General Motors

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is a linchpin of the U.S. automotive industry, selling millions of vehicles every year - 8.3 million in 2018, to be precise – and employing more than 170,000 workers. More familiarly known as GM, the auto company counts iconic brands Buick and Cadillac under its corporate umbrella, as well the more utilitarian GMC brand and the budget-conscious Chevrolet badge.

Formed in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, General Motors has a long history with the Great Lakes State. Alongside the Ford Motor Company, GM’s presence in the region and its creation of popular cars under various brands are some of the main reasons that Detroit is so widely known as Motor City. GM is a Fortune 500 company and frequently appears in the top 25 of that list as one of the largest U.S. corporations by revenue.

Here at Torque News, we cover a wide variety of stories involving General Motors, from new models and announcements to the company’s latest technology developments and electric vehicle initiatives. GM plans to release more than 20 new electric models across its major brands by 2023 and you’ll hear about all of them on this site, as well as the latest and greatest from GM’s existing models.

If you are a Chrysler Group or General Motors fan who likes to row your own gears, you are in luck, as "FCA" and GM offer far more models with manual transmissions than do any of the other automakers doing business in the United States – with the Chrysler Group taking the slight edge overall.

General Motors has recently launched an advertising campaign boasting about the advantages of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra steel bodies compared to the Ford !50 aluminum body, but word around the watercooler suggests that the next generation full size GM trucks will follow Ford into the world of aluminum body panels.

One cause for the economic troubles some U.S. automakers faced in the past was too great a reliance on trucks for profits. Guess what?

Violators of a certain non-disclosure agreement have revealed that the next-generation Chevrolet Volt will have seating for five. Is there any real reason why the 2016 Volt should not target the mass market?

Until yesterday, all we knew about the next-generation Chevrolet Volt’s looks came from a teaser image of the liftgate of the car. Los Angeles-area Volt owners got a full preview of the new Volt, plus a partial front-end view for the rest of us.

GM has said that the second-generation Volt set to debut at the North American International Auto Show in January will be better in every way. After today’s press event detailing many of the impressive changes in the 2016 Volt, two major questions are still unanswered.

Cadillac is planning to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of its upcoming CT6 large sedan next year. What we do know is that the luxury saloon will not bear much resemblance to the other Cadillac plug-in, the ELR.

After a promising August, the Chevy Volt ended its 2014 streak of monthly sales increases with a disappointing September. Is the upcoming 2016 model responsible?

“Electric car” and “fire” are words that EV advocates hate to see in the same sentence. But in the case of a Chevrolet Volt fire last month, the cause was a component found in every vehicle on the road today.

GM has backed up its stated commitment to electric vehicles by leading the industry in workplace charging, particularly the solar-powered variety. Ford has responded with plans for a solar canopy of epic proportions, partly to charge its own electric vehicles.

Has General Motors learned its lesson from the unreasonably high expectations it encouraged for the first-generation Chevrolet Volt? The automaker has toned down its position on the upcoming 2016 Volt and is reconsidering its marketing strategy.

Arguably the most polarizing car America has ever seen, the Chevrolet Volt is finally getting a major redesign. The next-generation Volt will make its first appearance at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January, and we can’t wait.

Everyone seems to be holding out for the 2016 Chevrolet Volt, the model year due for a significant redesign. Yet even the unheralded 2015 model has received an unexpected improvement.

The Cadillac ELR has not sold well, mainly due to its disproportionately high sticker price. Cadillac and its dealers are getting desperate to move the vehicles.

For years, GM’s Yukon and Tahoe have been the large SUV of choice for families looking to go camping, boating, or taking a long trip. An incredibly useful transporter and hauler, the Yukon and Tahoe's only real downside is their relatively poor gas mileage. In all other respects - utility, durability, style, and comfort - these large SUVs are top-notch.

The electrification movement has largely ignored the segment that arguably needs it the most: pickup trucks. With one notable exception, we still won’t be seeing electric pickups on the road for some time.

Though GM still insists the impressive little EV will remain only available in California and Oregon, a few Ohio and Michigan dealers claim otherwise. Could the Spark EV climb from the ranks of mere compliance?

General Motors boss Mary Barra announced yesterday that 15 company employees have been fired as a result of the failure to recall the vehicles with the ignition problems and although America deserves to know what positions have been vacated – the company has only named one name thus far.

General Motors is doing its best to convince the world that it is fully committed to the success of electric vehicles. The company now boasts 401 electric vehicle charging stations at its U.S. locations.

The GM ignition switch debacle has raised an interesting question: Do we really need car keys? After all, if GM cars had used keyless, push-button ignition systems rather than physical keys, GM wouldn’t be in this mess.

Just a year into its life, the Chevy Spark EV will be updated for 2015 with an entirely new battery pack. The change will reduce costs and is indicative of GM’s sincere interest in building quality electric vehicles.

General Motors released its first quarter earnings report showing it narrowly avoided a much anticipated loss. Instead, GM turned a $125 million profit – down 86 percent versus last year. It looks like GM was able to avoid a recall induced loss thanks to its pricing strategy on full-size trucks.

General Motors has announced a new ignition recall that is technically separate of the previous ignition recall – although the 2.2 million cars included in this “new” recall are included in the previous recall so the total number of recalled vehicles won’t increase.

Today GM officially announced it will invest $449 million to support the launch of the next-generation Chevrolet Volt and two upcoming unspecified models. The investment reaffirms GM’s commitment to the Volt and raises speculation about the mystery cars.

There was much jubilation when it was announced that Mary Barra was named the first female CEO of a major global automaker – making her the most powerful woman in the world – but as Barra has become the face of the GM ignition cylinder recalls, it looks more and more each day like the “boy’s club” at GM has offered her up to be sacrificed for the mistakes of past company leaders.

General Motors has issued yet another major recall, this time calling back 1.3 million small and medium sized cars over a concern that the power steering system could lose the power assist - making it much more difficult to drive and possibly increasing the chances of an accident.
