Gas Tank Issue for Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: Here is Your Fix (with Video)

Learn about the fix for some RAV4 Hybrid gas tanks. A Toyota technician explains it all in our included video.

Some Toyota RAV4 Hybrid owners may have received Customer Support Program notification letters from Toyota in the past couple months.

This specific campaign is for certain 2019-2020 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles and applies to gas tanks and how much you can fill them up.

One of the key benefits of buying a new 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (or a 2019 or 2020 model) is the very good gas mileage it offers. Posted window sticker fuel estimates for RAV4 Hybrid are 41 in the city / 38 on the highway / 40 combined.

Toyota RAV4 is the best selling small SUV in the country. A big reason for this is sales for RAV4 Hybrid and its mpg ratings. Clearly we need a fix for this gas tank issue.

I will take “What is the Issue?” for $8000 please

An issue with gas tanks on a small number of Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles may interfere with the amount of fuel you can put into your tank while at the pump.

Some owners have reported they can only fill up with a smaller number of gallons (I have heard a range of 7 to 11 gallons) once their RAV4 multi-information display reads they are in need of refueling.

Fortunately, this is not a safety issue. However, this is more of a convenience / annoyance issue for those owners involved. This affects the total driving range you can travel before hitting the gas station. Plus, owners must find those same gas stations more frequently.

Again, this is a big annoyance. I can see how it would be frustrating.

Time for the good news.

This issue does not apply to all RAV4 Hybrids – just a small amount. And now, Toyota has announced a solution to the problem and has begun contacting owners whose vehicles apply.

Toyota Letter on RAV4 Hybrid Issue

2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid gas tank issue

Here is an excerpt from the Toyota letter to RAV4 owners:

“Toyota has received customer reports of certain 2019-2020 model year RAV4 HV vehicle fuel gauges displaying less than full and/or total fuel dispensed is less than expected, when the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off when refueling.

Some customer reports have also noted the “Distance to Empty” shown on the multi-information display is less than expected.

Based on our investigation, Toyota believes these conditions to be primarily related to a variation of fuel tank shape and the potential for the fuel sender gauge to become inclined.

These conditions can cause the fuel level to be read incorrectly and may cause the low fuel light to illuminate with more fuel in the tank than usual.”

Next steps for Toyota RAV4 owners

If your RAV4 does not have any of these symptoms, then you do not need to take further action. More than likely your car is not affected.

For those who are experiencing these warning signs, as I explained before, it is not a safety issue. No need to panic. But you do have a “next step.”

You can contact your local Toyota dealer and ask them to run your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Their database will determine if your vehicle is involved in this campaign or not.

After that, if your vehicle applies, schedule a convenient time for your service appointment with your dealership.

More good news for you. No other Toyota model is involved in the gas tank issue. A couple people have emailed me asking if 2021 Venza might be involved as well. No, Venza is not involved.

On a side note, I absolutely love my new 2021 Toyota Venza Limited. I purchased it late December after a week-long evaluation thanks to Toyota. It is already the best car I have ever owned. I encourage you to test drive one if you think it fits your driving needs and style. You may find your next car this way.

Is the destination to empty on a 2020 rav 4 hybrid always the same, the dealer said its based on driving conditions and drivinghabits

Jeff, thanks for the info., on another issue with the 2020 rav4 hybrid gas tank issue. At fillup, I'm not able to put more than 11gals. . The needle is beyond the full mark. If the tank holds 14.5 gals. why can't I put more fuel in? Thanks

I have the same problem with my 2020 RAV4 hybrid. I could only put 9 gallons in. They supposedly replaced the tank and now I can add 10 gallons. Not much of a fix. It sounds like there may be another fix.

There’s a class action going on due to Toyota’s fix not being a good enough fix at all. The firm that contacted me is here if anyone is interested. I’m submitted a declaration attesting that I get far less than 14.5 gallons on gas in the tank after the fix. Alexandra K. Green

There was a class action already started on this issue. It was dismissed with prejudice months ago meaning it can't be refiled before the court. I suspect the reason was because there are two US standards bodies that define how the capacity of a gas tank can be legally described and both agree that the advertised tank capacity includes both reserve and splash area.

A usable 14.5 US gallon area is not valid. Toyota said in the letter announcing this CSP replacement availability that the usable area was more like 9.8 gallons. Don't overfill beyond the auto pump shut off.

I had the fix and the only effect for my car was the auto pump shutoff displays on the fuel gauge as slightly above the F mark. Emotionally satisfying, not really getting any more gas in. Probably 20 fills since the fix. All good.

Just had my vehicle serviced today for this tank issue and fuel pump recall. Was getting like 400miles a tank before when the light would come on. (Only fitting 9gallons). Will have to wait and see if it stays fixed but after filling up after leaving the dealership my ranger said 530 which I can live with because it’s close to the 580 advertised. Will update on next tank fill up

2020 rav4 hybrid , can only pump 38 liters (10 gallons) till shutoff. If anyone knows, can you tell me if a rebuilt will be covered under the "Customer Support Program" for this problem?

Sheri (not verified)    January 5, 2022 - 5:14PM

My 2020 RAV4 was fixed early last year. Symptoms are back again. Fuel gauge will not go to full, and mileage dropped from 40mpg to 30mpg.

I have the same issue in my 21 limited hybrid highlander. I run it past the DTE is 0 and the fuel pump only puts about 13.5 gallons in.....

I have same problem with my 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. When the fuel light now can only fill up 9 to 10 gallons. Try to get this fixed and dealer say this is normal and ok. It's totally not ok because gauge is not correct at all.
And service team told me if you want to diagnosis and if it's an real issue then covered by totyota warranty or you have to pay $230 for inspection fee. Dealer already mentioned early from their point of view this is ok, and if I run diagnosis and I will have to pay, what a good service it is.

Well, Toyota canada was nice to have fixed my gas tank issue ,no questions asked. First fill up was only 39 liters, but now it says 762 dte instead of 580 like before (km). Hopefully this will work

My 2021 RAV4 Hybrid was one of the affected vehicles - could not fill tank. After taking it into the dealer, the “fix” did not fix anything. The needle may read full, but the amount of gas I could put in was still a few gallons short of the 14.5 gallon specified. The only thing the fix did was recalibrate where full was, which wasn’t really full.
