Which new compact SUVs have the most room and comfort inside? A recent study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) says the 2021 Subaru Forester and 2021 Subaru Crosstrek rank as one of the seven best compact SUVs. The Global Automotive Trends Report reveals car interiors are number three on the global automotive trends list for 2021. Compact SUV shoppers want a roomy, comfortable cabin.
Consumer Reports doesn't drive a car for a week to find out the best models, they buy and test its own vehicles, and they "measure exactly how much cargo can fit in the back, exactly how roomy the driver's seat feels, and exactly how easy it is to get in and out of the front and rear seats."
The seven best compact SUVs for roominess and comfort
The models are ranked in order of roominess, comfort, and ease of access; all score high in reliability, road-test scores, and safety features. The 2021 Honda CR-V ranks number one, followed by the 2021 Subaru Forester, 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, Toyota RAV4, 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, Lexus NX, and Mazda CX-5.
CR says the number two scoring 2021 Subaru Forester "has the interior space and cargo room of a midsized SUV with compact SUV fuel economy." With the second-row rear seats up, the Forester has 35.4 cubic feet of cargo space, less than the CR-V's 39.2 cubic feet. Going with the Honda CR-V Touring trim lowers that figure to 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space.
However, with the seats folded flat, the Forester offers an ample 76.1 cubic feet of cargo space, beating every other compact SUV in the class. CR-V is next, with a maximum cargo space of 75.8 cubic feet. CR says, "It's easy to get into the comfortable front seats, and the rear seat room is particularly generous and easy to get into as well."
Another Subaru makes CR's roomiest and most comfortable compact SUV list. The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is rated number five best because of its "generous room" and fuel economy (30 mpg overall.) CR adds, "It's easy to get in and out, and there's plenty of room for four adults to travel in comfort."
How much cargo room does the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek have?
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek measures 20.8 cubic feet with the seats up and 55.3 cubes with the rear seats folded flat. The Crosstrek also comes standard with all-wheel-drive.
Compact SUV shoppers want a comfortable and roomy cabin. The 2021 Subaru Forester and 2021 Subaru Crosstrek rank high in the two all-wheel-drive vehicles owned by Consumer Reports.
