The Next-Gen Subaru Baja You Want Now

The next-generation Subaru Baja pickup is likely the most wanted new Subaru vehicle ever. Here are renderings of what it could look like if Subaru builds one. Would you buy this new Subaru pickup?

Would you like to see a next-generation Subaru Baja pickup?

If you are like many Subaru enthusiasts, the most wanted new Subaru model not in the lineup now is the Baja pickup. This unique vehicle, produced from 2002 to 2006, pioneered the crossover pickup segment. Unfortunately, it didn't last.

Can you imagine what it would have evolved into today?

I found a rendering from Instagram user f440ffroad, which is the best I've seen of what it may have looked like if it had not been discontinued. I've included a few of the pics throughout.

Is it possible that Subaru Corporation will design and offer customers a new Baja pickup again

Anything is possible, but will it happen?

Yes, the possibility is real. The main reason is that Subaru of America (SOA) still has patent rights to the Baja pickup name. It's Subaru of America, not Subaru Corporation. This means that SOA still wants to bring it back, and they still need to convince Subaru's chief decision-makers in Japan that they need to do it.

Subaru still holds the patent rights.

I wrote in my report here that while scouring the U.S. patent office website, I found an interesting tidbit of information. Subaru of America still holds the patent for the name BAJA. Subaru initially filed for the Baja patent in December 2002. Subaru renewed the patent name in June 2013 and continues to hold it.

The Baja patent is live and registered by Subaru of America, not Subaru Corporation. This tells me Subaru of America still hopes Subaru Corporation will return the Baja pickup to its lineup sometime in the future.

It's a hope, not a guarantee.

Like many of you, the Baja pickup is the Subaru model I want to see revived. Subaru of America does, too. Many Subaru enthusiasts would like the Baja revised, too.

However, Subaru of America has not renewed the BRAT name, which is another small Subaru vehicle that was discontinued. Subaru of America abandoned that name in 2003 and did not renew it. But they haven't given up on the Baja.

Enthusiasts who want to see a new Subaru Baja pickup in the Japanese automaker's all-wheel-drive lineup still have hope.

Subaru Baja rear view

It doesn't cost anything to dream.

I would like to see the Baja pickup with a 2.5-liter Boxer engine, and a Baja Wilderness trim level with rugged upgrades over the standard model. Imagine a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine, enhanced ground clearance, and off-road tires.

Both models would sell well and be a hit in the American market. The all-new next-gen Baja pickup would have to be priced in the $35,000 -$40,000 price range to be profitable for the Japanese automaker.

They have to pay for R&D, and Subaru would have to be able to design and manufacture the new Baja pickup on a new assembly line somewhere—hopefully, the U.S. plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

While it would take a few years for Subaru to recoup its investment, the potential for the new Baja pickup to be an immediate success is high.

It's Your Turn.

What are your thoughts on the potential return of the Baja pickup? Do you think it would be a successful addition to Subaru's lineup?

I currently have a 2018 CROSSTREK. I've always liked the sporty rugged look of it but wished it had better cargo carrying ability and towing capacity. I would be the first to buy a BAJA if it looked like this and had those abilities. Sign me up for one please.

If Subaru builds the vehicle that you're showing in this article I would buy one as soon as they are available !
My plan is to purchase a new SUV or smaller truck this Spring.
I have been looking at Toyota, Nissan and GM options and have been waiting to find out if Subaru was actually going to follow thru w/this new Baja.

I drive a Ford lightning and have a Subaru Outback.
I would be very interested in the new Subaru pickup to replace our Outback it’s a 2018 and in perfect condition and we have not been interested in selling it for any other reason.

I currently have a Subaru Outback which I love. I feel very safe in this car. Btu, sometimes I wNt something just a bit bigger with more load capacity. Absolutely I would buy a BAJA if they made them again!

I want one NOW! Great competitor for the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz and I would much prefer the Subaru and I gotta believe I'm not the only one!

I currently own a 2003 subaru baja with over 300k miles. I would buy the new baja in a N ew York minute. Besides, I live in Alaska and we lots of subarus here.

I’d LOVE to own a Baja - 2.5 L naturally aspirated with a premium package (I don’t off-road) with a manual shift if possible. I’m working on my 7th Subi in my life now. That would be the ultimate traveling vehicle for a retired old coot !! 😂😂😂

I hope they bring the Baja back! I have owned two Subaru Outbacks and would definitely buy a Baja if brought back as rendered here. These are great vehicles and I believe Subaru would do very well in this segment. The time is right!!

Yes please Subaru!! It would be nice if it would also tow a decent amount and come with a hybrid option and PHEV like the Toyota Rav 4.

Steve (not verified)    December 2, 2024 - 10:05AM

Yes absolutely I would buy one.

Not everyone wants a vehicle the size of a small truck to have as a Ute, but it seems car manufacturers are an ignorant bunch of people.
Perhaps it's time car companies were run by AI robots as the humans aren't making much of a good fist of it these days.
much of a job

Jason Zarn (not verified)    December 2, 2024 - 10:24AM

Yes, I would definitely buy a new Baja as long as it looks like the drawings or very similar and they don't blah it up.

Steve (not verified)    December 2, 2024 - 11:02AM

I would be very interested in having the Baja resurrected. Having a smaller 4 wheel drive pickup here in Maine would be an ideal vehicle for my family.

I certainly would be interested in the “Baja Truck” concept. At the age of 76 and still very active I could really use a vehicle like this. I hate to haul building supplies and equipment in my 2018 Forester Touring. It’s too nice to get dirty. My wife has a 2003 Chevy Avalanche that is very versatile but it’s a huge vehicle that drinks alot of fuel so the Baja would fit right in our “fleet”. ( I have a 1935 Ford, my wife has a 1923 Ford hot rod truck). Bring it on!!!

From Canada here.

Would love to see this, if offered with a manual transmission. Currently driving my first Automatic in over 15 years and not enjoying driving anymore. I keep exploring for low mileage 2018 foresters with a manual gearbox.
But if this vehicle were to become available in a manual within the next 3 to 5 years, would definitely purchase new.

I currently own a 2019 Outback with the 3.6 V6.
I am patiently waiting for a small Subaru pickup.
When you make them available, I will be one of the first to purchase one.
COME ON SUBARU...

Ray (not verified)    December 2, 2024 - 4:18PM

As an owner of a Subaru for 7 years I have found it to be the most reliable car I have owned in my 80 years on this planet. That said I would ideally welcome a Subaru Ute of this size and calibre to see me through to my motoring retirement. I hope Subaru will approve and commit to this exciting build.

I totally agree that there is room in my garage for one, if it looks like the one shown in the article. I hope they bring it to the US market quickly.

PS - The 2026 Outback is also looking like a winner.

I am on disability and cannot afford a decent vehicle. If u ever do a pro Bono so to speak, I so need this truck and would love to advertise it for u. I love Subaru more than any other vehicle and have dreamed of owning a Subaru truck. I pray someday, somehow I will get (or be chosen to receive as a gift) a reliable Subaru. Thank u for your time and thank for your devotion to the safety of the people who drive or ride in vehicles. God bless each of u richly.

Adrienne (not verified)    December 3, 2024 - 8:42PM

I love my Forester and will buy a new one. My husband loves his truck. If Subaru makes a new Baja, we will be a Subaru family.
