Is It Worth to Buy a Toyota Tundra With Around 200k Miles?

A lot of people contemplate whether to buy a new truck or a used truck. As a Toyota Tundra enthusiast, I always find myself on the fence debating if I would buy a used Tundra over a new one- let alone one close to hitting the 200k mark. Before you roll out the dough, there are some very obvious factors to take into consideration.

Here are some direct replies I received from online Tundra groups, All Out Tundras and TundraCrew, after asking what one may look at before buying a used Tundra pushing $200k miles.

David K. started up the conversation and brought up some great things to ask before buying a used Tundra. He stated that, “Price is an important piece of the puzzle. Along with sub model, engine, year, ect… And is it one owner, well maintained, or a bunch of owners and abused? Lots of unanswered questions here… I paid 23k for my 2011 TRD with 140k. One owner, perfect condition.”

Jeremy Howard had a bit of a different perspective. "Personally, I prefer to have a low-mileage used vehicle unless I can pay the vehicle off and have no payments. Odds are the longer you use something the more likely it is to break regardless of its reputation, every machine is different."

So, is a used Tundra really worth it?

I continued in several ongoing discussions with other used Tundra owners who explained their appreciation for buying a used Tundra.

"I bought a 2011 cm Tundra, so the 5.7 4x4 with 275k miles. For $5,500. Damn good deal, nothing wrong with it at all. Just a dent from someone that back up into him. One owner. Drives great."

"Depending on price and condition, heck yeah. my friend bought one with 250k no troubles. I just bought one that was near perfect condition with 160k... Best truck I've ever driven"

"I just bought a 2007 with 100,000 miles. I went to a couple of Toyota Dealerships and talked with the folks who worked there (including Mechanics). They said these trucks will last 700.000 miles if you maintain them properly. I hope that's true!"

"Yes. I bought my 1st gen with 140,000 on it. It breezed all the way to 320,000 before I traded it in for my 14' 1794 cm."

"My '01 had 243,000 miles on it, and I replaced it with a 2012 with 171,000. My '12 literally looks new inside. It was a one owner and a local vehicle. I was able to verify all the service records with the dealership it was serviced at so was happy getting a 2012 DC for $14,500."

"If it was well maintained yes, especially the 4.7 million mile motors. "

"Biggest thing is where do you live and where did it come from? A 200k truck here is in a junkyard, a 200k Arizona truck can be driven for the next 100 years still."

Toby Harvey's opinion happened to stand out the most to me. He bought his used Tundra with "180k a few months ago. Super clean. All of my Toyotas have near or over 200k so I had no issue buying another, plus it was the cheapest 5.7 around me and seemed like a good deal... I could've gotten a new truck, but I didn't want to be in debt. I paid cash for this and am more than happy, and it has more creature comforts than most of my other trucks and more power so no reason to pay 3 times [as much] for the same (new) truck in my opinion."

I can write a long list of why I believe that a used Tundra with around 200k miles would be a fantastic investment; however, I have never owned a used Tundra so my argument is hardly credible. I do believe it would be a great purchase simply because they are overall an amazing pickup-truck (see https://www.torquenews.com/4140/top-5-reasons-buy-toyota-tundra), but the most compelling assertions come from real owners. Thank you All Out Tundras and TundraCrew for your input. Special thanks to Toby Harvey for letting me use your image.

What do you guys think? Would you purchase a used Tundra with a hefty amount of miles?

Just purchased a 2009 Tundra SR5 4.7 V8 2WD for 11,500 cash (12,500 after tax and doc fee). Miles were 145,000. Was originally a rental then one owner after that. The previous owner got it at 35,000 miles and service records from the Carfax showed that the oil and filter were changed regularly every 5,000 miles or so. Cosmetically the vehicle is also in very nice condition. Probably needs to have the timing belt replaced soon, but other than that I thought I could have done worse. I specifically targeted the 2009 based on the low number of complaints for that year from Carcomplaints.com. Have y'all used that site before? Pretty useful.

I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra 4x4 Flexfuel with the 5.7 V8, with 330K miles and running strong! I'm the third owner and according to CARFAX this truck has never had any major issues. I'm contemplating the idea of selling it but don't know how much a fair price would be for it. Again CARFAX stated that retail $16K trade $9K what do you guys think.

I have two Dbl can Tundras. My 2004 has 216,000. The 2006 was a single owner well maintained truck with 136,000 when I bought it for $12,000. It is up to 146,650 now. Both have been great trucks and running strong. I am a believer!

I just bought a 2007 Tundra. Before making my final decision, I shopped for months but couldn't find one in my price range with comfortable mileage. Most were above 230k miles. I searched online, asked mechanics and dealers for more details about engine durability. I was told that the truck goes a long way if you take good are of the engine. In fact, they call it a "million miles" truck. I have had mine for about two weeks now. Drives just fine.

Just bought an 07 5.7 SR5 4x4 with 200k for 8k. One owner and extremely well maintained. Mostly freeway mileage. Not at all worried about the mileage because it was so well maintained.

Interesting! I bought the same kinda truck for $14k. After the first two weeks, the problem lights came on. Took it back to dealer and the exhaust system was replaced. When 30-days warranty expired, I got the surprises. Fuel and water pumps failed. The same dealer charged me $1400 to repair each. So, if you buy a truck with high mileage, check out the critical parts. Use an independent mechanic before you seal the deal else, you will be shocked like me. Fixed the water pump. Still gambling with the fuel pump- the tank must be kept full. Gas gauge gives false readings. Nice truck but dishonest dealers.

I got 604,000 miles on my 92 4runner so naturally went back to a Toyota. Got a 2007 Tundra with 183000 miles on it and drives and runs like new at 225000.

Brought a lifted ,full loud exhaust with heavy rims/wheels 08 CM 7 yrs ago with 80k. It was the cheapest. anyway now at 160k miles. So far some big ticket items. Transmission 5k, Fuel Pump 1k and a airbag that was 1k. I do tow a 7k camper with it and i think it might have been beat a bit by the previous owner .

I just bought a 2014 Tundra 5.7 L i Force SR5. I had to go to Maine to get it. I live in upstate NY.
The truck has 167,000. I paid 19K. I drove the truck 5 hour back to NY. Great drive, not bad gas mileage. Drives like a dream. I added a 1,200.00 dollar ,4 year unlimited miles warranty. Just in case. The truck is a beast.

Bought a used 2008 Tundra with 132k miles. It now has 162k. It looked like it had been well maintained when I bought it, no rust, ran solid. I paid about 11k for it 5 years ago. I (knock on wood) haven't had to do anything major to it but some of the common problems showed up. Had to put in a new starter (pain in the arse), a new alternator, rear wheel bearing,springs/shocks, belts. Next up is front differential, probably new plugs/coils and a good tune up. Have a o2 sensor light right now. It's either the sensors or a clogged cat. These things I think just happen after the years go by. I don't run it hard. It also has the timing chain knock issue but it goes away after it warms up enough. I've seen the replacement job for that and I think I am just going to live with it.

I figure I spend about $800-1000 a year on the truck just fixing things like mentioned above. I have a good mechanic but things just add up. Still cheaper than a new truck since I paid cash for it. There's pro's/con's going with a used higher mileage vehicle...any of them. Unless you find one with all the "known" repairs just completed or something, expect to have to do some work here and there.

I have a 2001 Toyota Tundra with 317,000 miles on it. I bought it new. The price of new trucks just makes me shiver. I am going to drive this one into the ground. Do the maintenance work on them and they will go and go and go. I live in Michigan so the bed and rocker panel's are rusting quite a bit. It's been awesome for pulling and the 4x4 in winter is amazing. I recommend Tundra to anyone.

I bought a 01 Tundra 2wd in Cali brand new & now it has 365,000 miles & is still running strong. Haven't had a payment in 15 years. I did all my own maintenance & decided to see how far the timing belt would go, since they recommend changing it every 90,000. I finally changed my belt at 330,000 & it looked real good like it could have done a hundred K more. My water pump was perfect but I changed it out just in case. The paint & clear coat has started to peel & so I think it is time to go for a 2012 or newer replacement (4 wheel drive & crew-cab this time). Love the Tundra. I've replaced many maintenance parts myself & so I feel so comfortable maintaining one that I would never go with another brand.

Well, kind of. Someone else said they went 400,000 on the 1st timing belt & mine could have done that but, I had no way of knowing that until I had the front end ripped open to see the belt. I didn't want the belt to brake while going 60 mph & ruin my engine.

I am looking at 2005 Tundra crew cab SR5, 4 wheel drive, leather interior in good shape no tears in the seat, no rust on the frame, 297000 miles, 3 owners over the years, carfax shows no major repairs and asking $5,600 is this a good deal or too many miles.

I just bought a brand new TRD PRO 4Runner in December. It had 7 miles on it. I have hit one of those rather hard chapters that we all experience in life at some point. My father passed away back in June and my mother has decided to sell the lake home, my childhood home that has has 41 years of memories and stuff that needs to be gone through and hauled off. So I’m looking for that 4WD truck that looks great and runs like a scalded dog. I got a kid not too far away from me that has a 2014 Tundra CrewMax with 130,000 miles. He initially asked $21,000 and has since backed down to $19,000. I have a few photos. None of which are of the motor. But I’m thinking of setting a time to go down and drive it. Just wanted to get your thoughts on this price, mileage, etc…? Thank you in advance
