The 4 New Subaru Models Coming This Year And It Won’t Include A Baja Pickup

What new Subaru models can customers expect in 2024? Four new model upgrades are planned, and a new Subaru Baja pickup is not one of them. Here is what's coming for customers.

The question I get the most from Subaru customers is: Will Subaru offer a new Baja pickup this year? The answer is no. Subaru is not releasing a new Baja or Brat pickup. At least not anytime soon.

Why doesn't Subaru produce another pickup?

Subaru is concentrating on its existing lineup and new hybrid and EV models that will be coming in the next five years. The Baja pickup is a pipe dream for many Subaru enthusiasts, including myself. I would like to see Subaru of America offer a new midsize pickup, but I'm not at the helm in making those decisions.

Let's look at Subaru Brat and Baja sales to see if it was a good model for the Japanese automaker.

The Subaru BRAT, short for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter, was a pickup truck produced by Subaru from 1978 to 1994 but sold in the U.S. until 1988.

  • 1977 1,353
  • 1978 22,945
  • 1979 23,441
  • 1980 12,003
  • 1981 5,553
  • 1982 6,909
  • 1983 5,897
  • 1984 4,840
  • 1985 4,075
  • 1986 4,142
  • 1987 1,274
  • 1988 12

Total BRAT U.S. annual sales 105,053

The Subaru Baja was a sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Subaru from 2003 to 2006. It was based on the Subaru Legacy Outback but had a unique pickup bed design. Subaru's Outback wagon heavily influenced the Baja's design, but it had an open bed in the rear, similar to a pickup truck.

Baja sales by year

  • 2005 - 6,239
  • 2006 - 5,241
  • 2007 - 1,127
  • 2008 - 2

Total BAJA U.S. annual sales: 12,609

As you can see from the sales figures, the BRAT and BAJA took off in the first two years and then dropped significantly. But from what I've seen with pickup sales in the U.S., a larger midsize Subaru Baja pickup could be a viable new offering. But it's a moot point for now.

Let's look at the four new models we know are coming soon.

What Is Subaru's Next New Model And When Will Orders Open?

The 2025 Subaru Forester compact SUV is next up for Subaru customers. Orders for the remodeled Forester should open up in mid-to-late April. It is expected to arrive at Subaru retailers in May or June 2024. Subaru of America has yet to announce pricing, so I will update you as soon as it's announced.

When will the 2025 Forester Hybrid Be Available?

Subaru has confirmed that a next-generation Forester Hybrid will be available a year from now. So, I would say about May or June 2025 for the 2026 model year hybrid.

When will the 2025 Forester Wilderness arrive?

The 2025 Subaru Forester Wilderness is a carry-over model with no changes. The rugged, outdoor-themed 2025 Forester Wilderness will be identical to the 2024 Forester Wilderness. So, there is no advantage for customers to wait. The next-generation Forester Wilderness is still one year away.

Will The 2025 Subaru Outback Get Any Changes?

Sources close to Subaru tell me that the Outback midsize SUV won't be redesigned until 2026. You can read my story here.

An all-new Outback Hybrid is also on the drawing board. Forester is the first Hybrid model, so I would say look for an Outback Hybrid trim level one year later in 2027.

This year, the 2024 WRX will be offered in a new trim level, the WRX TR (Tuner Ready) model. This trim has a manual transmission and, for the first time, EyeSight driver assist technology. Stay tuned to see how performance enthusiasts like the new WRX TR.

The 2024 WRX has five trim levels: Base, Premium, WRX TR, Limited, and GT.

The 2024 WRX 6-speed manual trim level starts at $33,855. The WRX Premium 6-speed manual is $35,755, The WRX Premium with Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) is $37,105, the WRX Limited 6-speed manual is $40,135, the WRX Limited SPT is $41,685, the all-new WRX TR 6-speed manual is $42,775, and WRX GT SPT is $45,335. Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,120).

The 2024 Subaru BRZ tS is a new trim level for the sport coupe. This new BRZ trim also has a manual transmission and, for the first time, EyeSight driver assist technology.

What's the price of the 2024 BRZ?

The BRZ Premium with a 6-speed manual gearbox has a starting price of $31,315. BRZ Limited (6-speed manual) has a starting MSRP of $33,815. The Limited with an automatic transmission starts at $34,765. The new BRZ tS MSRP starts at $36,465. Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,120).

In year two, the 2024 Solterra gets added upgrades. Subaru typically doesn't give a year-two model many improvements, but not so in the 2024 Solterra.

For the 2024 Subaru Solterra, three new upgrades have been announced.

1. Solterra has improved charging performance. Subaru gives the 2024 Solterra faster charging performance, a significant improvement.

2. Solterra now has a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that charges from 10 percent to 80 percent as quickly as 35 minutes. A state of charge indicator displays the estimated time to 80 percent or 100 percent.

3. Solterra gets a redesigned steering wheel. The second upgrade is the Solterra's newly redesigned steering wheel with regenerative braking force paddle switches.

New EyeSight capability

Subaru's EyeSight just improved—the 2024 Solterra debuts EyeSight with advanced driver-assistance features. The Solterra is the only Subaru model with improved EyeSight safety technology.

What is the 2024 Solterra pricing?

There was no Solterra price increase, but dealer fees increased by $120 for all Solterra trims.

The 2024 Solterra has three trim levels: Premium, Limited, and Touring. The Solterra Premium trim starts at $46,340. The Limited trim carries a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price of $49,840. The top-of-the-line Touring trim is priced at $53,340. Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,345).

When will the 2024 Subaru Solterra arrive in U.S. showrooms?

The newly updated 2024 Subaru Solterra EV will begin arriving at retailers nationwide in late spring 2024. Stay tuned.

Wait, don't leave yet. We want to hear from you now.

I have a 2018 legacy premium I really like it that's got everything on it and I'm curious about the new one that's coming out that's going to compete with a Toyota crown and it's raised and all you can send me some information about that when it's coming out thank you

I have a Red 2005 Baja Turbo with Stick shift. I get offers all the time to buy it. It take me where I need to go. Almost ever time I take it in for an oil change, they what to know it I want to sell it, because they have people looking to buy one. I get inquires all the time because I'm the only one in a City of 700,000 that has one like mine. I wish Subaru would Make New ones alone with a wilderness model. There is nothing like it on the market today.

I had an opportunity to purchase a new BAJA years ago but passed on it as it didn't have a manual transmission.
I say bring it back! Make it a hybrid.

You say that "Orders for the remodeled Forester should open up in mid-to-late April." Subaru has already opened orders. Anyone can order a brand new 2025 Subaru Forester right now/anytime.
You also say "Subaru of America has yet to announce pricing, so I will update you as soon as it's announced." Subaru has already announced pricing on the 2025 Forester. You can find it a variety of places online via a quick Google.

I would love to see Subrau add Brat or Baja back in their line. I only drive Subrau and have always wanted a truck. When one comes up for sale it's scooped up really fast.

Instead of making a bunch of Wilderness versions, Subaru needs to focus on Hybrid options. It’s a shame that Subaru doesn’t have a single Hybrid model.

I would LOVE Subaru to make a pickup truck. I keep eyeballing trucks that are available but having been a staunch Subaru supporter since 2016 (I'm on my 4th Crosstrek lease, and had an Impreza to start with) and just know that I would really dig it if they offered a truck.
