General Motors

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is a linchpin of the U.S. automotive industry, selling millions of vehicles every year - 8.3 million in 2018, to be precise – and employing more than 170,000 workers. More familiarly known as GM, the auto company counts iconic brands Buick and Cadillac under its corporate umbrella, as well the more utilitarian GMC brand and the budget-conscious Chevrolet badge.

Formed in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, General Motors has a long history with the Great Lakes State. Alongside the Ford Motor Company, GM’s presence in the region and its creation of popular cars under various brands are some of the main reasons that Detroit is so widely known as Motor City. GM is a Fortune 500 company and frequently appears in the top 25 of that list as one of the largest U.S. corporations by revenue.

American General Motors’ workers can breathe a sigh of relief now that a strike at GM in Canada was narrowly averted. The head of the Canadian auto workers union, Unifor, announced a tentative agreement had been reached late Monday. The agreement guarantees that the plant in Oshawa, Ontario, will stay open which was one of the union’s major concerns.

The head of Unifor, the Canadian auto workers union is focusing on General Motors as this year’s strike target in negotiations. Any walkout at GM Canada would be felt almost immediately in America. Workers at GM in Canada make several key engines that are used in Silverados, Tahoes and Camaros so any shortages could quickly stall American plants.

General Motors and the U.S. Army are cooperating on a fuel cell vehicle and we will get to see it in October. The automaker is releasing a teaser photo of the vehicle, based on the Chevrolet Colorado truck platform . The actual vehicle will be unveiled at the fall meeting of the Association of the United States Army, in Washington, D.C., in October.
