Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are furious they can't get their AC fixed

Dozens of 2014 Chevrolet Silverado owners have contacted us over their frustration about their trucks' air conditioning problems. Owners say that they are unable to get their trucks fixed properly.

Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are apparently not getting much help in solving problems with the air conditioning on their trucks. I first wrote about this problem with 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras in October of 2016.

Since then I have received dozens of comments from other angry owners, convinced that General Motors is not doing anything to help them.

Scott P. writes, “My 2014 Sierra 1500 as a leak in the AC condenser. Only have 50k miles. Can't get a replacement compressor anywhere. Whatever inventory was available has been bought out and marked up heavily, as much as $800 for the condenser. What is GMC doing to resolve this issue? Why aren't they on the hook for the epidemic failure?”

Angry with General Motors’ failure to act

Phillip A. is furious that GM has not issued a mass recall for this widespread issue. “Add my Chevy Silverado to the long list of AC issues. Started a case document with GM. Was told it's not a big problem or a recall issue. Been to the dealer three times now. This past appointment ended with an empty box for my parts. Compressor was suppose to be inside the box and nothing, what a waste of another day. Now it's going to be reordered and was told the compressors are back ordered. For a isolated issue, parts should not be back ordered. I for one will not be buying a new truck from GM.”

Bill is also angry, he says, “My 2014 Silverado will more than likely be my last GM product ever. Mine needs a condenser, 3 year old truck with 60k miles on it and it's on intergalactic backorder. Dealer told me about a TSB regarding a updated condenser so I tried calling the Customer Assistance Center to see if they could provide some "cost assistance". I was told that since I bought it used they couldn't help me. Really? So this is how GM supports its products? Hope they enjoyed the bailout money Obama gave them, I'll be trading this $%#@ at the Ford dealer across the street.”

Steven B. is irate. “Hot air blowing with AC on. I googled "AC problems 2014 silverado" and got lots of hits. I replaced the compressor line, but it still wouldn't hold freon. I contacted GM (1-800-222-1020) and told them my warranty was out (48000 miles), but have owned the vehicle less than 3 years. They set me up with a local dealer to have the AC checked out. Yep, it was the compressor and it would cost $1098.00 to repair. I explained to the GM rep that this is my 4th new GM truck, and I've never had AC issues with any of them. They said they'd see what they could do. Well, after sending me to the dealership to confirm the AC problem, GM refused to help on the cost. I intend to write letters to the editors of most of the auto magazines about this. I encourage everyone to do the same.”

There are forums with dozens of pages of similar complaints about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. The owners understand that problems can develop, what they can’t understand is why GM is refusing to help them resolve the issues.

Michael D. is terribly disappointed in GM. “AC CONDENSER gone in my 2014 Sierra. $1200 to fix. HOWEVER!! I found out today it would be up to 2 months to get the part because, 18000 units are on back order! YES! 18000 units! Why is there not a recall on this issue? Ridiculous.”

Contacting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Brian H. says that he contacted NHTSA and they recommend banding together. “25,500 miles and yes my AC has gone out. Chevy support was useless and no voluntary recall. I was instructed by the National Highway Traffic/Safety admin to do the following: Contact: State attorney general Advise on recourse Possibly take part in a class action lawsuit Contact the Federal Trade Commission - 877.382.4357 lodge a complaint. If enough of us file a complaint they will act (just don't know how many that will take).”

Just this afternoon, I received this complaint, from an owner named James. “I have been waiting for over 60 days for a A/C condenser for a 2014 silverado, Chevy customer care offered the standard we cant help you the part is on back order excuse and then asked what do you want us to do about it? Chevy and their team of lawyers have already calculated their loss and dont care about this problem. Contact DOT and file a compliant and follow up with your state attorney office. Don't let this slide, Chevy and GMC must learn for their lack of service.”

It certainly appears that this issue will cost GM truck sales in the future. It is unfortunate that owners are currently suffering, especially as the hot weather is hitting across the country.

I finally got a new condenser. I waited 9 weeks. I wrote a letter to General motors at 8 weeks and let them know that I would never but another Chevy truck, magically a condenser showed up a week later. This is still going to be my last Chevy truck. My condenser went out at 71,000 miles.

Went to take my 2014 Chevrolet Silverado back for service because my AC stopped working. Also was told my AC condenser has a crack at the weld and it would cost me $1098 for repairs. I told them to go to hell I do it my self.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 in shop now for third condenser. Same issue with top line tube on upper right side looking through grill. pin hole. If you look real close you will see oil around line where the Freon oil residue.
We all need to go to BBB and complain as well as all of the automotive rating services.

Add me to the list of angry owners.

My 2014 Silverado truck just hit 75,000 mi. I bought new in spring of 15.
AC just went out this week in Wisconsin where it's been 90+ degrees this week. I've owned 2 Silverados in an 04, and 11. Both went 190,000 and 150,000 mi as work trucks.
I'm so mad, my quote to fix my cracked condenser is 915.00.

If gm fails to fix this issue I will not buy a 4 th Silverado ever.

Upper right (drivers side) of condenser has microscope Crack....

I, too, have a 2014 Sierra, purchased brand new. A/C went out at about 125,000km. I was in July told by the dealer the same as most others, the condenser problem, and none were available until October. Great time to look forward in Albert to have A.C. I asked them specifically to get me an aftermarket, and they told me none were available. I checked with a local auto parts store who had one in for me in two weeks. The dealer was happy to charge me + $ 700.00 to install it, but didn't explain the story of "no aftermarket ones available". I went to GM, as did others, and was flatly turned down on warranty. (truck had extended power train warrant to 100,000km). The cared zero that me & my family had been loyal GM customers since the early 70's, purchasing over 20 of their products. This is a very black eye on GM, and I have no sympathy for the dealers, as they all seem to lack the courage to stand up to GM. Looking forward to my new F-150 when next time comes.

Has anyone heard any updates as far as condensers coming off of backorder/ GM stepping up to shoulder some of the financial burden? WE have a 2015 Tahoe LT with 48,000 miles and have been without A/C since June.

Very disappointed to read condenser failures . Add mine to the list. Orielly has one for me. I am in the Ac business so it will be easy for me to replace . Oh well. Shouldn’t be happening

Today my 2014 GMC SLT 4x4 with 83,400 miles, !!!!!!!7 RECALLS!!!!!, AIR COMPRESSOR literally ruptured/blew up within and put a hole completely through the compressor!! I couldn't believe this. Mechanic said I was like the 3rd person he has seen that has happen. $1200 to fix?? Hell no! Screw GMC never again! $49,000 down the drain! I'm going with FORD OR TOYOTA screw this! pathetic! But then I got a call that GM is willing to pay the majority of it???? what's really going on?

I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 with same issue. I live in the South and it gets 100 degrees in July. Tell me that no a/c is not a safety issue.

Tracy Lane (not verified)    December 18, 2017 - 9:06PM

After already replacing a gasket due to AC not cooling, a month later being told my 2014 Silverado needs a new condenser. I guess add me to list. It took my husband 12 years to get me in a bow tie and this is what I get? Even my 05 Ford Expedition , which was epic for breaking spark plugs in the head during pkug changes , didnt have trouble until 5 years old. Wow

Replaced my condenser and radiator in September, luckily I did not have to be put on a waiting list. Unfortunately, the replacement radiator was faulty when they installed it, so the dealer replaced it the next week. Still very upset that I spent 2k on fixing a truck that I had only owned for 4 months. I have owned 4 other cars/trucks in my life and have never had to touch a radiator or condenser. Emailed Chevy Customer Service numerous times and have had absolutely no luck in getting a reply back. It was suggested I do a transmission flush with my new radiator, which I did because the dealership fudged the numbers, so it was no cost. Now my fuel economy is down about 5 mpg, still trying to figure that one out.

Add me to the ranks, just shelled out $1225 to have the condenser replaced ( only after paying $130 twice to detect a leak with dye) 2014 Silverado
Been driving GM cars and trucks all my life, this is unacceptable!

2014 GMC Sierra, 72,000 miles, started blowing out hot air over the weekend, dealership says condenser leak, quoted $910 to replace it. He says they are changing them out left and right.

2014 Silverado Z71 4x4. 42,000 miles. Started blowing hot air this week - no cold.

After having the transmission rebuilt and now the condensing unit with no help from GM this will my last GM product and it all I’ve drove for55 years

I purchased my 2014 Silverado new and had the first A/C discharge line crack at 24,000 miles, 2nd line cracked at 38,000 miles, condensing unit went at 120,000 miles, and now my 3rd discharge line has cracked at 160,000 miles. The ONLY bright side of this is that I have been able to do all of my own repairs. I normally will not allow a GM tech to touch one of my vehicles. Also, I went on line and have been ordering replacement parts from Canada cheaper and quicker than anywhere in the country. It seems that a lot of their dealships have these parts in stock and since their customer use very little a/c, some of them never, they don't realize that their units are inoperative and so I can order parts ASAP.
I have driven Chevrolet Silverados exclusively since the 60's. I think I will get my first (ever) Ford or Toyota this time around. GM has been aware of the metallurgy problem since early in 2014 and did not make a concerted effort to correct the defect. They have put the burden on their dealers and customers to bite the financial and image bullet. We have an old saying, "What goes around, comes around". Trump will not bail your sorry butts out like Obama did. So don't be surprised when customers begin to turn away.

2015 GMC Sierra bought new in 2016 has typical leak in AC condenser, same spot everyone else's leak!! How is this acceptable? The internet is FULL of same complaint! Never will buy GM vehicle again! Looking for a class action law suit! This is rediculous!!

First warm day yesterday and guess what ! 2014 Silverado 50000 miles blowing warm. GM can’t say it’s not a safety issue. My family and I were on the road and I stopped to fuel up, the gas station attendant cleaned my windshield and when he was done I started the truck , put the ac on and the cab filled up with a strong smell. I questioned the attendant as to what he used to clean my windshield and he replied “soapy water “. Then I realized that the AC was blowing warm and the smell was the Freon blowing into the cab through the vents. My wife got very nauseous to the point of vomiting. SOUNDS LIKE SAFETY ISSUE TO ME! Going to make a few calls today. If you have a similar vehicle with this problem PICK UP YOUR PHONE AN LODGE A COMPLAINT!!!

2014 Silverado 50,000 miles. Yesterday 4/24/18 First warm day in New York. AC blowing warm. GM SAYS ITS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. Yesterday on a road trip with my family we stopped to gas up and the attendant kindly cleaned my windshield. When we were done fueling up I started my truck put the AC on high and the cab filled up with a strong odor. I questioned the attendant as to what he used to clean my windshield thinking maybe he used something that caused the odor and he replied “soapy water “ I then noticed that the AC was blowing warn and realized the cab was filled with Freon blowing through the vents! My wife got very nauseous to the point of vomiting. SOUNDS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE TO ME! Not sure what breathing in a cab full of Freon does to your lungs but It can’t be good. I’ll be making a few phone calls today and I suggest you do the same. FTC,GM ETC. I searched this issue today an can’t believe how many complaints were posted an as far as I can tell GM DOESN’T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. A class action suit will get the lawyers rich, not us and it would take years for us to get a measly settlement. If you have the same issue make your voice heard an maybe......wishful thinking GM will step up and address the thousands of loyal customers who will be thinking twice about purchasing another GM VEHICLE IN THE FUTURE P.S. ESTIMATED REPAIR COST BETWEEN $800 to $1500 AT A DEALERSHIP

Gabe Alvarez (not verified)    April 26, 2018 - 9:21AM

This happen to my 2014 Chevy Silverardo. I took it in for oil change with no issue with the A/C drove it back home working no issue. Then on Wednesday warm air from the A/C when we turned it on. Was pissed that this happened and call the dealership who I had the oil change service and asked what they do to my truck. I then had a schedule appt for Saturday to scope the issue and BAM they told me my condenser has a crack at the weld of the unit. Cost $1100 to repair it and I argued that this is a defect issue and should be repaired by GM. this was a lost argument and I told them I wont be coming back again. I did end up buying the part from another dealer that was much cheaper and repaired it my self total out of pocket $332. no way I could wait for either GM to fess up to this issue so I had to take action and fix it my self.

Doug Bell (not verified)    April 29, 2018 - 1:19PM

Spent a some time calling GM customer service
and a few dealerships to lodge a complaint and was told that there were no such issues affecting the 2014 Silverados by GM Customer service and the 3 dealerships I called told me they weren’t seeing many service calls related to this problem. I mentioned to the dealer about the special clamp which is a GM part that goes between the high and low pressure lines to prevent vibration that causes one of the possible leaks
and they had no idea what l was talking about. The other area where a leak can occur is due to a bad weld on the condenser (I was told they haven’t seen that problem either)
I guess they
are just denying an ongoing problem that they don’t want to address. Guess we’re on our own.

I purchased a brand new 2014 GMC Sierra 1500.
My ac was blowing hot air, took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed with the Ac condenser leak. They covered the repair because my vehicle was still under warranty. This was back in May of 2016.
Now it’s 2018. Weather starts getting hot so I turn my ac and it starts blowing hot air again!! I already had a feeling it was the same problem. Took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed with the same problem condenser leak. It will $1500 dollars just to repair a problem that had already happened twice.

Called General Motors filed a complaint. Nothing is being done. Considering filling a consumer class action lawsuit/ endangerment lawsuit as weather gets really hot out here and find to be on alarming concern as vehicles can reach up to 99 degrees even with the windows down. Threatening people with health issues, infants/ small children.

Same issue going to dealer next week. This is my third Silverado, but if GM doesn't want to address the problem. Count me in on their calculated losses I'll switch to another make.

Howard Newmans (not verified)    May 10, 2018 - 8:52AM

My 2014 Silverado had 3 condensing hose failures and 1 condensing coil failures so far. The clutch in the torque converter also began to shudder at 120,000 miles. I replaced it also.

Mike Adams (not verified)    May 12, 2018 - 4:49PM

Well I thought I was safe from this, I was just told by the dealer that my 2014 silverado with 30k miles has AC leaks and it will be 2400$ to repair. Grr.

Does anyone know if there is a real chance of this being recalled?

Tony D (not verified)    June 14, 2018 - 2:20PM

Same issue here. 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 outside of warranty. Suddenly no cold air. Leak in the condenser required it to be replaced at our expense. GMC customer assistance kept saying that we needed to speak to the dealer since it was out of warranty (which we had already done.)
Inferior parts/design/manufacturing and an unwillingness to stand by the customer. The representative clearly wanted to dump us ASAP and would not consider reimbursing the cost of replacement at the dealer. As a result this will likely be our last GM/GMC vehicle ever. I will definitely be letting my friends and family know that they should avoid them too.
