Scarce Maverick Pickup Selling For 10 Percent Over MSRP

There’s an old saying that things “are as scarce as hens’ teeth.” So, how does this apply to cars? It’s easy: if you were one of the lucky bunch who managed to get reservations early enough for a Ford Maverick, it doesn’t apply because your desire for the popular compact pickup has been satisfied.

But suppose you are among the many who may not have had a reservation early enough or didn’t get one in at all, and you have been looking for the hit compact pickup at various dealerships. In that case, the saying applies because Mavericks are as scarce as hens’ teeth.

Here’s the way the Ford Authority describes it:

“When it arrived for the 2022 model year, the Ford Maverick became an instant hit as budget-conscious shoppers – or just those craving a compact pickup – lined up in throes to purchase one.”

As the Ford Authority (FA) put it there was a real problem: “production has struggled to keep up with demand.”

Many Buyers Have Been Left Behind

This has left those buyers who have wanted a Maverick either out in the cold or, if they found the compact pickup on a dealer’s lot, it meant they paid well over sticker for the pickups for the “privilege of bringing one home.”

“The Ford Maverick was among a handful of new vehicles listed for the highest dollar amount/percentage over its MSRP through the first eight months of 2023, as well as among the top 10 in that regard as recently as last November.”

Since November, the situation hasn’t changed, either, says FA, quoting Consumer Reports.

The Situation Remains Unchanged

The consumer group based its information on data from TrueCar, an independent vehicle information provider. Consumer Reports put together a listing of the “worst deals on new vehicles at the moment.” The story is this, says the consumer group, “Every model on this new list is priced, on average, at eight percent or more than its average MSRP, which isn’t ideal given the fact that once we factor in depreciation, Maverick buyers” are facing lousy deals. CR notes that Maverick buyers face “future losses than others in coming years.”

CR found that Maverick is among the worst offenders on this list with an average selling price of 10 percent more than MSRP.” This figure ties it to “second place with four other models.”

“According to TrueCar data, the average MSRP of a 2024 Ford Maverick is $34,855, but the average” that buyers spend over the baseline is $3,551 – giving it an average sales price of $38,406.

With this as the situation, FA notes that “perhaps unsurprisingly, the 2024 Ford Maverick has also been subject to multiple price increases over the past several months” as well.

New Mach-E Sales Slow;  On Used Market It Is A Different Story

Going back to last summer, FA reported that last July, “the compact pickup received increases ranging from $270 to $1,460 depending on trim,” and last month, the XL added another $415 to its base MSRP.”
