What MPG Does Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Really Get? Owners Speak out

Learn from the people who own them. What real gas mileage does a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid get?

There are several reasons people choose to buy a RAV4 Hybrid. Some enjoy having an environmentally friendly vehicle. In fact, I have spoken with many people who will only buy hybrids for this specific reason.

Others appreciate the increase in power. For example, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid utilizes a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and electric motors to produce 219 horsepower. Gasoline RAV4 vehicles have 203 horsepower, in comparison.

However, perhaps the main reason someone would select a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid or anything 2019 and newer is for fuel efficiency.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid MPG

Take a look at the window sticker for a 2019 or 2020 or 2021 RAV4 Hybrid and see fuel estimates of 41 city / 38 highway / 40 combined.

Very impressive stats and this is 10 miles per gallon better than gasoline equivalent RAV4s.

But is this the real mileage people see in “the real world?” After all, a big factor in actual mpg is how people actually drive their cars. A conservative driver might see higher than posted. A lead foot will see lower results more often than not.

I decided to ask those who know best. The Facebook group “Toyota RAV4 Club” is an online forum of 51,000 RAV4 owners and fans. If anyone would know, it would be their members. I also polled my “Toyotajeff” YouTube channel viewers.

Their answers were quite surprising.

People speak on RAV4 Hybrid MPG

Grant found success on a recent road trip. “Did a four-hour road trip (8 hours total) to the NC mountains. Reset my trip before I left home and got 39.7 for an average. This includes all my riding around while in the mountains and some parkway driving.”

Mirela reported in. “2021 XLE Hybrid, about 43.1 lately.”

“2020 RAV4 XSE. 42mpg mixed driving.” Said Aaron.

TJ commented. “Best tank average for my wife is 43mpg. Her highway commute in the summer tank average is 39mpg.”

Karen is seeing really strong fuel efficiency with her non-hybrid. “I average 36mpg with a 2019 RAV4 LE and it’s not a hybrid!”

Robert gets “36-37 in city here and 44 on freeway.”

Tisha is a new RAV4 Hybrid owner. “I have owned my 2021 RAV4 Limited Hybrid for 3 months now. I am averaging between 42mpg-44mpg. I couldn’t be happier!”

Time for your thoughts on Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

I would love to know if you are also a RAV4 Hybrid owner, and if so, what type of gas mileage you and your family are seeing.

What has your experience been so far driving one?

Thanks for reading everyone. See you next story when I reveal if your 2021 Toyota Venza has remote engine start.

have a 2020 hybird rav4 I am getting 32,6 mpg winter driving in Colorado. ,I called corporate they listened to my complaint but had no suggestions. I have an appointment with the dealer Tuesday 4000 miles on the car and I drive with the cruise control on all the time. very disappointed

I have bought a 2020 Hybrid Toyota Rav 4 in Sept. brand new. Its only getting on average 32 MPGs.. Very unhappy with this. It was sold to me as getting 41 mpg, 38 highway. What can I do?? This is false advertising.

I have a 2019 XSE. Had tank problem. In town driving in seattle area 38-40 mpg from sept- may. Drove xcountry may 2020 w car fully packed. Avg based on manual calculations 36.3 mpg. MPG in Detroit area was 38 w/mixed driving. In Dec 2020 got new tank. Fills went from 9.5 g to 11.5 gal. MPG post new tank fix, Dec-Feb is now 30.4 MPG city. People say it’s because of temps. OK. I’m willing to reevaluate when temps are higher. Bottom line after 18 months and 11k miles in different geographies: I was initially excited about Toyota hybrid SUV. Purchased for quality reputation, cars stats. 1st time Toyota buyer. Currently I am disappointed in purchase and feel Toyota’s reputation is just hype. How could this leader in overall quality produce its most popular vehicle with a major fuel tank flaw, albeit a convenience not safety issue? And continue to market it as if it didn’t exist? Did the engineers not notice it only took 9.5 gallons for a 14.5 gal tank when they filled it up? I use the Toyota Production System at work, that should not have occurred. And why has the company not been upfront about it? Would I buy another Toyota? No, not as of today.

We have a 2021 Rav4 hybrid XLE Premium. How are you all calculating your fuel economy? Do you trust the MPG digital on board output? Do you have it set to tell you each trips MPG? Do you have it set to tell you the lifelong fuel economy? Or do you do it the correct way and read the odometer, write it down at fill up, then drive until you are empty and pump gas to full again, write down the gallons filled and new mileage and calculate manually? This information should be given before bragging about your 45MPG. My neighbor brags about his 30MPG IN HIS F350 Ford Super Duty. I told him he was crazy and to manually write it down and do his own math after a full tank was gone and refilled.
HE STOPPED BRAGGING ABOUT THAT TRUCK.
We get 33MPG in eco mode mostly city.
The world must be flat where all you 45+ MPG live, or...

I have a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. I am very disappointed. I am getting 29 mpg. I am a good driver and try to coast down the hills when no one is behind me to get the MPG up. After I start my car the engine immediately starts up. I used to be able to get down the road a bit before it would kick in. I think something is wrong but my technician says everything checks out. ANYONE have any ideas?

Bennett Marcel (not verified)    February 17, 2021 - 6:19PM

I also have a 2020 Hybrid Limited and I am getting about 33.5 combined. I am extremely disappointed. I just had the dealer replace the gas tank and I was told that this would correct the MPG calculations. Wrong. do not know who to complain to. I bought this SUV because of the great MPG claim/rating. we also own a 12' camry hybrid that has always gotten excellent mpg

Shahbaz Ahmed (not verified)    February 17, 2021 - 8:49PM

I was happy with my Camry Hybrid 2012 therefore I bought Rav4 Hybrid 2021, it is a really waste of money, I really drive nicely (not a hard hitter), Rav4 only gave 33 / 34 combined, if I drive under 40 MPH then it hit 37.5 MPG, who drive under 40 MPG in NJ? I called Toyota corporate HQ and lunch a case about it and they never bother to call me back, that will be my last Toyota.

Dennis Cooper (not verified)    February 24, 2021 - 5:44PM

When I first bought my 2020 Limited Hybrid, it got exactly what they said 38/41......for about 2 months. It has now dropped to 28 and Toyota says there's nothing wrong. The dealership has tried everything but are unable to fix it. I am going to pursue a Lemon Law action.

Shahbaz Ahmed (not verified)    February 24, 2021 - 11:13PM

Toyota is reputable company and I have no idea why they are doing this bull shit. I recently bought Rav4 Hybrid 2021 and really really disappointed about the MPG, it only gives 38/40 PMG when I have to drive it 30 to 40 mile range in local street, if I hit the gas and speed up 50/60 MPG dropped to 32 PMG. I bought due to my camry Hybrid 2012 which still giving out 38 MPG after 130K miles and 8 years on road. But car is just a waste of money.

Bennett Marcel (not verified)    February 25, 2021 - 10:00PM

I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA not that it will come of anything but this is absolutely ridiculous to so much for this vehicle and it not perform to even close to stated mileage. They will either correct this or they are going to be taking it back.

shahbaz ahmed (not verified)    February 26, 2021 - 7:34AM

I found that hybrid cars are for driving - meant to say not just go to grocery for 5 miles, you have drive them like putting miles at least 1500 to 2000 miles per month then they will give the MPG as mentioned by Toyota.

Kelly (not verified)    February 26, 2021 - 5:02PM

The hybrid is supposed to help with in town driving, not highway driving. In town where the battery is supposed to power the car until you get to a certain speed. My engine comes on as soon as I start it. I think something is not quite right!

BENNETT Marcel (not verified)    February 26, 2021 - 6:08PM

My wife own a 12' Camry hybrid. That car has always gice great mpg. Pretty much as advertised. I have taken the rav4 on a few longer trips. Should get 38 on the hwy. I am getting about 33. I am familiar with the best way to drive easy on the gas. Coasting. There is something wrong.

Here is an interesting update. This last Monday I dropped my Rav4 off at my dealer for a detailed MPG and system check. there reset the computer. not sure what if anything else they did, but suddenly it’s now Getting 41mpg..with?? I am so confused. i’ll check it manually on the next fill up.

I’ve recently purchased a 2017 Rav 4 hybrid limited. It has 35,000 kms on it. I’m very disappointed with the fuel efficiency. I average 11 litres / 100 kms. Was advertised at 7.8 - 8.2 / 100 kms. I’ve had for 3 months and only get approx 400 km per tank.

My 2021 RAV 4 XLE is a "3season" car. During the winter in the northeast it averages 36 - 37 mpg. In warmer weather it averages 41-43 mpg. Obviously, temps between 0 and 30 causes the reduced mpg.

Jesse (not verified)    April 16, 2021 - 4:41PM

2020 Hybrid RAV4. We are lucky to get 30 mpg in the city. I try to fill up at half way mark. At the half way mark our mileage reads 128 miles. We are filling up every 4-5 days.

Jerry (not verified)    April 29, 2021 - 1:17PM

I have 2019 RAV4 Hybrid XSE and I am averaging 31mpg combined. I am a little frustrated coz my coworker has the LE and averaging 34mpg. Doesn't really make sense to me. By the way, I do have cargo basket but I am sure if that really affect my MPG.

Steve (not verified)    May 4, 2021 - 8:57AM

I have a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid and, after having gone through a winter running in the low 30's/high 20's MPG, I finally figured this out. The car is basically a tool and you have to learn to use the tool. Since having learned, I get in the low 50s regularly. Learn the skills you need to use the tool -- it's a very fine tool.

Bought 21 RAV4 Limited hybrid in January. First 500 miles got 33 mpg. About 800 got 37, then 39 on a 45 mile trip at 60 mph. Went on 950 mile trip on interstate and got 37 at 75 mph. Now has 6000 miles. Went on 327 mile trip driving up to 70 mph and got 44. Back home for city and short highway holding at 44 mpg. First miles were during cool January in Oklahoma. There is data relating hybrids have lower gas mileage at colder temps. I run in cruse if at all possible, and like the adaptive cruse feature. Get best gas mileage at constant speed. Accel slowly and break slowly for generators in wheels to recharge battery. Changed oil/filter several times at low mileages before recommended because there is mire wear on break-in. Love the car.

I’m getting 31.5 with my 2020 Hybrid. Not happy at all. I drive a lot for work and finally decided to go the hybrid route. The dealer says the pending gas tank conversion will help. I don’t see how the gas tank shape and full capacity will reduce the gas mileageI’m hoping for a VW style class action suit.

I bought a brand new 2021 rav4 Hybrid XLE Premium strictly for the great mileage. The digital reading says I average 37 but when I do the math it's actually closer to 30. Very disappointed. Let's get a lawsuit going.

My wife bought a low mileage 2016 Rav4 Limited Hyrbrid a few years ago. Though the dash often displays mid 40s mileage, we have been averaging about 36mpg when calculating refills. Unfortunately, this is only 3mpg better than my old 1960 VW Beetle would get with a slightly spruced up 1600cc engine. It does seem like EV mode is a joke as it turns off almost immediately. The car was expensive and not nearly enough fuel savings to justify its extra cost over a base Rav4 and definitely no more efficient than many non-hybrid vehicles. Heck, I once averaged 44mpg in our 2007 VW GTI on a 1-1/2 hour highway trip and that car is immensely more enjoyable to drive.

2020 XLE. Mileage ranges from 38.5 to 44.5 according to the computer. Routinely gets between 40 and 42 with mixed driving

Aaron (not verified)    October 10, 2021 - 1:48PM

When I first got my 2019 RAV4 hybrid limited I was getting around 42 average. Saw some tanks get me 45+. After getting new tires it fell around around 4 mpg according to the computer. I’m getting around 39 now. Still happy but nowhere near what I was before the tires that were supposedly “eco” tires.

I purchased a 2021 Rav4 XSE Hybrid in July and am averaging 46mpg in both city and freeway driving, I love my Rav4 XSE Hybrid it has been the most practical vehicle I have ever owned.

Just did a check on a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid AWD otherwise basic Australian version (April delivery and seems to have a lot more safety features than basic US offerings).

Our trip from inner Sydney to Lawson in the Blue Mts elevation 774 m as well as 30 km side trip up and down the mountain there. Total travel was (84 km + 15km) X 2 = about 200 km at the speed limit pretty much all the way. The motorway on the flat (110, 100, 90, 80 kph) was exactly half of the trip. Despite the climb according to the gauging it still managed 4.9 L/100 km = 48 US mpg or 58 UK mpg....well beyond the USEPA claimed standard of 40/38 US mpg, but in line with Toyota's own claims. And it probably could have done better if a. the battery could retain more energy from travelling down hill and b. I didnt travel at 110 or 100 kph (though the deficit wasnt that great).

By contrast when I was doing running around locally at low speed the economy during the past few months the average wa 7 L/ 100km. This is almost the reverse of normal claims of worse performance in the country. It would be interesting to hear from Prime drivers about their economy once the battery runs out on a long drive.

I recognise this is based on the inbuilt metering so I flag that. Also in case anyone thinks I am a shill for the local Toyota people I add that here we have to put up dead heads who think there is no market/business case for the RAV4 Prime despite all indications otherwise, like the popularity of the RAV4 (currently 12 months wait) and the lack of plug in places for pure EVs making a decent plug in hybrid the logical option for the next 10-20 year especially if people want to tow things (reason we bought the RAV4 hybrid - its the only one other than the new Kluger which is a hybrid with significant towing capacity......a real downside of the current generation of pure EVS.
