Ford Freestyle under NHTSA investigation for unintended lunging

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into reports that certain Ford Freestyle crossovers are ‘lunging’ without input of the driver – slightly reminiscent of the acceleration problems plaguing Toyota but with far less severe results.

The NHTSA chose to investigate the 2005-2007 Ford Freestyle after receiving 238 complaints that the crossover was lunging forward at very low speeds when in gear without either the brake or accelerator pedal applied. The complainants pointed out that the brakes being applied stopped the car right away, but if you were sitting with the vehicle in Drive or Reverse and did not have your foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle could suddenly lunge until you had time to react and hit the brakes. Also, reports claim that this lunge could be more severe if the vehicle has the air condition running or if the steering wheel is turned to full lock (all the way to one side).

The consumers who filed these complaints about the 2005-2007 Ford Freestyle claimed that their vehicle suddenly rolled forward, as far as ten feet, and in 18 cases, an accident occurred. In one case, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle when it lunged in a driveway but the only injury sustained was a bruised knee. This problem differs from those displayed by Toyota in the fact that the Toyota unintended acceleration issues occurred at higher speeds where these Ford problems hitting the Freestyle are occurring only at low speeds - speeds at which the vehicle is easily controlled and stopped by the brake pedal.

This 2005-2007 Ford Freestyle investigation applies to around 170,000 vehicles and should the NHTSA find some sort of fault with the Freestyle to cause these unintended lunging problems, Ford could be forced to issue a recall to address the issues. The number of additional complaints that come in coupled with the NHTSA findings will help Ford and the Feds decide whether or not a recall is necessary.

We have a 2006 Freestyle that is lunging also. As stated by others it will die lose power the lights come on but by the time you can get it to the dealer they can never find anything wrong, go figure.

Our 2005 Ford Freestyle does the "lunging" too! It would be nice to know that this a car failure and have a recall notice on this issue! We have had our car since Aug. of last year and it has been fine until this summer. We bought it w/95000 miles and after just putting around 6000 miles since(and into the heat of the summer) we have noticed this annoying problem. It is not that bad on our car but is pretty apparent we could do w/o!

We have had the same problem with our 2005; but now the A/C will stop working sporatically and then come back on.... now the battery is
draining but the mechanic said the alternator was fine... go figure

Mine is starting to lunge without the air on in the winter. I have received the letter but need to make arrangements to go without a car all afternoon while they fix it.

This also happens to my 2005 Ford Freestyle. Lunges and I have to keep my foot on the brake. Last eve the the light came on said Engine failsafe mode and shut off car. I had to turn off air and restart car with my foot on brake so I wouldnt hit anyone. RECALL PLEASE !

We have a 2007 Ford Freestayle and it does the very same thing. Lunges (forwards & backward), engine light comes on, car dies.....etc. These issues are particularly bad during the hot summer months and is worse when the air conditioner is running. I hope all of these comments make it back to Ford so they can resolve this problem.

I got my 2006 Ford Freestyle used in October (2010) with 121,000mi. and this year I started noticing it lunging forward when I'm trying to park. it always does it at very low speeds when I'm parking or pulling forward a little at a stop to see better. I had my car at ford this month to inquire about why my cat is doing that. and they couldn't duplicate the problem they said. but it still does it. more so aftr I have driven it a couple miles.I almost hit a parked car in front of me and a big planted cement pot at a restaurant! because it lunges forward I try my hardest to hover over that brake peddle and keep my distance in traffic just in case! I love my car, but I wish ford would be held responsible for this Issue that could be the throttle body or sensor, because it's obviously not a user error, it's a serious and scary mal function.

Otherwise Happy Ford Owner

I was contacted by them the other day also about the lunging after reading about everyone else having the same problem and making a complaint myself. The more of us that file complaints the more chance that they will make Ford do a recall. I am not about to take the car back to the dealer myself, cannot afford it! I will just put up with it since I know what to expect and hope that Ford gets their heads out of their behinds.

I had my 2007 Freestyle checked out by Ford for the lunging and "of course" they could not find anything wrong with it.
I did just have them replace rotators on the back and those were apparently covered by Ford. The front ones also had to be replace but I ended up paying for them.

I have mine in the shop today as the compressor has gone back on it. It seems like there is always something going wrong with this vehicle. Wished I would have bought something else as it has been a money pit.
I am going to file several complaints.

Go back to the Ford dealer and have them check again. All of my car problems were solved when they replaced the "throttle control" at a cost of $746.00 (This included labor.) Since I had this replaced back on July 5th I haven't had any problems with stalling, lunging, car dying, engine light coming, etc. expecially during the hottest time of the day. When I explained to the mechanic the problems I was having with my 2007 Freestyle, he knew exactly what was causing the problem. Expensive repair bill but now I don't have to worry every time I get in the car. This summer has been extremely hot (over 100 degrees every day for the past month) but everything is fine now.

My 06 does the same thing. Also it shuts down after the lunge and tool light temporarily comes on. Please email me with re call info if any :) ty

Having the same exact problems, was planning on taking it to the dealership tomorrow when I decided to do a little research and found this. I will be making a complaint myself.

Linda (not verified)    August 17, 2011 - 12:22AM

My 2006 Freestyle has started to lunge when taking my foot off the brake when stopped. Ford must take care of this now. This many people having the same problem makes it quite clear there is a serious issue.

I hope ford will recall. I love my freestyle its perfect for my large family and all the sports my kids are in. It has always lunged but seems to get worse. 3 wks ago it went crazy while i was drivng home from work my engine light and tool light came on the rpms rocketed while the car could barley move. The dash was reading to check transmission and check engine and turn off traction control all this going on at once, it really freaked me out. Now it does this all the time, im scared to drive it and it no longer is under warranty. No one has any answers for us that help. How frustrating!!!! Whats crazy is when the tool light is off and there is no traction control error the car runs perfect no noise no indication that there is any type of machanical issue. Seems lunge when i put it into park or reverse the rpms shoot to like 2500 this is so dangerous. Ford Please Help Us

We have the same problem with our Freestyle (2006) and it seems to only happen when the air conditioner is on, and only upon parking or backing out, Yes it occurs upon backing up as well.
When we are not running the air it does not occur. As for the break recall we never got one. Can any one tell me when that was issued?

Debbie (not verified)    December 9, 2011 - 4:29PM

I had a 2006 Freestyle also and mine was lunging forward and in reverse with my foot on the brake pedal. One day I went out to start the car and I heard a clicking noise like the battery was dead and all the panel lights, head lights, tail lights and inside lights started flashing like the car was going to blow, I took the key out of the ignition and they still kept flashing. My husband finally got the car started and with the gas pedal to the floor, the car would not move and the rpms would not do anything. We had it towed to the Ford dealership and they said it was the throttle body and that he just had one yesterday with the same problem. Here's the kicker, when I picked the vehicle up, the mechanic stated that I got lucky because we got the last throttle body and they were now on back order and he had another vehicle just like mine coming in with the same problem. WOW, wouldn't you think this would tell Ford something, in 3 days time they had 3 Ford Freestyles in the shop with the exact same problem. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out, let alone all the complaints across the U.S. about this problem. It cost us $850.00 to fix our car and then I traded it in a week later for another vehicle. I could not take a chance on my family getting hurt because of this problem with the Freestyles.

I had the throttle body replaced on my 2005 Freestyle in July of 2010, it started to fail again in July of 2011. I to got rid of mine and decided to never buy another Ford product after this. The service advisor would not even return my phone call when I wanted to talk about this problem. I think Ford is just ignoring the problem and has no plans of fixing it as this model is no longer being made.

2006 Ford Freestyle

same lunging problem, vehicle has about 68K and just as most are describing, AC on is when the lunging is produced. Very scary when you have your foot on the brake and the vehicle just takes off on its on..........

2007 Ford Freestyle - lunges backward and forward with foot on brakes. I hope there is a recall as this is dangerous and annoying. My car will actually shut down on me in traffic. Engine runs smooth but will rib when I change gears. There are no check engine lights on to tell me if there is a problem when it's being driven.

Anonymous (not verified)    June 5, 2012 - 5:54PM

I'm experiencing this same problem. When I put it in reverse I have to make sure the brake is applied for several seconds while the car attempts to accelerate.

Jo (not verified)    June 29, 2012 - 9:43PM

I have a 2007 Freestyle and it scares me and my children to death every time it does that. It doesn't matter if I'm parking or in reverse, it catches you off guard. For this reason I will not let anyone drive it and I for sure would teach my 17 year old how to drive in it. I hate I ever bought this car and I would trade it in if I could afford to. I have owned 2 Fords and never had a problem as severe without it being recalled. I will NOT I repeat NOT buy another FORD again!!

I live in Montreal & I just bought a used 2006 Freestyle sel with only 126000 Km.It started lunging forward when I was backing out of a parking spot & stalled on me.went on the main road & after about ten feet the car had no power, RPM went high & then the engine light came on as well as the wrench light.Brought the car to my friends garage put the OBDII scanner on it & gave the Input speed sensor error.Replaced the sensor for the price of 300$, did not change a thing.Had the transmission opened up to find that the a shaft had broken in the transmission. Now its costing me over 3500$ to get the transmission rebuilt.Sure hope that Ford are going to open up there eyes & issue a recall because this is just frustrating & most of all costly. My transmission guy told me that all CVT transmission from Ford are no good

I am potentially having a similar problem with Ford Freestyle Limited 2007. AC went out recently and had air compressor fixed. Then a couple of weeks went by and while driving, suddenly had loss of drivetrain power and couldn't go more than 25-30miles per hour. Powertrain light came on. Car was lunging forward a bit when releasing the brake from idle. Got car home, and then waited a few hours. Problem with powertrain light has gone away. Lunging problem not as severe, but something seems wrong with the idle.

I just got news that the problem with my 2007 Ford Freestyle is the throttle body. The mechanic suggested cleaning it, rather than replace it. The car was lunging forward, then there was no acceleration. The wrench light also came on. It is going to cost me $350.00 to clean it, compared to $950.00 to replace it with a new one. Has anyone heard of any recalls? Thanks
