What Should Cadillac Do To Make a Comeback

With some missteps Cadillac is still in a comeback trajectory if they keep away from being a “discount luxury brand.”

There was a time decades ago that Cadillac, and not Rolls Royce, was the pinnacle of luxury in the auto industry. When the Silver Cloud debuted in the mid-1950s it didn’t have full power, tilt, cruise, air conditioning, even a V8 or automatic transmission! A Cadillac Eldorado Seville, Fleetwood 60 or Special did, and that was back in the late 50’s, and why our cars today have all these features. Hollywood stars didn't drive Rolls as much as they did Caddy’s and Lincolns. So what happened, what went wrong? Cadillac cheapened their brand starting in the early 1970’s. And it got worse from there.

Remember, this was once a brand that competed toe to toe with Rolls Royce for decades until the late 1960s early 1970s until they cheapened their brand with “badged engineering,” littering rental car agencies with fleet sales, front wheel drive engineering that they still can’t seem to resist, and poor build quality.

So what do they need to do to turn the brand around? This means refraining from rental counter fleet sales and doing other things to retain brand value. Actually, Cadillac should do what Lincoln has cleverly decided to do to avoid that stigma, and that’s by keeping an old model in production and assigning that car only to fleet sales to have Hertz and Avis use that car only.

They can see those glory days again. If Land Rover can move the Range Rover upmarket Cadillac can easily do the same with any one of their products. But it has to be exclusive, hand built, well made, bespoke ordered, and limited production. It has to be at the minimum a V8 or larger, insane horsepower and torque especially if all electric. And it has to be rear wheel drive based, then all wheel drive as an option, and nothing about front wheel drive exclusively. They start with one car and make it a halo or flagship, coveted that a lot will want but few can have, even less can afford. It can be a saloon too if they want. But it has to be for a global market to sell elsewhere, and if it doesn’t do well here don't do what Lincoln did to their flagship to cancel it before giving it a chance.

They do this, Cadillac will not only enhance the Cadillac brand, but it would put luster onto the GM chicklet badge as well.

Now-Former Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen's abrupt departure was unfortunate, but as they say in the car business timing is everything. Although his strategy was to stick with sedans that I don’t think the luxury brands should should compete with anymore, especially against the Germans, a wave of electrics and CUVs that he needed will all roll in shortly.

But a change in strategy and hands was needed, and part of that was dealing with the harsh reality that few competitors can actually compete with Mercedes-Benz and BMW sedans, and it was best to move on to CUVs and SUVs where Americans do best to remain competitive.

Merry Xmas wondering what happened to you. LOL doubling down? Okaaaaay you gonna loooove my latest report on PHEVs: they want to ban them in the UK. They’re incompatible with superchargers that’s one of the reasons they’re getting rid of them. PHEV=DOA. PERIOD. ZERO. NOT LOW. ;)

I find all this sedan news exciting. If you look up above just about all my predictions for the Lincoln Continental came true except for the drive train and motor. Now I’ll be shocked if they cut the roof off before they cancel the car. I don’t think they’ll do that because there was enough trouble coaching the suicide doors. I didnt think would happen, but it might: the Lincoln Continental might be the last luxury full size gasoline car, the last full sized gas car period, with 300/Charger, left on the market as they killed all full sized Cadillac. It may outlast FCA before the new FCA regen. For Cadillac they’ve cancelled I guess all but one sedan, so we’ll have to wait in 2-3 for the mega electric saloon, their gigantic full size all electric flagship. So we’ll see.

Everyone, please stop praying for a Cadillac comeback. The brand is so stigmatized it cannot possibly come back. Cadillac coming back is like trying to say the Edsel was a success or that rap is real music. Come on folks, go buy German and get your money's worth.

I have a 99 deVille and, yeah, I've had motor work done. What I like about it is adequate room for everyone (and I'm 6'4) and a quiet, comfortable ride that allows conversation and sounds at low levels. For me, that's what a Caddy or Lincoln should be, a luxury car for passengers. Yes, it should have a competent chassis. And yes I also like a Driver's car, but I'm not going to compromise either.
So, I dont care which wheels drive my deVille, or how many cylinders it has. What matters is room and refinement. That goes for Lincoln, too. And Chrysler.
FWIW, with Ford planning to drop all of its coupes and sedans except the Mustang, i suspect future Lincolns, if there are any, may be rwd, on a platform shared with a Mustang.
What does Cadillac need to do? Build a luxury car.
I wish GM had left real Driver's cars to Pontiac.
Which might've still been with us.
And in my garage, too.

Nicely written, I like this. Don’t forget that history shows that Cadillac was the king of the V8, V16, auto tranny (after Olds), factory air, full power, tilt and cruise control, twilight sentinel, and RWD. Yes I know you don’t care so as long as your comfortable, but that’s what Cadillac was always about. It’s nice to see that some people working for the brand researched their brand history. CT6 is the result, and one of the reasons they saved CT6 from cancellation after all. That was about them sticking to what they know!

It would be nice to see the brand bring back iconic names from the past; DeVille, Eldorado, Seville. Why is Cadillac so ashamed of their heritage?

Bill, I suspect Cadillac is envious of BMW and Audi heritage. They seem to be trying to compete with their performance image. I dont know the sales figures for any of these, bit I have the impressions that (1 )they aren't selling as well as they'd hoped and (2) they are losing luxury sales to Lincoln, which seems focused more on competence and less on performance. I'm not confident of that analysis, but it does seem that way to me.
