I Brought My Toyota Highlander Into the Dealer For the 10th Time To Get My Moonroof Leak Fixed, They Made Me Pay $2,500 and It’s Still Not Fixed

Does Toyota have a problem with moonroofs that leak water inside the Highlander and Tacoma? Here is a woman's story of how she paid Toyota to fix her leaky Highlander's moonroof, and it's still not fixed right. Here is Cassidy's remarkable story.

My Toyota Highlander's moonroof is leaking water all over my baby.

Imagine driving your Toyota Highlander SUV with your baby in the car seat in the back seat, and water is dripping on the infant. This would infuriate any mom. Not to mention the potential safety risks of a wet car seat and a distracted driver. She has to pull over and dry the baby off, who is probably screaming by now.

A young mom, Cassidy Maldonado (@cassidymaldonado_), is at her wit's end with a Toyota dealer promising to fix her Highlander's moonroof, which is leaking water. She's made countless trips back to the dealer, so many that she's lost count. She estimates it's now ten times, a fact she shares with her TikTok audience in a tone of exasperation.

It's not the only leaking Toyota moonroof I've covered. Another man with a Toyota Tacoma with a moonroof or panoramic glass roof has the same problem; the moonroof leaks like a sieve. He's had to take his car back to the dealer multiple times, just like Cassidy. Check out my report here.

Does Toyota have a problem with some of its vehicles from the factory Moonroofs?

Here is Cassidy's story.

She asks her audience, "Put your finger down if you bought a Toyota Highlander from an actual Toyota dealership when you were four months pregnant. They sold it to you broken with a water leak in the moonroof, and you didn't know?"

She holds five fingers up as she sits in the Toyota Highlander. She points to the moonroof above her head.

"And then I brought it in, and they try to fix it; they claimed they fixed it, but it's not actually fixed. I brought it back in over and over again because it keeps having the same water leak, and they keep claiming it's fixed."

On the fifth visit, they demanded $2,500 to fix the moonroof, claiming it was the source of the leak. But the problem persisted, and the car was now worse than ever."

Cassidy was left with no choice but to bring it in again, adding to her frustration and the financial strain of the situation.

"Over and over and over again," Cassidy says with frustration.

"Now it's the tenth or eleventh time, and they'll only give me half what I paid for the Highlander to buy a new car, and I don't want to do that, which is not fair. So, I'm sitting in a soaking wet car with my baby, hoping it's not moldy because they don't want to do anything for me."

Her Highlander is in the shop again.

A week later, Cassidy gave an update on her Toyota Highlander moonroof leak. She has her SUV in the dealer again. It's hard to believe, but this trip to the Toyota dealer, which she does not identify, is the eleventh time she has made it.

Cassidy says, "So, currently, there's not really an update. They (the Toyota dealer) said that either yesterday or the day before, they told me my car would be ready to be picked up, but they never let us know."

The Toyota dealer has not fixed her car and has yet to let her know when it will be ready, and now she has to drive her mom's car.

"So, I'm in my mom's car, and she's on vacation, so I'm getting to use her car right now, which is really nice. But, still no update."

"Hopefully, it's actually fixed, and they are having actual water leak people working on it, but they've said that before. So, I'm not sure. Hopefully, it's fixed. I'll keep updating you if there's a good update, but nothing yet."

What should you do if Toyota won't fix your vehicle's problem?

First, check if the issue is covered under your car's warranty. If you did not purchase a vehicle warranty or your vehicle is out of warranty, you don't have any choice but to pay for the repair.

However, if you have been to the dealer multiple times like Cassidy, a report from Edmunds says there are steps you can take.

1. Document everything:

Keep detailed records of all repair attempts, dates, descriptions of the problem, and any communication with the dealership.

2. Contact Toyota customer service:

Call the Toyota customer service hotline (800-331-4331) and explain the situation clearly.

3. Review your state's Lemon Law:

Understand the requirements to file a Lemon Law claim in your jurisdiction.

4. Consider a third-party diagnosis:

Get a second opinion from an independent mechanic to verify the issue and potential solutions.

5. Talk to dealership management:

Speak with the service manager or general manager at the dealership to try to resolve the issue internally.

6. Consult a lawyer:

If the problem remains unresolved, consider contacting a lawyer specializing in Lemon Law cases.

My 2014 highlander’s leaking sunroof could not be fixed by multiple places and online forums. A guy ended up just putting gorilla tape on the exterior perimeter of the panoramic sunroof glass and it hasn’t leaked in months. I just literally don’t operate the sunroof any more. I don’t really miss it, and I don’t miss the leaking!!!

I have a 2012, 3 door hatch back Toyota Yaris, I had bought brand new. The back window leaked a lot from day 1 and the dealership refused to do anything and ignored and did not respond. I will not deal with the Toyota dealership in this town again. With the amount of excuses and bull they feed you to not fix things or damage they do to your vehicle they are not accountable.

I’m sure there is more to this story if she has been to the same dealer 11 times. She should take it to a different Toyota dealership and get a different opinion just like you would go to a different Doctor if you came back to the same one with the same issue 11 times. My sunroof would leak when I went through a high pressure car wash, but that was the only time it leaked. My solution, don’t go through those anymore.

Yes indeed this is a very low class dealer. My experience with Toyota and Lexus has been excellent. The lemon law will be useful here. I think it’s like if the scar has been in the dealership for 30 total days it’s a lemon. Also it’s a shame that the dealer has taken advantage of you. They did not touch the car. Just kept it a day or two and told you it was fixed. Take it to a car wash and see what happens. And follow the advice from a previous poster and get Toyoda corporate bin a big way. They hate bad dealerships. Good luck !

Why do all these online stories never tell you anything first what year is her car and what has happened since the last time it was in the shop couldn’t you at least wait to publish this article until you have the full story. Are you that desperate for a story that you can’t wait to give readers the actual FULL STORY that’s why when I read one of these half-ass stories I block any website that publishes these lazy ass reporter’s articles that don’t explain the outcome the person who wrote this is lazy as hell

My Rav 4 with a moonroof had water in the dashboard at every rain but the dealer could not "find a leak" after multiple visits. Turns out they only checked the moonroof but it was the windshield that was leaking, discovered by an independent mechanic shop on the first visit.

I brought my Highlander in to the dealer for a vibration. They charged me $1k and they didn't fix it. As they were about to do a few things which I was skeptical of, I asked if they would guarantee that this would fix the vibration. They told me, "We can't guarantee that." They were right not to stand behind their work.

Moon roofs are a big additional cost and are a garbage option (but generally standard equipment in all but a base model). They're worse than garbage when they leak or break altogether. Manufacturers...get rid of these! Quit burdening us with costs for something as useless as these things!

That is because the ENTIRE INTERIOR needs to be removed in order to install new seal properly….watch car care nut on youtube, he shows entire process to repair correctly…

I've had the same problem with 3 other cars. Dealer was way too expensive $ 1500. And said they would have to take everything apart.I used the same place for a
Very simple fix, 1st 2 vehicles were $100.00 last one cost $150.00 at a car upholstery and tint. It took them less than 1 hour. They have to go in and clean out the lines that drain the water from the sun / moon roof, so the rain water doesn't leak inside. Dealers are a rip off. Call around

I have a toyota highlander that has a sunroof.
I had a problem with the sunroof leaking.
What I did was, I opened the sunroof and located the drain holes in the front part
Of the sunroof opening. I then very carefully poured bleach into the holes (located one on each side of the rail) then I used a 24 inch zip tie and pushed down the holes several times until I saw it draining.
Then I went to a car wash and ran it through and it didn't leak anymore.

If she didn't buy the car new I don't believe the Lemon Law applies.
However, if she bought the car used but still under the original warranty she can file a Breach of Warranty claim. She can check with the laws in her state to get more information on this.
Good Luck 🤞

Would be curious if she goes thru the car wash and uses the "soft touch"
I have a friend that has a Highlander and the sunroof leaks, the dealership won't cover it since she uses a car wash....

She needs to demand meeting with the factory rep when he visits next. Way back, I had a car with 3 on going problems. I took it in so many times I was on first name basis with the driver who took me home and picked me up. When I asked to speak with the rep, they instantly fixed 2 of the problems. After seeing the rep, they finally fixed the third problem.

Watch "The Car Nut" on YouTube. He does mostly Toyota's. He covered this very subject and the proper fix which I'm sure the dealer is not doing. Good Luck!

Sunroof and Panoramic roofs are fastened in pretty secure. Some models are even installed with urethane, same substance that holds your windshield secure. However, each corner of the moonroof have drain hoses connected to them. One of them could have become clogged or the hose could have had a kink in it during installation at the factory. The water will back up and cause a leak. To verify correctly you will need remove all upper garnishes and remove the headliner. Then you will be able to check each hose is functioning properly. Hope this helps.

I had a leaky 3rd party installed moon roof in my 2002 Camry that I bought new from the dealer. Toyota wouldn’t even look at it and I could find no other mechanic to touch in 2 years. A $15 roll of Gorilla Tape solved the issue. I said I would never buy another car with a moonroof but ended up in a 2025 Crown Signia Limited w/the panoramic roof. I’m keeping that tape handy.
