5 Reasons the 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600 Is the Full-Size Luxury SUV Standard of Excellence In the World - And One Simple but Important Thing We’d Change

We’ve tested a string of excellent “global” automakers’ SUVs this winter. One stands out among the best - the Cadillac Escalade. Here’s why we feel it’s the best large SUV built today.

Had we not tested a long list of the very best large SUVs ever built by the leaders in luxury automobiles over this very difficult winter, we would not have written this story. Each had its strong and weak points. However, one stood apart based on our real-world driving in a very hard New England Winter, the 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600. Please allow us to shorten this string of identifiers to “the Escalade” for the duration of the story to keep our hands from cramping. Here are five reasons this is the best SUV of its size and type, and one simple thing GM could do to make it more practical for real-world use, meaning New England.

2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600 - Powertrain
I’m a hybrid owner along with fellow TN contributor, Hande Tuncer, and for us, fuel efficiency matters. But we realize that in full-size SUVs, powertrain excellence matters more. If you want to pinch pennies and if you wish to drive green, you have no business owning a luxury vehicle the size of a church van. Cadillac’s powertrain for the Escalade is perfectly suited to its mission.

With 6.2 glorious liters of V8 perfection and a smooth and seamless 10-speed geared automatic, this is the past, present, and future of large SUV powertrains for GM. It is hands-down the best combination we have driven in the large SUV segment. Quiet, torquey, capable. Thirsty? Sure, but when your budget is $130K, is that a real priority?

The wrap-around high-quality screen used by Cadillac in the Escalade is ideal. Not stupid big for the sake of it, big for ease of use. There is a separate screen lower for your HVAC controls, and it is easy to work without careful aim. Most importantly, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, wireless, sync instantly, and they operate glitch-free. I would never recommend any daily driver or family vehicle without these important safety systems. They reduce distraction, and they are easy to use for any phone owner.

If you want the best, buy a Cadillac. It’s that simple. Chevy and GMC both make a version of this SUV, but I’ve tested them, and this one seems to go to 11, where they are 10s. Every aspect of the interior and exterior feels like it was designed and crafted by the Michelangelo of automobile making. If you want true luxury, here it is.

2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600 - American as Apple Pie
The Escalade is built in America, by Americans who belong to the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 276, using primarily American-made components. Its assembly is in Arlington, Texas, and I’ve seen the plant many times. Massive. High tech. This plant was GM’s testing grounds for its COVID response measures. The Arlington plant builds big body-on-frame vehicles, and in the event that America needed to convert back to emergency wartime manufacturing could be among the first plants to be repurposed.

2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600 - Warranty
The bumper-to-bumper warranty of the Escalade is a long four years and 50,00 miles. That’s well past a 39-month lease term. It will serve one owner or maybe two. It makes the Escalade an ideal vehicle to buy off-lease, offering full factory protection for the subsequent buyer for a good part of a year. The powertrain warranty runs six years and 70,000 miles. A warranty like this one boosts resale value and offers a longer fixed cost of ownership than a traditional, shorter-duration warranty.

One Thing We’d Change About the 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600 - Tires
Kudos to Cadillac for putting a full-sized spare under the back of the Escalade. We love seeing a true SUV feature like that. However, we’re not as fond of the decision to fit wagon-wheel-sized 24-inch wheels and low-profile touring tires to this SUV. They are less likely to survive a pot-hole mishap than a smaller rim size with more sidewall. We’d much prefer to see a Michelin CrossClimate2 or Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 all-weather, severe snow duty tire. It would significantly expand the vehicle’s snow capability without sacrifice and would eliminate the need for a dedicated set of winter tires.

You’ve heard our arguments why the $128,435 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport 4WD 600 is the best, and how we’d make it better. What’s your opinion? Tell us in the comments below.
