One definite trend in crossovers is the move toward rugged, off-pavement trims. In Kia calls its version of the Sportage that has these abilities the X-Pro. We love these special trims for their added capability, and much of what they gain comes from a wise tire selection. Let’s examine the tire that Kia chose for its Sportage X-Pro, the BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A all-terrain tire.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - What Is It?
The BFG Trail-Terrain T/A is an all-season all-terrain tire intended to be used on moderately-graded dirt roads and paths as well as on pavement.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Off Pavement, Trail Capability and Test Results
The Kia Sportage we tested was brilliant on dirt roads and trails. We give full credit for that to the “high-profile” tire size and the BFG Trail Terrain tires. The tires smoothed out washboard sections, even though we did not air down. These are ideal tires for folks who live in areas, like New Hampshire, that has both paved and unpaved roads.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Tread Analysis
The tread of the Trail-Terrain T/A has an open tread block design perfect for off-pavement use. The compound was designed to resist chips and tears from gravel and stones when off-road. We like the side tread and feel it may offer some added protection against sidewall tears. Full tread sipes will help a lot with snow.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Is It Severe Snow Rated?
This tire comes with and without the severe snow duty rating. This particular version of the Trail-Terrain T/A we tested was not officially rated for severe snow duty, though it is available in an XL version with a T speed rating that version does earn the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, denoting severe snow duty.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Dry Handling
We were surprised by how crisp the handling of the Kia Sportage was on these tires with a full, meaty sidewall. There was no lack of steering response. We detected no tire howl when cornering, and the tires offered excellent dry-weather grip. Tire Rack ranked the dry grip of this tire a 9.1/10 (Excellent)

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Wet Handling
It rained for the first three days of our testing. We experienced no hydroplaning, and wet-weather grip was excellent. Tire Rack gives this tire an 8.6/10 for wet weather handling (Excellent)

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Noise
The Sportage is a refined vehicle, but the wind and engine noises masked any tire noise at around-town speeds. On the highway, we could barely discern any noise from the tires, but if we listened for it, we thought maybe it was possible to detect. The vehicle had 4,000 miles of travel on the tires.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Our Impressions and Opinions
We came away very impressed with the BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tires. They are the perfect choice for any crossover SUV owner or light truck owner who wishes to have off-pavement capability. Having tested, and really liked, the Falken WildPeak A/T Trail tire on a Subaru Forester, we’d say the BFG Trail Terrain T/A is a worthy competitor to the Falken. The fact that the tire has so many positive reviews at Tire Rack, also helps us to say with confidence that this is a tire that most owners will find to be superior to the all-season OEM tires that their vehicle comes with.
