Consumers who buy a compact car are looking for a comfortable, quiet cabin, and you don't have to buy a luxury car to get it. Which automaker makes the quietest cars? A new study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) identifies the four quietest mainstream compact cars. The 2022 Subaru Impreza now scores the second-highest in the compact car class.
Because it's hard for car shoppers to determine how quiet a car is in a short test drive, Consumer Reports tests all models to determine the best new cars with the quietest cabin. The mainstream compact models listed below are ranked according to CR's interior noise tests. All four models scored well in road tests, have good reliability, have active safety features, and scored the best in crash tests.
The four quietest mainstream compact cars
You don't think of compact cars as quiet because of having lighter bodies and high-revving engines. CR identified the four best models you can buy today. The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta ranks the best, followed by the 2022 Subaru Impreza is second-best overall. The 2022 Mazda 3 is next, and the 2022 Nissan Sentra comes in at number four.
CR says, "Subaru knocks it out of the park with the current Impreza sedan and hatchback, now among the top-rated cars in the compact class. The Impreza wows us most with its quiet cabin, roominess, and user-friendly controls, and its ride comfort puts some luxury cars to shame."
"We got 30 mpg overall with our sedan, commendable, given the standard all-wheel drive. The EyeSight system of active safety features, which includes FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection, is standard with the automatic transmission but unavailable with the manual gearbox", says Consumer Reports.
What is the price of the 2022 Impreza?
The 2022 Impreza comes in four trim levels for customers. The seven different models come in base sedan ($20,290), base hatchback ($20,790) Premium sedan ($23,690), Premium hatchback ($24,190), Sport sedan ($25,090), Sport hatchback ($24,490), and Limited hatchback ($27,890). Destination and delivery ($995) are included in the prices above.
What is the 2022 Impreza fuel mileage?
The EPA says the 2022 Subaru Impreza gets 31 mpg combined city/highway and 28/36 city/highway mpg in the non-Sport CVT trims. The 2022 Impreza 4-Door sedan with the 5-speed manual gearbox has the same fuel mileage. The 2022 Impreza 4-Door sedan gets 26 combined city/highway and 23/31 city/highway mpg in the non-Sport CVT trims.
What's next for the 2023 Impreza?
Customers may want to wait for the 2023 Subaru Impreza that gets a complete redesign. The next-generation 2023 Impreza will likely come with the new EyeSight X driver-assist safety technology. Recent reports not confirmed by Subaru say the compact car could get a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. The all-new Impreza will arrive in early 2023.
Before the 2023 models arrive, Consumer Reports now ranks the 2022 Subaru Impreza one of the four best compact cars with the quietest cabins.
