I Have A New Chevy Silverado, and This Thing Says ‘Buckle to Shift,’ I Have to Buckle My Seat Belt in Order to Shift Out of Park

You know what Rico is talking about if you own a new Chevrolet Silverado. He can't move the gear shifter out of Park until he buckles his seat belt. Are automakers taking safety too far? Here is what Rico says. What do you think of the new safety tech?

Are automakers like Chevrolet taking this safety thing too far?

If you own a newer General Motors vehicle like the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, you know that you have to buckle up your seat belt before you can shift the truck out of the Park position on the gear shift lever.

General Motors has put the new feature on many of its vehicles, and the Silverado is the next in the automaker's lineup to get it. But many owners don't like it. Rico Watkins is one of them.

As Rico Watkins (@ricowatkins215) sits in the driver's seat of a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, he shows how he can't shift the gear lever in the TikTok video.

Rico tries to move the shift lever repeatedly, but the gear shift lever will not engage.

Rico says, "My brand new 2024 Chevy Silverado truck has a message on the dash. It says I have to buckle the seat belt in order to shift out of Park. How crazy is that? "It's insane."

He turns in the seat, grabs the belt buckle, pulls it over his lap, and buckles it.

"All right, let's see what we got. Welcome to seatbelt. There you go. Now I can drive the truck. It's insane."

While Watkins may have been surprised by this feature, it is something that General Motors said they would implement in their cars and trucks starting with the 2021 model year.

Safety features like the new "Buckle To Drive," as GM calls it, are becoming more common on new vehicles like the Silverado pickup.

More new safety tech is coming that customers may find suspicious.

I recently reported that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) strongly encourages automakers to adopt another new technology. Louder seat belt chimes. Yes, they will get more annoying. Check out my report here.

The IIHS, a non-profit organization that evaluates vehicle safety, works to reduce the number of injuries, deaths, and property damage from car crashes. However, to get the highest IIHS test scores, automakers must meet the new safety tech standards.

The louder seat belt chimes are its next target.

The IIHS says, "Automakers have moved quickly to install louder, more persistent seat belt reminders since we began rating the features in 2022."

A look at recent posts on Reddit reveals you don't like the new longer and louder 2024 Crosstrek seat belt warning reminder.

"Hi all, I get that the warning chime is necessary, and I don't want to turn it off… but wow, it's loud! Has anyone found a way to turn it down?"

Another reader writes,

"Yeah, the first time I heard it while checking my parking placement, I almost hit the gas."

It's so annoying that many on Reddit are asking how to turn off the seat belt warning chime. One customer had the front passenger seatbelt warning go off, and no one was sitting in the seat.

"I don't know how it happened, but the passenger seatbelt chime started to go off when I drove. There's no person in the passenger seat. It's driving me nuts. How do I disable it in a 2024 Crosstrek?"

Louder and longer seat belt warnings like the "Buckle To Drive" feature from GM are coming to more and more vehicles.

Expanding Buckle To Drive

General Motors initially launched the Buckle to Drive feature for select 2021 Chevrolet models. These vehicles included the Chevrolet Traverse, Chevrolet Malibu, and Chevrolet Colorado.

Now, Buckle to Drive will be expanded to the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer, Cadillac CT4, Cadillac CT5, and several others.

GM says the feature is becoming standard on all its full-size trucks and SUVs. Chevrolet has planned a wider implementation for 2025 at Chevy dealers.

Even though the louder seat belt chimes and Buckle to Drive features are annoying, they save lives, according to the IIHS.

The IIHS report says that failure to buckle up significantly affects crash deaths. In 2022, about 92% of front-seat occupants and 82% of rear-seat occupants were belted in the government's on-road observational survey of seat belt use.

But a much smaller percentage of the vehicle occupants killed in crashes — half of those in the front seat and a quarter of those in the back — were belted during the crashes that killed them.

An IIHS study found that a persistent reminder was much more effective at getting part-time users to buckle up than a minimal reminder and just as effective as a speed-limiting interlock that kept the vehicle speed under 15 mph unless the driver was buckled in.

The IIHS says," Automakers can boost a vehicle's performance in this test with just some small software changes," IIHS President David Harkey said. "These easy tweaks can have a big impact on safety."

Unfortunately, louder and longer seat belt warnings and Buckle to Drive features on the Chevrolet Silverado are here to stay because automakers want to get better safety ratings from the IIHS.

Seat belt chime ( overkill) I'll just keep my 2020 Sierra plus it has a 6. 2, You Can't get that anymore either.Wake up GM and going total electric isn't going to work either

A little annoying will be tolerated, but excessive annoyance will result in people bypassing the systems. People can leave the belt buckled all the time and just sit on top of it and people will find ways to remove or bypass the buzzer. The trick is to be just annoying enough that people won’t bother with bypassing… For the record, I almost always wear my seatbelt unless I’m just moving the vehicles around on my own property.

Easy solution. Go to an auto supply store and purchase a set of the male buckles and put them into the seatbelt receiver....unless you prefer wearing seatbelts.

On one hand I understand why it is needed. Too many idiots don't wear their seat belt, get into an accident and get seriously injured or die, or worse, lose control the vehicle after a collision and then hit other people that weren't in the initial collision.
On the other hand, after working in the automotive industry from sales, service and auto-body, as well as a valet, it is annoying and troublesome to have to click the seat belt.
Farmers and other industries need that quick in and out as well, and for someone to click the seat belt and then sit in the seat makes it a higher probability that they will get in the car for a regular road driving situation and not put theor seat belt on properly because the buckle is already connected and they are sitting on the belt.

Why not go back to the automatic sliding belts?

I can't wait for the breathalyzer equipped cars to roll off the lines, and sit on dealership lots because no one will buy them. Just put those cats next to all of the EVs that aren't selling.

Way to go over reaching government, you've just hurt the automobile industry even more with nonsense mandates.

This ‘tech’ was tried in 1974. Absolutely failed with so many problems. Good luck on reliability and longevity to the system. I use my seatbelt, so not a problem for me, but if it becomes faulty…. I would probably be looking for an older vehicle…

The buckle to drive feature is extremely annoying!! Wait until you try to back up and hook up to trailer!!!
I think this "feature" is definitely going too far

atleast yours runs mine has been in the shop with transmission issues with no end in site for the last 4 months, no answers no real communication, chevy has definitely lost a customer for life and your warranty dept get a minus 10 out of 10 for customer service or lack of same

All 1974 model year vehicles sold in the US were equipped with an interlock so that the car would not start until the seat belt was fastened. The system was pretty easy to defeat, but lthe requirement lasted for just one year due to consumer complaints.
I was once stuck in a remote part of a national forest when the system shorted out. After much fiddling and jumping on the seats the car finally started and I was able to avoid a very long walk out.
With today's electronic technology, i don't think bouncing on the seats is going to work anymore, so expect to hear stories about stranded drivers. At least we have cell phones now.

I really think this is a great idea for on road and off road travel equipment because we have more vehicles and weather conditions that challenge our driving skills not everyone is a skilled driver with what could challenge our driving abilities it takes 2.2 seconds to use this safety features check all your loved ones and happy travels

I think that it commendable for company's to help in making things safer but at the end of the day it just complicates things it should not be mandated by corporation or government we should still be able to decide. As a me mechanic by trade we find that the after market companies will sell some kind of bypass that we will have to fix the because of a short or some other kind of mechanical device that will fail and it will drive unnecessary cost up for things that's just not okay in my book let's put more money and time in expressing our concerns in public safety and proper knowledge on vehicle and it's purpose more strick rules on getting drivers license and big rig safety. Still would be nice if we made our own decisions.

Danged if I want to buckle up to back the pickup out of the carport to unload mulch on the other side of the driveway. They've gone way too far.

This “Shift to Drive” feature has been around for a number of years, but the vehicles are now arriving with the setting turned on. Why not make any mention on how this is a feature that can be turned off in the Driver Information Center?

Bill (not verified)    December 29, 2024 - 12:04AM

Just buy a seat belt extender and leave it plugged in. Don’t even hook seat belt to it.

Tom Watson (not verified)    December 29, 2024 - 12:12AM

Just put the seat belt behind you and plug it in, as for the louder chimes go to the fuse box, pull fuse out that runs the chimes

Matt (not verified)    December 29, 2024 - 12:33AM

I live in the only state that doesn't have a seatbelt mandate. I generally wear my seatbelt voluntarily. 100% of the time on the highway. But every now and then I need to move my car a few hundred feet in a parking lot or something and don't want to because I'm getting in and out of the car. The seat belt chime is obnoxious. Like it's pushing me to trick the system and potentially actually wear my seatbelt less often. All my previous vehicles allowed me to disable it. The Silverado does not. Meaning I may need to mess with wires to physically disable it, and again, legally I don't even need to wear a seatbelt. Nevermind when I'm in a parking lot and moving the truck to the door to load an item.

Matt (not verified)    December 29, 2024 - 12:36AM

Also, this setting can be turned off on the 2024 Silverado in the settings. The chime however can not be turned off.

I knew someone way back when who had a new 1973 Olds 442. You had to buckle up before the car would even start. She had a work around and defeated the system. What she DID NOT have was twenty-five internet sites telling her how to disable the damned thing. Get off your whiny behinds and look it up.

This is totally ridiculous. So say I am just moving my truck just to hook up a trailer or position it on my 2 post lift. I would have to put on my seat belt?. I will never own one of these vehicles. This is getting out of control.

A. King (not verified)    December 31, 2024 - 8:06PM

GM tried the same "belt before starting" feature in 1975.
My grandfather had it disabled on his Chevrolet Vega.

I'm a 50+ year loyal GM customer. I currently drive a 2024 silverado crew. I have the incredibly annoying seat belt chime along with browse feature disabled while driving and auto stop that i have to shut off every time I start the vehicle. I've been fighting with GM since the day after i drove it home. I was not made aware of these significant changes to trusted familiar features. I was led to believe same vehicle just newer. Thought i was getting a custom instead got the ORWELLIAN EDITION!!! I hope that insurance institute buys alot of GM products because I'm done. If I would have known, it would have been left on the lot.
