Senate grow backbones and rein in this clown and the convicted felon president?

How does Melanie know what Tesla paid or didn’t pay without see the tax returns and supporting details? More ignorance and propaganda. Have the legislators change the tax code. Don’t blame those who follow it.

Thanks for jumping on the MSM bandwagon so that I knew to block you from my news feed. Do you have purple hair, Melanie?

He knows that taxes are voluntary and anyone that's been on the internet knows that taxes are voluntary and the irs director himself tells you that taxes are voluntary 3 times in 2 minutes. (Just search in youtube for "Steven Miller IRS Director admits taxes are voluntary and look for the video under 3 minutes long)

Anyone with a business can expense down to zero tax. The wealthy know this and so should you.

When a billionaire says we need tax reform, what he means is that we need more loopholes for his activities and that peasants should pay more.

Alex (not verified)    February 10, 2025 - 10:33AM

Soo if he is using the tax loopholes he is not supposed to suggest that tax reform is needed and just quietly keep abusing the system? Would that be better? :)

Imo companies just do what is legally possible to increase their profit margins, if those actions are fishy, new laws are needed :) and it's a good thing when someone points it out regardless if they are using the loopholes

Maybe this is the type of tax reform he's talking about? As far as I know- and I'm assuming Tesla legally avoided paying taxes- they worked the tax code so they could avoid paying these taxes legally.

When was the last time anyone voluntarily paid extra taxes? Didn't they pay what the law requires? I haven't seen any articles about Tesla committing tax fraud.

How the living f... can Musk claim losses from everywhere allows his company to pay ZERO taxes. Why doesn't the richest man in the world take oh just say $250,000,000 and pay off his tax debt to the country he immigrated to..oh I forgot he payed his debt to the other tax evader DJT...never mind

Rob (not verified)    February 10, 2025 - 10:53AM

Yeah so do any other business owners get to carry over their losses or is it just the biggest tax cheats in the country. This is the opposite of meritocracy its the federal government deciding who wins.

Ellon Musk is not only a hypocrite; he is also an opportunist who maintains public and private ties to the Chinese Communist Party. He will add to the downfall of Donald Trump.

John Hackley (not verified)    February 10, 2025 - 12:33PM

Yeah, it was Elon who wrote the tax code over the last 250 years. Everyone knows that. It's definitely his fault that abiding by it makes lunatics even nuttier.

It is extremely easy to comment and quickly judge, based on just some data.
Please research the previous 7 years as well, so we can put it in a different context.
We are not all tax attorneys or professionals, so we don't know the tax laws, where all the profits are coming t, as the company conducts business all over the world, does the article states if taxes in other countries are being paid and how much?
Too easy, too quick to judge and point fingers without due diligence....
