Subaru’s Least Stolen New Model - Car Thieves Won’t Touch This SUV

There are lists of the most stolen vehicles in America, but which models do car thieves stay away from? One Subaru SUV stands out among the least stolen new models.

The Subaru Forester and Impreza WRX are among the most stolen new models, but which Subaru vehicle do car thieves shy away from

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released a list of the most stolen cars in the Denver, Colorado metro area, and two Subaru models are hot targets. The 2002-2005 Subaru Forester (#9) and 2002-2005 Subaru Impreza WRX (#10) make the top-10 most stolen cars list.

The older Forester compact SUV and WRX performance car are targeted by car thieves because they are highly desirable, becoming collector cars and wanted for parts.

This year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released the vehicles with the highest claim frequencies for whole-vehicle theft for the 2020-2022 model years. Two Dodge muscle cars, the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and Dodge Charger HEMI, once again top the list.

But which new Subaru model do car thieves stay away from?

The Subaru Ascent is one of the safest and least likely to be stolen. The 2020-2022 Ascent is among the vehicles with the lowest claim frequencies for whole-vehicle theft at 15 claims (per 100 average). Other midsize SUVs with low vehicle theft are the Volvo XC60 (15), Chevrolet Traverse 4WD (12), and the GMC Acadia 4WD (7).

The IIHS says, "By looking at claims per insured vehicle year, HLDI's theft reports allow people to compare the relative risk of each vehicle. In contrast, other most-stolen-vehicle lists report raw numbers of thefts and are therefore dominated by the most common vehicles on the road."

To isolate whole-vehicle claims, HLDI compared the amounts paid for total losses under collision coverage, generally the vehicle's residual value, to payments associated with each theft claim. Theft claims were considered to represent whole-vehicle thefts when the amount was around the same as expected for a total loss under collision coverage for the exact vehicle of the same age.

If you want a newer 3-Row SUV that car thieves stay away from, the 2020-2022 Subaru Ascent family hauler is a good choice. And the insurance rates will be cheaper.
